From what I've been told, it was just lazy pandering. I can't bring myself to watch it cuz I just honestly don't like the show, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. And I am 100% someone who likes a well crafted gay relationship in a show, but most shows just...fall flat, you know? Or resort to pandering, which is even worse.

Then you were told wrong. It was subtly built up, mostly because they had to fly way under the censors. So if you werent looking for it, youd probably miss it. Apparently in the comic spinoff they were allowed to be more open about it.
