Toxtricity 01/04/21 3:02:24 PM #426 | haha microscopism is definitely my favorite from that album; though i have much less attachment to The 7th Guest than I do myst so i probably listen to the myst remixes on that more, microscopism is the one where while i'm listening i'm the most into it for sure also I'm not tooo surprised to see the long intro on that Oneohtrix Point Never one drag it down, glad you liked the rest of it though, was really hoping you would! I would recommend listening to the whole Garden of Delete album if you liked the rest of that particular song though, whole thing has a very distinct style and definitely that repetitive intro is out of the ordinary for it. There's some other OPN stuff I'd recommend too but go with Garden of Delete first i'd say. i know you listened to some other stuff before as well as for the Jacob Collier one---jacob is normally not even close to that overtly weird so in context of the rest of the album, that track stands out a lot, though there's actually an even stranger one that's frustratingly even SHORTER (and almost picked that one instead): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCbkL63CKU and i really wish he'd make something that's like full 4-5 minute songs or whatever in the style of these weird ones. because it's so frustrating that some of the most perfect music to me is relegated to these tiny songs relative to all his much more normal longer stuff (and to be clear i like jacob collier in general well enough, but these strange electronic ones interest me much more than anything else he does) --- time |

Toxtricity 12/15/20 2:56:45 PM #59 | aww one of my fav zelda songs tho not too surprised to see it this low in any list lol. tbh i'd like it more with different instrumentation myself, also it sounds a bit better in game i feel, the bubbly/clicky sound is way less pervasive when it's not the only thing your ears are hearing (and it gets cooler and slightly trippier with pitch bends and things than this version that cuts off before it's even all the way done) anyway it plays toward endgame, one of the last weird dungeon areas that's like really deliberately monotonous for disorientation, music fits pretty well but a fake ganon battle theme replaces it pretty much every room so you won't be hearing this track too long all at once if you're progressing at a normal pace. --- time |

Topic | Which videogame had your favorite soundtrack? |
Toxtricity 11/15/20 9:54:58 PM #31 | 1. PSO2 2. Sonic Shuffle 3-???. i dunno i totally changed my order of favorite things recently, i decided so i have to figure it out again. sonic shuffle held the title from ~2015-2020, but after finally listening to all ~37hrs of pso2 music, can confidently say it's my favorite ost. Both soundtracks for basically the same reason--diverse but still an overarching distinct sound i seek--stylistically cohesive focused osts that happen to contain pretty much every unrelated type of music I enjoy in them at the same time (particularly combinations of traits that aren't common to find fused together: edm mixed with avant-prog especially is not something you see almost ever. and both explore a wide range from the very artificial to the very natural, often in combination, which is also important to me. simultaneous hypnotic minimal repetition and overstimulating dense complexity is another combo that can be difficult to find but it's present in spades in both soundtracks (I guess that is kinda implied by "both edm and prog")). PSO tbh mostly only takes the claim for favorite because it has so much music but i probably like sonic shuffle more consistently after that some big hits but not confidently ordered: Opoona Coded Soul Caravan Stories Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil Klonoa: Door to Phantomile Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky Shining Wisdom Wachenroder Ar Tonelico II Border Down Senko no Ronde DUO Einhander Zero Divide 2 Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Super Paper Mario Panzer Dragoon Orta but the list goes on forever. I listen to a stupidly huge amount of vgm and this is just the tip of the iceberg of vgm that makes me happy! : ) --- time |

Toxtricity 11/15/20 1:52:19 PM #5 | i could not finish playing banjo kazooie because i thought the music was just too cheesy and fake and stupid and eventually couldn't stand playing it anymore. i love the game in every other way but wish like literally anyone else had done the soundtrack, just totally ruined it for me. the composition isn't even horrible, cartoony stuff is fine, it's just the fakeness and monotony of it all. maybe i'd like it if the instrumentation was more like super paper mario (one of my favorite soundtracks ever) or something there's other game music / full soundtracks i like much less, but none i'm aware of where it's to a type of game i'd normally love that much, so i have a more personal frustration with banjo kazooie than anything else --- time |

Toxtricity 11/15/20 12:16:38 PM #7 | i am very bad at video games honestly i just like playing them because they are fun : ) mostly i just have really poor dexterity so i'm mostly only good at things like "puzzle games" and "adventure games" but even in those i'm not actually good at in terms of speed/skill at solving puzzles or anything, i just have more patience for them than other people seem to so then people are impressed that i beat them without a walkthrough even though i take 8x as long as other people to solve them it feels (this said, i am strangely good at games that are known for being "difficult dexterity challenges" like super monkey ball, or things like weird speedrun tricks or kirby air ride vehicles that have intentionally bad controls or things like that. I think maybe it's just that my fine motor skill is SO poor, unfamiliar with what is supposed to be "natural" in the first place, that things that are "unusual" dexterity experiences aren't actually any harder than "normal" motor skill control? that's always been my theory for why there are these arbitrary feeling exceptions) --- time |

I could go on about it (and maybe will later if i get more time) but it'd all be stuff you'd expect me to say anyways and i kinda summarized it in the writeup. but it's just at near maximum level everything i want music to do at the same time and i am overjoyed that something like it exists. Toxtricity 10/29/20 4:22:26 PM #386 | music theory is mostly useful so you can say "when the maj7 chord modulates up a half step" instead of saying "when the one note and the one note 4 notes above the first note and the one note 3 notes above that one, and the one note 4 notes above that one are all being played at the same time and then all four of those notes get played a second time but are moved up by the note one note above them on the keyboard" to mean the exact same thing. its shortcuts based on observed patterns to make music easier to talk about. but knowing the language of music theory doesn't actually mean any tastes or preferences you have are any better/worse. or even that you understand the music any more/less. it just means you can put a name to common (or uncommon) patterns and traits that show up in music; whether or not those traits are things you like and you can observe those exact same patterns without knowing the names for them, and certainly even if you never think about things beyond vague things like atmosphere/emotion or whatever, you are still impacted by those patterns and have preferences that can be described through theory. you just may happen to describe your interest in a different way. but it doesn't mean you even understand music less, it just means you either don't know the shortcut names for the patterns that interest you, or that your focus is in areas less detail-centric. i'm basically painfully detail-centric in any interest i have; and music luckily has a language that can make it more convenient to talk about tiny details in it. so i know it adequately in-depth. and i usually assume that if someone's reading what i'm saying and they don't know what i'm talking about they can just look up words or concepts if they want to. but when i'm talking about things i like in games? there's all sorts of things i like that could probably be described more conveniently but i don't have an existing language with shortcuts to do so. i'll make wacky flowcharts of game structure or whatever to describe what i enjoy on that front, but certain concepts could be described in single words that don't exist (at least not that i'm aware of). and what i will express in THOSE settings is /more convoluted/ than anything i'm able to more concisely express thorough 'music theory words' i suppose 'being really detail-centric' is actually part of why i'm attracted to this community actually, even if i consider myself out of place here in many ways. excessive stats analysis and discussion of the tiniest trivial details of /everything/ being such a norm in every project it makes me so happy~! --- time |

Toxtricity 10/29/20 3:50:05 PM #382 | Leanansidhe posted... I have no idea what any of this means, so my music ranking may not be the most professional thing in the world. i mean anything i say is just based on personal taste lol; i could use the same types of words, with the same level of positivity to describe music that's to someone else's preference but i absolutely hate. i like to talk in ways that focus on details that sometimes require weird music-theory-nerd centric language to be as precise as i'd like to convey. but that doesn't mean that the things i have to say are like 'fact' and indicative of 'knowing more about music' or anything, they're just my taste. They're still just as preference as any other preference. sorry if it comes off as pretentious or confusing, it's just how i talk, which i know some people don't get or like, but is usually the best way to describe what i personally focus on when listening. also nfun is just quite aggressive about his opinions! In this case i very much agree with how nfun feels about aiming to the future and the evo version. Sometimes i don't agree with nfun! and then the way nfun will talk will make me sad! luckily this is not one of those times. --- time |

Toxtricity 10/29/20 1:35:52 PM #377 | rip Aiming for the Future, legit my 2nd favorite falcom song (at least the original version). some of the peak of both ishibashi's really cool rhythmically playful style and tendency towards the types of chords/progressions i love. that transpose-y first minute is just one of my favorite things. the [3+3+3+3+4]/4 rhythms that really ambiguify barlines and downbeats are exactly what i love. the INSTRUMENTATION is so me. It is like if my favorite obscure "Uru: To Dn'i / Uru: Ages Beyond Myst / Myst Online: Uru Live /etc" song called "islmLibraryMusic_Loop.ogg" (a song most myst fans don't care about) was arranged to be like a much more energetic theme for a futuristic dungeon in a place floating in the sky in a jrpg from 2004 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bOMgUTR4_U the evo arrange is maybe my least favorite evo arrange of any in the entire series i know of. if only because it's destroying a piece of music i love, and making into something i have difficulty being able to stand listening to. i enjoy the base composition a TON though, so i would still probably give it like 9.9/4, if it were a song i was given to rate. i would technically rather listen to other evo arranges less, because i like the source composition less in other things, but which evo arrange pisses me off and makes me the most sad? absolutely aiming to the future. --- time |
