Perfect Dark (XBLA)

This is a fun game. It was just kinda nice to go back to a game that still had enough big areas and mazy corridors but wasn't overwhelming in its hugeness. Pretty much all the weapons felt useful and had different modes to just make that even better.

There were some annoyances with the game where it felt it was very harsh. In one of the missions, you're supposed to blow up a gunship with an RPG. Except you only get one rocket and if you don't put on tracking mode, chances are you will not hit it. Except to put on tracking mode, you have to stand still for a bit and let it lock-on. This is after the gunship has been following you throughout pretty much the entire level together with enemies shooting you. And after this, you still have to take out about five enemies with shotguns who surround you. And if you do miss that rocket, objective failed, game over. Another mission later on asks you to put a communications tracker on a satellite dish. You have to throw this tracker, and you have to lower the satellite dish to do so. If you throw it before the dish is fully down, tough luck, the device will fly through and mission failed.

I also think the game has a rough difficulty curve in the final levels with some really obscure stuff it wants to you to do (blow up a rockface to reveal a ladder, except the ladder is really difficult to see especially if you don't really know to look for it). The overall gameplay is just so fun though, and Joanna is confident and sassy without it becoming too much.

I think what I actually dislike most about all the problems is that they completely overshadow the game itself, which has some faults but in a normal video game world, this game is very good, but a sequel could actually be a best game of all time. But will it ever have a sequel after the fallout of all the issues?

I mean, I'm playing on a standard Xbox One and I'm having a great time. I haven't had too many technical issues I feel, and there are some flaws, but yeah, it's just a good time imo.

I was looking at DA:I during the Steam sales and someone in the comments was mumbling otherwise, complaining about the integration of Steam into EAplay or some shit, so I dunno. I'm not trusting that comment 100% since I'm not sure I understood it correctly in the first place, but I wouldn't assume. I know that my ancient saves from when DA:O came out were still around when I installed the game via Steam in 2019. (Or at the very least, I had all the subclasses unlocked already.)

As for length, I think it's generally billed as like 40 hours? Honestly, I spent enough time in menus and stuff, and carefully managing the battles, that it was probably slower than that for me.

Inquisition uses the Keep anyway, so saves don't really matter.

Serviceable shooter. I assume it's more fun with a friend as opposed to an AI which doesn't always listen well to your (limited) commands, but it didn't take too long at least. It was prettier than I expected it to be for an '08 shooter as well.

So, thoughts on the game so far:

Technical level, relatively happy. I'm playing on a classic Xbox One and I've only had one crash and about two T-poses. There have been some almost crashes, but I'll take those over an actual crash. Game still looks weird but not necessarily bad.

I like the clothes. It's fun to make your character look cool and there's plenty of stuff there to pull that off however you please. I like the gunplay and I like how different the cars feel. I've enjoyed the writing and the different characters quite a bit, although sometimes I wish the game would give you more options to go in-depth with them.

My problems with the game don't bother me that much, but if this game gets a sequel (and who knows with the release drama) these are things that definitely need to get fixed:

  • Loot. Good fucking lord, it's insane. You can't take two steps without something flashing at you to pick it up, especially in quest/combat areas. A lot of stuff you can ignore (junk) but what if always draws you in. I have no idea why there are weapon shops in this game when every combat encounter will give you at least 10 guns that are good enough for wherever you are in the game. I'm not that far in Act 2 and purely by doing story missions in Act 1 and 2, I've already picked up 3 Iconic Pistols that do their job amazingly well. In that sense, I don't know why there are junk items, when every combat encounter will also give you at least 10 guns that are useless beyond selling/decrafting.
  • Combat, although this is a problem imo with every game that wants to give you the option of going in guns blazing or stealthily. The modern Deus Ex games for instance give you this "choice", but it's not really a choice; stealth gives way more exp and the levels are designed way more for sneaking and taking out enemies and dumping them somewhere (or avoiding them altogether) and Jensen isn't exactly a death machine. In Cyberpunk, I feel the game definitely pushes you to a guns blazing approach. A lot of the combat areas are very open, with a lot of enemies looking right at each other. I don't really enjoy the stealth system where it gives you the opportunity to be seen as long as you head into cover; I don't need instant sight, but if there's a guy looking down a corridor and I'm going from one side to the other, he should see me (depending on distance and wideness of the corridor I guess, but you know what I mean). Stealth in this game seems to imply more that you avoid enemies, but most of the quest goals are in a suitcase that the big enemy is using as a stool, so it's kinda irrelevant. There are also a billion cameras everywhere, which leads into my next point of criticism.
  • Even with a tutorial, the hacking mechanic is kinda weird and confusing imo. The basic hacking to get goodies is easy enough to understand (although the buffer mechanic is not totally clear) but the hacking of enemies and machinery in combat I find very confusing. There are times when you can shut off cameras permanently, and there are times when you shut them down for a few seconds/minutes. There's no real indication when it's going to be one way or the other. I don't know if this happened because of the difficulty level or because of my level, but it's been pretty confusing in combat encounters. In that sense, your "mana" does not regenerate in combat unless you get a perk, but I've found it very unclear where exactly it is indicated how much I have. I've also not levelled them that much, but a lot of the hacking spells seem weak to me.
  • Screen calibration. I don't have a wide monitor; I know the game wasn't made for me, but it's kinda silly that I can't adjust the screen corners like in every game in existence since the XBO/PS4 days and now some things get cut off. How is this something that isn't in the game when going into the Gamma Correction gives you a tutorial that lasts you a day?
  • As fun as the world is, there's not quite enough to do. In the Witcher, you can get away with a pub and a card game. In something like Cyberpunk, it should probably lean a bit more to being able to play basketball or something. Nobody would really do it I guess, but it still feels weird that there's so little to live in a world that is this well built.

DA warriors are awful. If you try to make them big hitters they drop as soon as an enemy looks at them funny, and if you try to make them a tank, they.... still go down immediately.

is just a bad build. Tanks are boring af to play in DA, but if you specc them correctly they do not die. In Origins you pump 'em full of Dexterity to make them dodge machines and in Inquisition you should really always have full Guard up and be nigh untouchable. You just can't do anything else other than distract enemies from you.

azuarc posted...
I never felt like I could do very much with warrior or rogue,

This is also wrong though, as Rogue gives you constant ability to open any chest or door and again, spec them right and you kill stuff way quicker than anything else (aside from aforementioned broken af Crushing Prison).

What do people find bad about the AI? I was actually surprised when I got flanked by a thug (some pachinko machine sidequest) when I was fighting some other thug and taking cover in the alleyway nearby. I guess the other guy didn't really come for me, but he didn't have to as the flanker nearly killed me.

Ironically, the most FPS issues I've had happen when I'm just in the world. My character feels like they're constantly stumbling everywhere, but I don't really notice stuff like that in combat.

I'm pretty overwhelmed with stuff to do as I really don't enjoy looking at that map and I'm mostly going from quest to quest and grabbing other quests if they're on the way. As faulty as it is, I do believe that they if a CP 2078 would come out, it could be really great with things that they learn from this game.

I will also agree with the person saying that the Talk options with NPCs is really disappointing. I don't need to have huge, fleshed-out conversations with everyone, but none of those people have any interaction and at that point, why even give me the option to talk to them?

One look at the channel tells me it's your typical YT bullshit of "hey, I'm gonna make an entire channel filled with negativity", and at that point, any and all credibility you have is lost.

Also, I once saw a video explaining the "Too much water". It was poorly written, in the sense that the reviewer found that due to there being many water routes, there were also way too many Water-Pokemon in the game, especially compared to something like Fire-types iirc. The blurb at the end undid the point she made in the review I think was the end statement.

SMB and Tetris go beyond the gaming scope so it makes them easy winners. Something like One Winged Angel is known among gamers (even if you haven't played FF7) but is limited to gamers only. Something like the Poke Center theme would probably come closest to number three, because that track also got used in the anime iirc.

One of the Minecraft tracks could also be up there, something like Sweden or something.
