30. Beat a game with a female lead

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Felt like playing this again. Decided to do a run on hard mode before trying the new characters/modes. The difficulty only really felt like it mattered at the beginning, and at one later boss fight, but it was still a fun replay. Probably going to try Bloodless, next.

17. Beat a first-person shooter

Deathloop

Had a ton of potential, but the story ended up falling kinda flat, and the game got extremely repetitive. I guess the latter is appropriate, given the game's core conceit, but that didn't make the lack of variety any more enjoyable. Still not a bad game, but a huge letdown after Prey.

Space Harrier

Used to be my time-killer of choice in Shenmue. Never came close to beating it, though, seeing as it was one credit only. This time I played the Sega Ages version on Switch, which gave you.... four credits. Still pretty rough, but much more manageable, and with a stage select option to practice.

Record of Lodoss War -Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth-

The most Symphony of the Night looking game I've played since Symphony of the Night. It does enough with some of its own gameplay systems to differentiate itself, though, and it feels very good to control. A bit too short, and a bit too easy not to have a hard mode or any postgame stuff, but overall a very solid metroidvania.

Little Misfortune

Got this in one of KCF's code giveaways (thanks for always doing those!) I enjoyed the developer's previous game (Fran Bow) quite a bit. This one is similar in some ways, although unfortunately I preferred Fran Bow in every aspect. Still, it was an enjoyable playthrough. I'm surprised I could also put this in the <70 Metacritic slot if I needed to. It deserved much better than the 57(!) it got.

Returnal

My game of the year so far! ...Out of the three non-remake/rerelease games I've played this year, one of which I just moved to the under 70 metacritic category. Still, I enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay was about what I expected, aside from being easier than I had heard (I think they may have changed some things in patches,) but it was a lot more compelling narratively than I expected. I still need to get a true ending, though, I think.

Questions: How did you hear about House in Fata Morgana? Do you own it already and/or will you be buying the Switch release?

Had it as a recommended game on Steam a month or two after it released. The (relatively few) reviews were glowing, and the art style was striking enough that I decided to take a chance on it. Pretty odd, considering I don't buy that many VNs, and barely pay attention to Steam reviews, but it certainly worked out!

Already bought the Switch release, although I haven't started it yet.

Astro's Playroom

I had heard people say good things about it, but I expected to bounce off it. I tend to be less enthusiastic about 3D platformers than a lot of people, and I figured it was getting extra credit because it was free. When I booted it up and saw it was going to focus on controller gimmicks, my optimism dropped further. Thankfully, I was wrong. I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially most of the controller gimmicks. I'd buy a full version of this... Well, if it didn't also have to buy a PSVR, anyway.

47. Play a game that's technically unbeatable for at least six hours

Romancing Saga Re;Universe

Wanted something to hold me over until the SaGa Frontier remaster. This runs like garbage on my device, but thankfully there are no forced timing elements like the other Gacha games I've played, and it's just an RPG. Seems pretty okay, no obvious bullshit yet. A lot of the mechanics are obtuse, and poorly explained... Which I guess makes it true to the series. Not going to spend money on it (especially since I don't think it'll live that long outside of Japan,) but I'll probably keep playing as a time killer.

Gnosia

Pretty neat. Less visual novel than I was hoping for, but what was there was cool, and I loved the cast. The way their personalities carried into the Mafia portion of the game was quite well done.

I found the Mafia sections to be pretty damn addictive, but I imagine people who have actually played a lot of Mafia will find them to be a bit too limited, and I know they'll disagree with the logic the game uses sometimes. Trying to find the events to proceed with the story would probably be a nightmare if you didn't enjoy it.
