Because Bernie is smarter than Trump, more compassionate than Trump, more honest than Trump, more competent than Trump, and has better policies than Trump.

Of course, these are the things that SHOULD matter in debates and elections, but American politics are a circus and society is stupid. If more people vote for Trump than Bernie, then guess what? We deserve Trump.

Fun fact: it wouldnt let me post this topic until I took the apostrophe out of doesnt. Strange.

But yeah, I despise both Trump and Biden, but the former is obviously a bully who will use Bidens mental decay to make a fool of him. Biden does not have strong enough policies to counteract having his mental health exploited. In fact, hes far more similar to Trump than different. Both have shitty characters, so even that wont really level the playing field for either candidate.

But then again, Trump is doing such a crappy job at handling this crisis that it may not even matter. Who knows. Looks like once again, its a battle between the lesser of two evils what else is new?

No. I'm positing that if society were properly educated and taught critical thinking skills, then in many ways we'd be a lot better off than we currently are.

Not every has the same capacity for learning

This applies to literally everything. Why are you singling out critical thinking skills?

and not every learns the same way can't expect teachers to have an individual curriculum designed to suit each student.

It's not about having an individual curriculum designed to suit each student; where did you even get that impression?

You need to define compassion and critical thinking if you want to teach them, which is why we don't.

In this context, compassion would simply mean empathy. If people are smart but don't care about each other, society still suffers. If people care about each other but are gullible/naive/impressionable/unreasonable/etc., society still suffers. We need both.

We teach reasoning skills.

AKA, critical thinking. The ability to reason is an integral part of critical thinking.

People's individual intelligence determines how useful that is.

Which is why our best bet is making critical thinking a cultural norm, so that everyone has a fair shot. Obviously, some will be better at it than others. But even the inclination to critically think is better than not even trying.

By the way, "critical thinking" isn't the same thing as being gullible enough to gulp down any half-baked nonsense hook, line and sinker because of the daft delusion that the further away from the mainstream and towards the fringes you venture, the closer you must be to "the real truth".

Yes, this is true. I know quite a few people who think they are enlightened simply because they distrust mainstream media, yet still hold asinine beliefs about the world. One person in particular comes to mind: a chick Im friends with on Instagram, whos constantly posting about how vaccines are evil and how every celebrity worships The Devil...

Have you applied critical thinking to this theory? Do you think it's realistic to expect a notable behavioral change in the majority of people?

Yes.
If the majority of people are taught to be BOTH compassionate and critical in their thinking, society would certainly be a lot better off in a multitude of ways. Obviously, there will always be exceptions; assholes and idiots would still exist. But more often than not, people are generally the products of their culture, so instilling them with a strong sense of goodwill and critical thinking skills would definitely improve society.

Two things change society: technological advancement and violent restructuring of social institutions.

Technology makes life more convenient for human beings, whichin some waysallows us to coexist more peacefully. It does not, however, prevent stupid people from doing stupid things. No matter how technologically advanced we are, if a king/ruler/etc. still uses superstition to deem homosexuality punishable by death, then the world is a worse place.

IMO, our biggest enemy is the fact that as a whole, we're a poorly educated population (by design, of course) that's taught to be mindlessly obedient over skeptical and curious.

This root problem affects virtually everything about our culture. It's why people vote for race & gender over policy & competence; it's why people still don't believe in evolution; it's why people think highly processed foods are healthy so long as they say "low-fat"; it's why people think it's mandatory to spend at least 3 months worth of rent on a wedding ring; it's why people still trust mainstream media, despite that it's owned by wealthy elites who manipulate information in order to brainwash the public into adopting beliefs that serve against their own interests, thus maintaining the status quo.

In my opinion, none of this truly changes until critical thinking becomes the norm. People MUST learn to be logical, skeptical, and objective in their reasoning. Until then, we stay losin'.

This, but being fair, the average person wouldnt know where to start. Theyd do a bunch of unnecessary low-intensity cardio, never lift weights, or get conned into buying insert overrated food because it has been marketed as healthy. For example, an avocado has way less sugar and carbs and have more potassium than a banana does, but people still buy bananas believing it is healthy for you despite it being almost exclusively made up of carbohydrates and sugar. The first step to eating better is to forget everything youve been taught about nutrition.

I liked DBZ as a kid but I don't really see any reason to go back to it.

As a kid, it was easy to like characters simply because they were strong; now I look back and I'm just like, "Why would Gohan let Super Boo fight the kids when he's clearly up to something? Why would Ten decline an opportunity to get stronger with the RoSaT? Why did Bulma just randomly start flirting with the psychopath who killed her friends?" Too much shit happens without proper build-up/justification, and it breaks immersion because it's so obvious that the writer only does it to move the plot in a specific direction.

Even then, I feel like the anime does certain parts better. Having everyone try to take down Cell instead of just gawking at Gohan struggling to do, for example. Making fights like Yamcha vs. Ten and Goku vs. Majin Vegeta far more interesting. The dub in particular making Boohan psychologically manipulative. Etc.

-Namek saga: Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, and Piccolo are the front-runners.
-Cell saga: Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and Piccolo
-Boo saga: Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Goten, and Trunks
-GT: Goku. A little bit of Vegeta towards the end.

Come on, bro, you know Yamcha was a cheerleader by the time Tien showed up for the 22nd tournament. Krillin was outmoded by the time Piccolo came about. Tien stayed 'relevant' for King Piccolo, but was basically a joke character by the time he fought Goku again in the 23rd tournament.

You can't blame Vegeta for making them irrelevant. Goku and Piccolo were responsible for that. If you ask me, Vegeta is one of the major components that makes Z so much better than basic DB. A character like Goku needs an actual counterpart who can keep up with him, or at least one who can mimic his trajectory.

Here's the thing though: prior to the android arc, the humans were still trying to keep up with Goku, or at least stay in his league. They were still dedicated warriors who didn't want to get left in the dust. And with Z being decidedly more serious than OG DB, the opportunity to develop their characters in meaningful ways was right there. The saiyan and Namek sagas told us about Goku's heritage, but once all that was over, we could have reset and made Goku and his friends the focal point again, with Piccolo serving as the stoic rival. But once Vegeta survived, the story was written to subvert the potential of anyone who wasn't a saiyan; they're the warrior race, after all, and given that the android saga gave us four of them, that was enough to cast away with those puny humans for good. Who needs a bald midget, a hairy wolf dude, and a three-eyed freak when you've got this super cool sword-wielding guy from the future, who happens to be the son of the super cool antihero from the previous story? Piccolo got to stay relevant a little longer, but eventually, even he was rendered background material.

Used to be a major fan, but the more I think about it, the more I find the series...frustrating. So many characters with potential who are quickly thrown to the wayside. So many plot contrivances and inconsistencies. So little in the way of nuance. And though Vegeta was awesome on Namek, his continued presence ruined the series, IMO. He was the catalyst for the show becoming saiyan-centric, while characters like Krillin/Tien/Yamcha were reduced to cheerleaders. The series has now just become a light show of flashy animation shortcuts, and the tradition of sidelining all but one or two characters still remains. Its hard to engage beyond nostalgic fondness.
