Think of the hatred necessary to do these types of things. Think of the hatred and widespread lack of empathy it takes to do it in a group. Think of hatred and indifference it takes to take pictures and souvenirs and send postcards of your actions to your family, and yet the government does nothing or even actively cheers you on. It may even be government officials stringing people up. Imagine that was proceeded by hereditary commercialized chattel slavery. Then followed by/concurrent with Jim Crow segregation. Imagine all of that and then thinking all that hatred went away after MLK made a speech or LBJ signed a law. Even while black people continue to be poorer, less healthy, de facto racial segregation actually increases in many ways, millions of black people are locked away in prisons and more are harassed, survived, or killed by police.

Despite all of this, many people thought racism functionally ended up until two weeks ago, and even now. The simple statement that Black Lives Matter was and still is vilified. People say never forget 9/11, but then turn around forget and say you should forget slavery, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration and that you are just whining or race baiting or refusing to take personal responsibility when you mention all of this. What a trip.

The barbarism in these lynching accounts (on black bodies over this 400 year period in general) is just something that never fails to make me recoil in horror.

We tend to think that this is ancient history but these kind of things persisted for decades after Mary Turner's murder, so much so that it prompted 6 million of African Americans to move from the south to the north between 1916 and 1970.

Coopers threat brings to mind the most infamous false accusation by a white woman, the one that led to the killing of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old teenager from Chicago, who was lynched in Money, Mississippi, in 1955.

After being accused of whistling at a white woman, the teenager was kidnapped from his uncles home, tortured, and riddled with bullets. His body was wrapped in barbed wire attached to a 75-pound fan and then thrown in the Tallahatchie River. Several decades later, the woman who accused him of flirting with her admitted much of the story was a lie.

A similar accusation was made in 1920 against three black circus workers who were lynched in Duluth, Minn. Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, who worked as cooks and labourers, had arrived in Duluth, only the day before with the John Robinson Circus.

They were in town for a free street parade and one day of performances on June 14, 1920, according to the Minnesota Historical Society.

That night, a 19-year-old woman named Irene Tusken and her friend James Sullivan, 18, attended the circus. At the end of the evening the pair walked out the rear of the main tent, according to the historical societys account. Nobody is sure of what happened next, but in the early morning of June 15th, Duluth Police Chief John Murphy received a call from James Sullivans father saying six black circus workers had held the pair at gunpoint and then raped Irene Tusken. A physical exam found no evidence to substantiate the accusation.

Police arrested six black men. The newspapers reported the alleged assault and, by evening, a white mob estimated between 1,000 and 10,000 gathered and forced its way into the police station. They met little resistance from the police, who had been ordered not to use their guns, according to the historical society. After a sham trial, Clayton, Jackson, and McGhie were declared guilty.

The men were tied to a light post, as shown in a photo that was made into a postcard, a grisly practice that lasted for some 50 years. In the image, two men hang by ropes from the pole, their shirts ripped open and their feet dangling, while another lies on the ground. A group of white men in topcoats and suit jackets, some smirking or smiling, surround the bodies.

True. A lot of them got away with it. Even when white women admitted they lied about being harassed by black men, who were later lynched, those women walked free.

the murder of Mary Turner in 1912 has got to be one of the most horrific and disturbing ones.....

The next day, a mob came after Mary Turner. The mob tied her ankles, hung her upside down from a tree, doused her in gasoline and motor oil and set her on fire, the NAACP reported. Turner was still alive when a member of the mob split her abdomen open with a knife and her unborn child fell on the ground. The baby was stomped and crushed as it fell to the ground. Turners body was riddled with hundreds of bullets.

Many of the black people lynched were never formally accused of crimes. Some were lynched simply for addressing a white person in a way the white person deemed inappropriate. Others were killed after being accused of bumping into a white woman, looking a white person directly in the eye or drinking from a white familys well.

There is a depth of hatred in the bone marrow of this country that supports the killing of the black body, said CeLillianne Green, a historian, poet, and author.

The country was built on racial ideals of white supremacy, Green said. Forty of the 56 founders who signed the Declaration of Independence, as well as 10 of the first 12 presidents were slaveowners. The Constitution did not recognise black people as fully human, counting enslaved people as three-fifths of a free person.

Do you think Swift is right that confederate statues are humiliating and should be taken down?

https://www.towleroad.com/2020/06/taylor-swift-racist-monuments/

Recording artist Taylor Swift on Friday tweeted a message to Tennessee officials and her 86.5 million Twitter followers and 134 million Instagram followers demanding that statues honoring racist figures in the states history be removed from public spaces.

As a Tennessean, it makes me sick that there are monuments standing in our state that celebrate racist historical figures who did evil things, Swift wrote. Edward Carmack and Nathan Bedford Forrest were DESPICABLE figures in our state history and should be treated as such. Edward Carmacks statue was sitting in the state Capitol until it was torn down last week in the protests. The state of Tennessee has vowed to replace it. FYI, he was a white supremacist newspaper editor who published pro-lynching editorials and incited the arson of the office of Ida B. Wells (who actually deserves a heros statue for her pioneering work in journalism and civil rights). Replacing his statue is a waste of state funds and a waste of an opportunity to do the right thing.

Then we get to this monstrosity, Swift continued, referring to a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a brutal slave trader and the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who, during the Civil War, massacred dozens of black Union soldiers in Memphis. His statue is still standing and July 13th is Nathan Bedford Forrest Day. Due to social pressure, the state is trying to overrule this, and Tennesseans might no longer have to stomach it. Fingers crossed.

Added Swift: Taking down statues isnt going to fix centuries of systemic oppression, violence and hatred that black people have had to endure but it might bring us one small step closer to making ALL Tennesseans and visitors to our state feel safe not just the white ones. We need to retroactively change the status of people who perpetuated hideous patterns of racism from heroes to villains. And villains dont deserve statues.

Im asking the Capitol Commission and the Tennessee Historical Commission to please consider the implications of how hurtful it would be to continue fighting for these monuments, Swift concluded.

When you fight to honor racists, you show black Tennesseans and all of their allies where you stand, and you continue this cycle of hurt. You cant change history, but you can change this.

Do you agree that this person is most likely unfit to be a cop based on his homophobic and racist views?

https://www.towleroad.com/2020/06/tn-sheriffs-deputy-fired-for-saying-i-hate-gay-people-defending-confederate-flag/

A sheriffs deputy in Clarksville, Tennessee, has been fired over racist and anti-LGBT Facebook posts.

Josh Wilson, 26, made the posts between 2010-16, before he joined the Montgomery County Sheriffs Department. Among other things, Wilson expressed his disdain for gay people, questioned why its OK to fly a rainbow-colored American flag but not a confederate flag, and wondered whom Black Lives Matter activists would call if they were run over during a protest.

After the posts were uncovered by Scoop: Clarksville, a local news site, the sheriffs department investigated before terminating Wilson effective immediately.

It is my job to protect our citizens and enforce the law impartially and without prejudice. In order to accomplish this, I have to have confidence that our deputies share those same values, Sheriff John Fuson said. The posts made on social media, do not reflect the character or values of this office.

The homophobic and racist cop....
