He's actually right, the term "metroidvania" was invented to describe "metroid-like Castlevanias" before it expanded to cover all metroid-like games

Few things make me feel older than realizing I was around for the beginning of certain etymologies that people today have forgotten the origins of. :(

As to today's question, I'd say some are but some aren't. SotN is as much of an RPG as any of them, but something like Hollow Knight clearly has no connection to the genre. (I do largely agree that people who call Hollow Knight a "Metroidvania" are using the term wrong, but as wrong as it is it's definitely the common parlance and is probably in the group this topic means to ask about.) Even then I'd say SotN itself is far more closely related to Metroid than to any more traditional RPG like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but it's quite clearly a fusion nonetheless.

Definitely disappointed that they're not doing Code Veronica instead, but oh well. This is almost certainly going to be a good game but (as we've discussed in a thread very recently) these are some insanely huge shoes to fill. RE4 basically isn't dated at all so this game is going to have to be a legit 11/10 for people to see it as anything other than disappointing by comparison.

I'd actually say Zelda 2 does qualify as an action RPG but no other Zelda game is remotely close to being any kind of RPG. Super interesting how so many people dating back to the 90s have gotten hung up on that, though!

The term RPG for games is very similar to Slice of Life in anime. Technically the tag can be used for nearly every single work with a individual in it in some form. But it's not because we often have more fitting and specific genres to put things into.

I straight up disagree with this. RPG isn't some vague term that a ton of games can fit - we know exactly what they are. RPGs are all derived mechanically from DnD; you hand-waved strict adherence to mechanical keywords but if they don't have those mechanics then they're actually something else.

We won't really know if these stories are meant to be the new canon until a mainline game confirms it, which may not even happen in 8 if the rumors are true and that one's mostly about Chris and Ethan.

Yay, opinion time! I actually seriously love the game and think it's getting a weirdly bad rap mostly based on its length. And to be fair this is a pretty rough recommend for $60. I paid $45 and I think that's super fair, though.

Basically everything up until the subway crash is legit dream-come-true level good IMO. The streets of Raccoon City are so well designed, Nemesis was on the prowl, the music was fantastic, ahhhhh, it's was all just amazing. The game does lose a bit of focus in the middle as Nemesis turns into little more than a recurring boss, a bunch of stuff is cut and everything sans the hospital becomes much more linear. There's also like, one or two puzzles in the entire game which is wild after RE2make.

But even then, there's a ton of good in there! The game is just plain fun to blitz through thanks to the dodge feeling amazing, and even in the worst third of the game we get a vastly improved hospital. The characterization is probably some of the best in the history of the series, especially Jill who is absolutely at her best ever here. So much sass, and so many quotable lines. Contrary to Snake's post, I actually enjoyed the new take on Nicholai quite a bit, particularly since his new motivations/mysterious backer could actually prove interesting for the story going forward if we believe he somehow made it out alive.

Also Jill wielding that railgun is somehow simultaneously one of the most ridiculous but also best things to ever happen in the series.

Overall it's certainly not a perfect remake just by virtue of how much of the original isn't there, but this is a great telling of the RE3 story and a damn solid entry in one of my favorite series! If it gets any kind of post-launch support like RE2 did (like Mercenaries please god Capcom it would be so fun on this engine) it will be even better. I think this feels like the perfect companion game to RE2make, their differing focuses complete each other in a kind of beautiful way actually. In 5ish years we'll probably be getting "The Raccoon City Collection" with both those games in a single executable and it will feel like one of the most natural things ever, I bet.

Today was my best day ever by a huge margin, holy spumoni. ERI finally crawled back above what I paid for it ($18.14) and MFA is booming. Now to start stressing about when it might be wise to get off. I feel like MFA is a safe one to just hold on to long term but ERI I'm way less confident in.

Maybe! 3 takes a lot from both 1 and 2 - IMO largely the best parts, but it kind of depends on what you didn't like about 1. This one is much more level-based as you explore a hotel where each floor has a very defined theme, rather than 1's more open-ended spooky manor.

This also depends! Stardew undoubtedly has the better farming/farm customization of the two so if that's what you're going in for then go with that one. Rune Factory goes for an "everything AND the kitchen sink" approach to great success with legit crazy amounts of dialogue for its characters, fun combat, a deep crafting system, a way livelier town, an actual plot, etc etc etc.

It's extremely anime though so uh, buyer beware if that's not your thing.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is a great time that I feel may not otherwise be mentioned in this topic. Same for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Astral Chain has already been mentioned but it's so good that I'm mentioning it again. Rune Factory 4 Special is god tier if you've ever even been remotely curious about that style of game. (Harvet Moon-like)

If you like rhythm games, the definitive versions of several Rayark games - Deemo, Cytus 1 and Voez - are all on Switch and have more songs than you can shake a stick at.

RE8 followed by a CV remake would be the dream.

Hopefully RE8 will incorporate characters and story stuff set up in the remakes, especially (RE3 remake spoilers) expanding on and potentially even bringing back Nicholai now that he has a new motivation and mysterious background in this telling of the story.

I feel ready to talk about this game at pretty great length but I think I agree with FFD that it's better to let other folks play through for themselves before this topic just becomes a bunch of that.

I will say though that I really love the game and will be playing a crapload more of it, but it's a complex love that comes with acknowledging a bunch of foibles.
