I don't like the narrative behind the Joker so it makes me bias against the movie. Same reason why I didn't like Fight Club either.

Just because you don't agree with the underlining message, that doesn't make it a bad movie. I try and catch It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas season.

Even if she wasn't wearing a sports bra, they want Aeris to be the beautiful one. There's no point in getting attached to her because we all know what's going to happen.

...unless Final Fantasy is planning a total role reversal between the two women. In which case, fuck the remake still.

I'm gonna be honest, I like this Jill better than the original.

It is worth noting that I left the series after the PS1 era so I can't speak for whether or not Jill was made sexier in later sequels. I can understand being mad about that if she became a hottie mowing down zombies with a shot gun. (Then again, that's kind of a give and take away scenario. If it wasn't a part of who she originally was, it is an expendable attribute.) Measured by her original look, I never saw her as a digital it girl.

Jill never came across to me as a "sexy" character. I'm in favor of her having a more muted appearance and presentation.

Her short hair and street clothes style was never my cup of tea. Ditto for her in full military garb. Maybe that's shitty on my part. Maybe it's a case of, "Fuck you, I got mine," because Ada Wong was still hot in the last game. But I've always felt Jill was more of a soldier/action star. If you have to make one of the female leads hot, I'd say make Claire sexier and let Jill be the STARS elite bad ass warrior.

That's not to say soldiers can't be sexy -- it works well for Samus and Cammy -- but it's also not necessary for Jill as a character. I don't remember any part of the story where her looks factor into her characterization.

I haven't seen 1917. Joker was better than Parasite though.

Parasite is fun and energetic, but nothing about it screamed Best Picture. Bong Joon-ho made a movie with social commentary on financial inequality and that's what the Oscar committee were looking for this year.

I will give them credit. Giving the Oscar to a foreign language film is probably the bravest thing they've ever done. They always go for what's "safe" (Crash over Brokeback Mountain, Driving Miss Daisy over Do The Right Thing). Compared to Joker, Parasite is still a safe choice. But they still took risks and faced some backlash for it. So I will compliment them for that.

You know what, I take it back. I could see myself writing this sequel just to do a deconstruction of sequels.

Some punk who worked for the bad guy's underling's underling's underling learns where the Magical Creation Guffin that gave the bad guy his power is and goes to find it. He never does, but the good guys lose to him anyway. Since he never found it, he goes home and the whole thing might as well have not happened except the heroes are dead. Then, as he's leaving the ice cave where he was sure it was, we see it glowing under the ice right where he was standing and the screen says TO BE CONTINUED, except there are actually no plans to ever continue because this movie is gonna flop like a skinny kid on the blob at camp.

This is the screenplay you write when you don't actually want to make a sequel, but still want to collect a paycheck.

Who would you pick for the enemies in the immediate sequel?

I've seen them all work well enough in different contexts, but it's always a bit awkward starting from scratch when the first movie or video game leaves no bad guys alive to become recurring villains.

I'm curious what CE thinks on the subject.

Look, beauty isn't everything. Femininity isn't everything. We need characters who aren't fighting princesses or superheroes in skirts. But a one-size-fits-all approach is never the solution. Making every woman blah is just as bad as making every woman pink. Variety is everything.

If you like something and I don't like it, you should be allowed to like it.
If I like something and you don't like it, I should be allowed to like it.

Right now, standard procedure is to do whatever offends conservatives or whatever allows progressives to pat one another on the back for doing a good job. I'm not a conservative. I'm not an enemy to be fought. I'm also not a dog to be trained. I don't like this sit-and-roll-over approach to progressive values.

I agree with the baseline values of stronger, more rounded female representation. I think it's great that female action heroes are action heroes and no longer treated as a novelty like they were twenty years ago. I think it's fantastic that female supporting characters are getting their due and their own plotlines away from male protagonists.

But I'm not about dropping hundreds of dollars on consoles and games where the women all look like shit.

I haven't found anything about it on Universal's official site. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places or maybe it hasn't been published yet. But a friend of a relative works for Universal Studios and, apparently, Billie Eilish is set to have a haunted house for Universal's Halloween Horror Nights.

It's not the first time they've done something like this. Rob Zombie had a scare zone last year. Billie Eilish is a bit random though. I'm not really familiar with her beyond her trademark hidden figure and blas facial expression. Is it going to be a house full of good girls meeting gruesome fates in Hell? Or is there more to her young career that can be exploited?

From the list that was forwarded to me, it looks like they're going for a Girl Power theme. Two of the licensed properties have female leads, two of them have strong female supporting characters, and one of them has a female antagonist.
