azul is good! my mom likes it a ton but i prefer less abstract games. it's weird where the line is for me between a generally themeless euro game and a pure abstract, but there ya go

honestly even just listening to the songs youve posted so far from RSE reminds me of how absolutely stellar that soundtrack is

i'm curious what is actually going to end up high on this list when these are all so low tbqh!!

gsc credits music is fine but honestly every credits theme (even the good ones) just pales in comparison to rse's. what a goddamn masterpiece

that was black 2/white 2 thank you very much

but i think pokemon has perpetually been stuck in an awkward transitional period since (and including) x/y

these games are no exception but i truly believe the wild area is the first thing that has felt like the path forward to something actually modern and new in the series

yeah fair enough. i just meant the people actually directly working on making content for the games are potentially on a schedule that's not their call, whether that's nintendo or the pokemon marketing machine

it (and the other general areas around castelia) are undoubtedly some of the coolest parts of the game!
still frustrated the heck out of me how linear it was though

i dont think you could even fully explore the desert resort in b/w until postgame, though i might remember that wrong

there were like 2 optional caves (the one with axew and the one on route 9) and pretty much everything else was left to postgame. the linearity really annoyed me relative to previous games, and was only saved by how loaded and good b2/w2 are imho

black/white og are still my least favorite main games, and hey, that's just my personal taste, i get it
but it's not like sword/shield are particularly unique in their problems

yeah spikemuth is disappointing sure, aside from the cheesy arcade beat'em up references which i got a kick out of

but man that is not a particularly substantial example of anything

also i hate sword/shield's linearity but black/white classic were incredibly linear as well and i remember them getting nothing but praise back in 2011 or whenever that was

once again, different times can have different expectations, sure, but as someone who's followed the series since 1998 i find the hypocrisy of the fanbase to be particularly glaring here

i mean, the idea that the game should be more robust than previous versions because it's on a full-fledged console and costs 60 bucks seems reasonable to me

the idea that gamefreak is lacking in time to make the games as content-filled as stuff like platinum and b2/w2 because they're being asked by nintendo to pop one out every year also seems like understandable criticism

which is why all the hyperbolic responses like "the game is obviously not finished" are just garbage. you can be frustrated that the product isn't better but when you just jump to the maximum extreme it makes me think you have no hill to stand on

i didn't really find sword/shield to be any more lacking than sun/moon or x/y in terms of in-game content. they're all about the same in terms of dex counts and are relatively lacking in post-game content. the only main difference is the dexit complaints tbqh

yeah i think this looks pretty rad in general and i'm totally down with more legendary pokemon but i'm a bit skeptical of them barfing all the old legendaries together in part 2. i guess we'll see how that actually works out functionally when we get there

yeah i think not enough people are giving credit to the fact that having all 400 available mons accessible between just the two games this gen has done a lot for people who are interested in building competitive teams and need a place to start.

i meant more about taking out megas and most legendaries but sure competitive balance has never been particularly exceptional. i still think they tried to make more things competitively viable but that's pretty subjective anyway

sword and shield didnt remove EVs, abilities, and items??
and intentionally made a dex of mons to help foster a better competitive metagame?

the entirety of sword/shield is designed to be more accessible, which meant limiting the number of pokemon and moves in order to create a (hopefully) better competitive metagame and a (unquestionably) more accessible entrypoint for newcomers, without sacrificing the depth of IVs/EVs/natures/abilities/items from previous games. to just immediately undo all of that by barfing the "missing" 490 pokemon back into the dex all at once would really defeat the purpose of what they tried to do, and that's not going to happen.

i'm sarcastic to a point about the dexit stuff, but people mistake what was a concerted effort of game design for laziness, and that's just...whatever. you're not gonna be satisfied until every last slugma and skrelp is back in the lineup and i suppose that's your prerogative, but i think the games are doing alright for themselves tbqh.
