I think I settled for a turn 2 kill but even that was a little tricky.

With that said I think I prefer the art style of the original. It had a unique darker pastel look that has been traded for a more generic anime look. Specifically something about Shulk's face in the new version makes him look like a different person. Still very hyped but I wish they'd stayed closer to the original style while also making it HD.

I was thinking this too. Shulk and Sharla especially look a lot younger now, in a way that isn't an improvement.

They're close, but usually metroidvanias put them immediately adjacent or one room over without any enemies in the way. HK isn't that kind.

I would call it one of the game's (very few) flaws, along with not having enough quick travel points.

If there are no other clues, it's usually Lilina. She fills the Caeda role of recruiting all the random mooks.

That reminds me a lot of the old arguments about SSBM, where some people would try to claim that items were a character balancing feature that would let low tier characters compete with high tier ones. But realistically, high tier characters are mostly the fastest ones, so they can actually just reach items faster than a low tier character, meaning items just make Fox and crew even better!

And yeah, Makalov is definitely a "don't care if he's good" unit for me, but it makes sense that BEXP could redeem him.

Sounds like Deen but I don't know what the mechanic would be if it isn't the turnwheel. The mechanic sounds like pair up or class change but I'm not coming up with anyone from the newer games that fits the rest of the hint.

It's probably not optimal play but I've always tended towards more magic users rather than less. Catch me outside fielding Erk, Lucius, and Canas (and benching Pent for no good reason).

Tanith is my guess. Definitely overshadowed by Marcia despite having one of the most interesting abilities in the series.

Yeah, Vanessa has a lot of advantages on Tana. I like Tana more but it's not for any gameplay-related reason; she needs a lot of babying to catch up to a Vanessa you've already invested in.

I've no good guesses for the clue except maybe Alec and Naoise? They definitely get overshadowed by, uh, every other horseman in FE4.

My first time through FE6 I had Rutger A-support an incredibly magic-blessed Clarine and the two of them broke the mid-game in half.

For the hint, it could be Robin, they have a claim to being the best in Awakening and all the avatars are controversial. I'd say maybe Kris also but I expect Sirius to rep New Mystery here.

Nice write-up for Final Holy War. It really is a chapter that throws everything at you, but you have enough tools by that point that you can handle it, in a bunch of different ways even. As you said, it makes for a great climax. And has probably my favorite player phase music in the game!

Thanks for doing this ranking, I enjoyed reading it a lot. Would definitely read another ranking if you decide to do one.

Oh, well yeah, that's fair then. I guess it just doesn't bother me as much as a lot of Awakening's other map design decisions, because that map has always stood out to me as one of the better ones in that game.

I have an odd amount of affection for Arcadia but yeah it's designed to kill you the first time you play it (and maybe second and third), which isn't good design. You didn't even mention the always-bullshit hidden items to find! Be prepared to search every inch of this slow, obscured, dangerous map~

Yeah, it's a pretty bad chapter, the duel part of it at least. It even makes Bartre vs. Karla look more reasonable because if you fail to prepare for that all you miss out on is a crappy cameo character, it doesn't derail an entire subplot.

Oh, and while it's not quite the Boots shop, you do get the Leg Ring here. +3 move is always a joy, and combined with FE4 road tiles a good mounted unit (if only you had one of those as your main character...oh right, you do) can cross utterly hilarious distances that even Binding Blade never allows for.

By that you mean, give the Leg Ring to Ayra (or whichever favored foot-soldier) so you can pretend she has a horse, right?

Especially since the story here isn't even compelling. I won't go into too much detail, but it's basically just an exposition dump that tries to reveal the truth about something the game has never given any reason to really care about. In general I find Binding Blade's story to be dull and hard to get any sort of emotional investment in, so this really falls extra flat for me.

I liked FE6's story when it was about politics, but the dragon stuff was a serious bore. And unfortunately dragon stuff is all the final chapter has going for it.

I thought Dr Kahl >>> King Dice > Devil in terms of difficulty. Didn't have much trouble with the Devil at all, surprisingly.

But yeah, King Dice is all about learning the minibosses. And getting the ones you want because some are much trickier than others.
