Did it 8 years ago. A buddy of mine was about to get married. Back in college, hed talked about how he wanted to go skydiving, so I offered to take him. It was never really anything Id wanted to particularly do, but figured why not. I paid for the two of us to go, and we had guy jump out to film us.

I never really was nervous during the whole process, which I cannot explain to this day. Since it was our first times going, we had to be harnessed to people who worked there. Went up to about 13,000 feet. The free fall is over so damn quickly... I was supposed to pull my chute at 5,000 feet, and in the video, I actually sorta do a double take when I look at my altimeter on my wrist, because I cant believe its already time.

The descent once the chute was opened was super peaceful and relaxing. I thought that would be a nerve wrecking part, since everything would be slowed down, and I could process that Hey, Im thousands of feet in the air, in place with Velcro, straps and cord attached to a giant piece of nylon, but nah... very peaceful. It was during this time also that I noticed the temperature changing. It was a 90F day, and jumping from that altitude (wearing a t-shirt & shorts), it was cold... but I didnt even notice the cold until this part, when I felt it was getting noticeably warmer as I descended.

Definitely a cool experience. I dont exactly have any desire to do it again, but I think Id do it if I was specifically asked to by anyone who really wanted to do it.

This has been one of the most openly racist items in American society for quite a while, and it baffles me that it has persevered for as long as it has. With just about any racial slur, saying it in public will illicit strong reactions from all people, not just the targeted group of people. Those slurs are recognized as being unacceptable.

And I think that this particular term is the same. If you were to be talking about Native Americans, and just used this term casually while describing them, youd be met with a degree of shock and outrage. But its been seen as an acceptable team name by most people (not all) for such a long time.

it sucks that it took pressure from shareholders with deep pockets at FedEx, Nike & Pepsi to even have these sponsors finally make the request, but at least its a step in the right direction.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/business/fedex-washington-redskins/index.html

FedEx (FDX), a major sponsor of the Washington Redskins, is asking the NFL team to change its name in response to growing pressure from investors who oppose the name's racist connotations.

"We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name," FedEx told CNN Business in a statement.

The delivery services company which sponsors and has naming rights for the stadium the Washington team plays in released its statement after more than 80 groups and shareholders that invest in the company sent a letter to FedEx CEO Frederick Smith calling on it to "terminate its business and public relationships" with the franchise because of the name.

Similar letters were also sent by investors to the CEOs of Nike (NKE), which makes Redskins uniforms and equipment, and Pepsi (PEP), its snack and beverage partner. Those two companies have not responded to CNN Business requests for comment.

CNN Business has also reached out to the NFL and the team for comment.

In the letter to Smith, the investors, who said they represent more than $620 billion in assets, noted that the word "Redskins" remains a "de-humanizing word characterizing people by skin color and a racial slur with hateful connotations."

"Virtually every major national American Indian organization has denounced use of Indian and Native related images, names and symbols disparaging or offending American Indian peoples, with over 2,000 academic institutions eliminating 'Indian' sports references," they wrote.

"In light of the Black Lives Matter movement that has focused the world's attention on centuries of systemic racism, we are witnessing a fresh outpouring of opposition to the team name," the investors wrote. "Therefore, it is time for FedEx to meet the magnitude of this moment, to make their opposition to the racist team name clear, and to take tangible and meaningful steps to exert pressure on the team to cease using it."

The letters to Nike and Pepsi echoed that language. In the letter to Nike CEO John Donahoe, for example, the investors acknowledged that Nike "has taken steps to be more transparent about its workforce diversity." The investors also pointed out that Nike "helped keep alive the public conversation around systemic racism and police brutality" by launching an ad campaign featuring quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the National Anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice while he was playing in the league.

"However, Nike continues to provide uniforms and equipment" to Washington's NFL team, the investors said, adding that "this association with and facilitation of the racism inherent in the name and logo runs contrary to the very sentiments expressed by the company."

As of Thursday night, it appeared that Nike-branded Redskins merchandise was unavailable on Nike's online store. Merchandise representing every other NFL team was listed, though. Nike did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When everyone started yelling at me about it, I was surprised and let them know as much. I honestly thought it was just an abbreviated term, like Brit, Swede, or Aussie.

There's a lot of debate on whether or not it is, but even though you're usually not competing against others, it's a form of exercise, gets your blood pumping, etc.

Yeah, Id call it an activity more than a sport. To me, a sport must involve some sort of a competition to it. Hiking is definitely an exercise, but so is doing jumping jacks, and I wouldnt consider that a sport.

To each their own, though. The term sport is sort of a loose definition, and it can vary from person to person. Some dont consider billiards or bowling to be a sport (I do), while others consider NASCAR a sport (I dont).
