The entire world would have had to go into lockdown at that point to stop it.

I mean it hasn't happened for a hundred years before this. Those are decent odds.

It's a mistake just to look at it as the time frame between Spanish Flu and Covid-19, that's not relevant. We've ridiculously lucked out in what we've ended up with between them, not to mention the continually increasing invasion of humanity into areas that were previously "wild" is increasing contact between humans and wild animals, which greatly increases the chances of any type of virus transmitting to humans, and the more viruses that can do this the obviously higher chance there is that any given virus becomes transmissible from human-to-human.

Prior to SARS the known extent of coronaviruses causing harm to humans was the "common cold". We lucked out with SARS because the symptoms were so obvious/severe that anyone showing them was easily identifiable and assumed to have SARS until proven otherwise, among a few other things.

That was less than 20 years ago.

We're now on our second SARS-related coronavirus pandemic. This one is significantly worse, despite having a much lower death rate, because it is generally not as severe or obvious as SARS and therefore is much easier to spread.

The coronavirus that causes MERS also showed up, with the potential to cause its own worldwide pandemic given the right conditions.

There's many other coronaviruses out there with the same potential (SARS happening actually kickedstarted a ton of the research into this). Most of them are not known.

Ebolavirus outbreaks are becoming more frequent. We've lucked out with those, because Ebola almost never spreads through the air so it is much harder to transmit on a larger scale.

There's still more Influenza threats. We lucked out with H1N1 because despite possibly infecting up to 20% of the world's population, it ended up being less deadly than any regular seasonal flu.

In fact there's a strain of H5N1 influenza that is currently spreading practically unstoppably across Asia, Europe, and Africa that could one day become transmissible from human-to-human (there's already tons of cases of it transmitting from bird-to-human). This is legitimately a huge pandemic risk.

Remember when Trump tried to buy the rights to a potential vaccine so it could only be sold and used in the US? That's not something that would have actually helped them, because the US can't get back to normal if the rest of the world is still fucked.

https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/491140-trump-fires-intelligence-community-inspector-general-says-he-no

Atkinson of course is known for alerting Congress to the whistleblower complaint that led to Trump's impeachment.

President Trump has fired the inspector general for the intelligence community, saying he no longer has confidence in the key government watchdog.

Mitchael Atkinson, who had served as the intelligence community inspector general since May 2018, was the first to alert Congress last year of an urgent whistleblower complaint he obtained from an intelligence official regarding Trumps dealings with Ukraine. His firing will take effect 30 days from Friday, the day Trump sent a notice informing Congress of Atkinson's dismissal.

This is to advise that I am exercising my power as President to remove from office the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, effective 30 days from today, Trump wrote to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Intelligence committees in a letter obtained by The Hill.

As is the case with regard to other positions where I, as president, have the power of appointment, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, it is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as Inspectors General, he added. That is no longer the case with regard to this Inspector General.

Trump said he will submit to the Senate his nominee to replace Atkinson at a later date.

Democrats were swift in their condemnation of the firing, saying Trump was retaliating against Atkinson for raising the whistleblower complaint that ultimately led to scrutiny over the presidents dealings with Ukraine, the focal point of the Houses impeachment investigation.

President Trumps decision to fire Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson is yet another blatant attempt by the President to gut the independence of the Intelligence Community and retaliate against those who dare to expose presidential wrongdoing, said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a vocal Trump detractor.

In the midst of a national emergency, it is unconscionable that the President is once again attempting to undermine the integrity of the intelligence community by firing yet another an intelligence official simply for doing his job," added Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. "The work of the intelligence community has never been about loyalty to a single individual; its about keeping us all safe from those who wish to do our country harm."

Trump railed against Congresss impeachment proceedings for months, claiming he was the victim of a witch hunt and denying claims that he pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals.

Atkinson came out against then-acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguires decision to withhold the whistleblower complaint from Congress, pitting him against the White Houses desire to keep the complaint out of the hands of congressional investigators.

Trump nominated Atkinson for his role in 2017 after he had served 16 years at the Justice Department. One of the focuses of his job was to probe activities falling under the purview of the Director of National Intelligence and reviewing whistleblower complaints from within the intelligence community.

Just totally normal things.

We also don't now where the virus originated from biologically, so we can't be sure to blame civets and pangolins. As of now, it's all guesswork.

Civets are scientifically accepted as the intermediary for the original SARS pandemic.

This one will take some time to ultimately determine, but at the end of the day everyone already knows where it came from, so at this time stopping that is more important than finding out the what because if the where isn't stopped this is just going to happen again, and as a species we absolutely cannot risk Round 3 being worse than Round 2 is right now.

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/us-passport-emergencies/index.html

The US has stopped issuing new passports, unless in a "life-or-death emergency,'' in an effort to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement on its website, the State Department asked Americans to avoid international travel at this time due to the impact of coronavirus. In line with that, it said, it will only offer passports to customers with a qualified emergency.

Examples of emergencies include travel due to serious illnesses, injuries or deaths in the immediate family, it said. Applicants must require travel outside the US within three days, and will have to submit "proof of the life-or-death emergency such as a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary or a signed letter from a hospital or medical professional."

Applications received on or before March 19 will get processed, the agency said.

Individuals needing to renew their passports for future international travel can proceed as usual without the usual option for expedited service (at an additional $60), according to the State Department's website.

Passport processing typically takes six to eight weeks, but the statement notes a possible delay in regular service for renewals submitted after March 20. The statement offers no information on expected delay times.

The virus has ravaged the world, infecting more than 1 million people and killing over 53,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The US is the hardest-hit country, and has more than 245,500 cases and at least 6,000 deaths. Top infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has said the whole country should be under a stay-at-home order.

Thus far, 40 states have issued stay-at-home orders urging Americans not to leave the house.
