You cannot have a story with wherein every character that appears is super developed with layers of complexities unless you're a masterclass writer and your audience doesn't mind bloated works. Giving the less important characters too much screen time distracts from the main protagonists and makes things messy. Most works have filler characters that don't add or subtract from the overarching story, and that's fine. This isn't even about LGBTQIA+ anymore, this is something very basic that any writer on youtube will tell you. Either they were deep in the closet and never told anyone, or they just organically developed a sexually attracted to the same sex over time. Some characters are just gay, because in real life, people are just gay. This type of shit never gets directed at cishet characters. Instead of "x is a bad character because they're forced diversity" it's usually "x is a bad character because they themselves (not their sexuality) add nothing to the story/their thought process is unrealistic/their motivations don't make sense/they clash with the tone too much/etc." But no, apparently being gay is an automatic negative mark. They have to be super duper interesting to make up for being different. Like I said, it's thinly veiled bigotry. Also, I should mention that a character being one dimensional is... not inherently bad. Not every character needs to be round and expecting every character in a story to be hyper deep and multifaceted is really weird because that's not how most stories work. Flat characters exist to contrast and flesh out the round characters, and if they succeed in that then they're good characters. If they were able to push the story along and provide entertainment then they did their job. If the only gays character(s) are flat in a story are flat, then yeah, that's mediocre representation, but that doesn't make them "bad gay characters", assuming they aren't being used to push harmful or offensive stereotypes.
