There was an RPG on PS1 called Guardian's Crusade like that. Basically ever dresser and cabinet in the game had unique text on investigating them. Often there would be little world building descriptions, like long underwear in snowy towns or books about running a business in an aspiring merchant's home. Usually though you'd get variations of your fairy companion telling you to stop looking through other people's belongings. Sometimes you would even obtain money or items there and she would make you put them back.

Bayonetta teases the idea and you can unlock a playable mother in the second one, but only as a skin.

Rosalina in Mario is an adoptive mother to the stars themselves and she's been playable a few times, but that's also not what you're talking about.

The sequel to Okami stars the child of the first game's protagonist, but Amaterasu isn't a mother at the time you play as her and her gender/sex is ambiguous anyway.

Yeah I was gonna mention this too, but the title mentioned RPGs specifically. The way MM is set up with the time travel makes for some cool quests whose effects you can easily appreciate within a single playthrough. And to get everything, you practically have to complete parts of the same quests in different ways. It's just an awesome game in terms of sidequests.

Yes. That was tedious lol. I had to majorly cheese most of the bosses down there every time I played through it. Mostly Lady Luck's CONGRATS!, which is the cheesiest cheese available.

FFX-2 had good ones, largely because of the lasting effects they have on the story. You can rush through the game only doing mandatory missions, then at the end if you explore the world you'll find sad or even just bitter endings to plotlines you missed out on. Or you can take part in all the sidequests and potentially help build shops and services and avert crises. Sometimes completing a mission in one area will change things in another area or open quests there in later chapters. I remember playing through several times and always being surprised at how things would change depending on events that I had thought were unrelated.

There was a period of time when I stopped using them because it's a noob move. Then I realized that you can't use them in battle towers and such, so if you don't use them in the regular game, you'll just never use them. I also realized that I don't care if I'm a noob and that I spent way too long trying to catch these fuckers with 2% catch rates, throwing dozens of ultra balls after carefully whittling them down to 1 hp and paralyzing/sleeping them, and if I wanna use my new god monster to rek some E4 assholes, it's my Arceus-given right to do so.

The story sucks until the very end of the postgame, but even then, the way they reveal things sucks. The art style is nostalgic and weirdly beautiful. The music reaches god tier, particularly in the boss fights. Personally I like the gameplay a lot too. Good game imo, but the criticism it gets is generally fair.
