| Mr Lasastryke 03/13/20 7:20:13 PM #486 | Wanglicious posted... ahh. there is a limit trump has on his policies that does tend to be a little weird: he's got a particularly conservative bend when it comes to federal and state government policies. and i'm quite fine with that really, hell the coronavirus escalation may even be due to state governments stepping up and making decisions themselves. i can't think of a better example for why a strong state - and even city - government is necessary than trump's handling here and it's something that can be agreed upon regardless of where you fall left to right. states' rights and a limited federal government may be traditionally conservative positions but with this reign you wouldn't think so. oh yeah, states' rights is often viewed as a libertarian thing but libertarians just use it as a stepping stone to more radical things because they realize the government isn't realistically just suddenly going to disappear. if the government would leave everything up to the states they wouldn't go "yay everything is perfect now!" then they'd advocate for county rights. they'd want the government to become more local and local until eventually every person is its own "government," which would be the libertarian ideal. (for some libertarians, anyway.) but yeah, states' rights shouldn't be seen as a left/right thing. i'm quite left and i'm pretty neutral towards it. just because you're in favor of more local government doesn't mean you're against big government! --- Geothermal terpsichorean ejectamenta |
