I guess I'll expound on why I strongly disagree with this, even though I do see where you're coming from.

1. If the discussion's not had now, it's never going to be had. It's always either the "wrong time" or of so little salience that nobody cares to have it.
2. More importantly, if you're someone who has been affected by sexual violence (and this won't be true for all such people; I'm sure some of them agree with you), what you're seeing in 95% of the reactions to Kobe's death are messages that he was this fantastic guy. The fact that he had, in his own admission, a non consensual encounter is not even mentioned, despite, as you point out, being something that "everybody is aware of." That sends the message, intentionally or not, that rape is so inconsequential that it can be washed away by somebody's other accomplishments or, yes, good that they subsequently did in their life. I know yesterday was emotionally challenging for a lot of Kobe's fans, but they're not the only people being affected by the news.
I agree with all of this. But there's a way to treat people and still have this discussion. There's a way to not come off as holier-than-thou and engage people in a meaningful discussion and create change. This is, in a way, the problem with this board. Not every event requires only one topic. Co versed in tons cam branch, and create new topics. It's okay.

By invading a topic that's just about processing something to shift the agenda, you are looking to be right, and not be a good steward of this community.

Proper or common, start of the sentence or not. It drives me insane, and I know that I should be a little more gracious about something so minuscule. But I don't know how much more I can take. The event that sent me over the edge today was the capitalization of Month and the lack of capitalization for Batman in the text, "Can we pre-order batman for next Month?"

What is this? What godforsaken world do I live in where the rules of grammar have been thrown to the wind? Why am I such a poor judge of hiring? Who can institute order into this world fueled by pure anarchy?

Calling your opinion milquetoast does not negate the context of the topic and how your posts fit into that. Not every topic functions in the same way. If you need a discussion to vent about this, creating a separate topic feels like the right road there, rather than trying to usurp the purpose this topic has developed and commandeer the narrative. Your posts aren't wrong, but the context of them does you no favors.

The low blow was key to the build. Drew has the argument that not only did he eliminate Brock, but he won the Rumble. Brock can argue that it was delegitimize by his time already spent in the Rumble and the cheap shot. It compels both to a match. It also leaves Ricochet in a position to get retribution

so all the "respect the dead" and "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all" talk doesn't apply, then? these rules only apply to kobe?
I never said that and you know it. This sort of attempt to obfuscate my point by painting it as ridiculous through your isolated lens is rude and wrong. I was tempting to soothe a growing rift and you are behaving petulantly to someone just trying to offer some understanding of perspective.

My opening remark was explaining why you would get pushback on one topic when the other offered little. If Rutherford B. Hayes died today, no one would really care. If Chris Evans died, it would hit so much harder given his relevance and saturation in our lives.

I firmly believe that topics like this are never meant for editorializing. You don't show up to a funeral and begin to curse the deceased. It's bad form. Given our long tenures here and connections, topics like this are our board's tiny tributes to the subjects of discussion, and what really matters here is knowing your audience. If people are experiencing shock and grief, read it, understand it and use that empathy to determine whether your posts contribute positively or negatively at that moment.

i love all the people going "OMG THIS IS NOT THE TOPIC TO CRITICIZE KOBE." topics on board 8 go off the rails all the goddamn time but god forbid this happens in a topic about a dude who was good at playing basketball passing away.

also worth noting that when george h.w. bush had just died, i criticized him FAR more harsly than i just criticized kobe and hardly anyone gave a shit.
There is a large difference in the context of those deaths. Most of us are too young to remember Bush's presidency, but this extremely untimely death has much more impact. There is an emotional component to the shows and whys of death, and the more sudden and unexpected, the less likely it is for people to be receptive to your immediate "Actually" mentality. The best part of valor, I've found, is just to not make a referendum out of peoples' deaths ever. Except fictional deaths. Go to town on those.

Edward Kenway
Voiced by the incomparable Matt Ryan, Edward Kenway's story is one of doing right, in the end. Making good on all of the failed promises pushed to the side for the fleeting hope of adventure and glory, not to mention lining one's pockets with enough to feed and clothe a family for a lifetime. But lost somewhere in that dream was the weight of responsibilities that would leave the world hanging in the balance. Kenway sacrifices his future for those responsibilities, and in a way, turns piracy into an evolution, an extension, of the Assassin's titular creed. It's a really perfect way to begin the second chapter of the series.

Black Mask (Roman Sionis) (DC Comics)

Very interesting take on VECTOR, I can't say I disagree even if RE is my favorite series and I still love the lore regardless. But then, story isn't really the primary reason I love the series anyway.
Roman Sionis is the yuppie Messiah, a character designed to run the cult of business ethics gone primal. For me, Black Mask is always on the cusp of both reaching the peak of the corporate world and seating himself as a new age philosophy guru. Sionis' philosophies focus primarily on identity, naturally, but his real motivations are worldly, diving deeply into the ways one can take advantage of the yearning hopes of the masses to sate a greedy hunger. Black Mask's greatest hope is to convince you that he has all the answers, and fleece you while doing it.

Of course, oftentimes he's no more than a common thug with more aid at his disposal than a simple mafiaso, but when that isn't the case, he can be quite interesting.

No Familiarity; Appearance Rating - 8/100
Given that I've watched two episodes of Rick and Morty, disliking them both, I doubt I will ever return to the show. It's quite loud and obnoxious, and the art style looks equivalent to the quality of work you find on a bathroom stall door. This character is no exception, an extremely unpleasant scribble mishmashed with a hodgepodge of boring metallic pieces that I imagine mean something to you, but mean nothing to me.

So stupid that he didn't realize he had a brain all along, the Wizard of Oz (the character, not the film) reveals quite simply that the Scarecrow is actually just a fucking moron, and nothing more. If you are capable of thinking and considering whether or not you have a brain, you have, in that moment, proven so. And yet, this dumbass can't even get through a little bit of the ol' cogito ergo sum. Dumbass.

VECTOR (Resident Evil)
The problem with Resident Evil is that the series remains weighed down by bad writing and worse voice acting. Rarely does a character rise above the preponderance of low-rent Kojima storytelling quality, and these characters generally speak less than the rest. VECTOR is able to surpass the bounds of Resident Evil by having a very unique modus operandi that at least brings new perspective to the more ardent players of the series. This is not to say that Resident Evil is by any means a bad series, just that it is very rare that the dialogue is more than hokey and a character can benefit from said hokeyness by not taking part in it.

Taxi Driver is a riveting, almost emotionally-draining, film. I, for one, immensely respect every part of the movie and every aspect of acting and directing that bolsters this script to a timeless elite tier of greats. But, if I'm to be honest, I don't particularly like the character of Travis Bickle. I don't give him many thoughts. When I think of Taxi Driver, I think of this objectively great film that doesn't resonate within me. I recognize and understand what aspects of the character make him great - objectively, he is - but, personally, I don't care as much as others, and in some ways, that makes me like the character less. Overpopularity often breeds contempt in me.

From the moment he first laced up his running shoes, Desmond proved to me to be a nuanced story of wrestling with responsibility. It took the fate of the world to tether Desmond to the demands of the world around him, and after years of running away from life, he suddenly had reason to run towards it. In my mind, the love of Penny and Desmond is the most beautiful on LOST. There's something transcendent in their conversation during The Constant, a time-crossed tale of starcrossed lovers, and their season 4 reunion really pulls at my heartstrings. Ultimately, Desmond is one of the best characters on a show full of best characters.

Kylo Ren has his defenders - and that is deservedly so. Many people find it easy to separate the writing from the characters in Star Wars, or to selectively canonize personalities in their own minds. As for me, I was never enamored with the greasy, pale face of Kylo Ren until his conversation with Han in Episode IX. That single moment ended up being the only one that captured the essence of something spectacular. Prior to that point, I found Ren to be a rudderless piece yanked around by a studio and two directors as the trilogy began to spiral out of control, and after that scene, the people at LucasFilm saw fit to begin pulling the character in every conceivably direction in the final act of the film once more. But for one brief moment, I saw something brililant in Ren.

Harry Potter (Harry Potter)
A story like Rowling's long-running narrative on the legacy of Voldemort requires a firm foundation with a character like Harry Potter. But Harry Potter himself is hard to classify as a particularly exciting star. This, I think, goes to a lack of exploration in the darkness within Potter's own soul. Touched and tainted by a piece of Voldemort, there are occasional hints at the potentiality for Harry to get in contact with the evil within himself, but I think by and large, the family-film nature of the books makes it impossible to dig too deeply. And maybe you would be sacrificing the inherent heroic purity of the character by doing so. But, ultimately, Harry is a safe protagonist, lacking danger, mired in the tradition of fantasy stars. I guess, you know, that's okay.

As someone who has logged hundreds of hours in both Hyrule Warriors and its latest Switch edition, I imagine that my mind fills in gaps in the character which exist, but I see within Impa the capacity to provide tutelage to Zelda both with wisdom in governing and in fighting, making her a valuable asset with a clear definition of duty.

I detest this form of heel microphone work in wrestling - a character in a scripted drama is not reliant on constantly belittling sports teams or the intelligence of large swathes of a populous in order to achieve that negative connection between viewer and character. While I found the story of MJF's turn against Cody Rhodes to be very well-done, I've since walked away from his every promo feeling that the character is hollow, stalling for time. My formative comic book years came in 2002 and 2003, a time when I could pick up all of Helena's early career moves in volume form and experience drawn out serialized stories as single tomes. For me, Helena is a beautiful, unhinged demon that menaces Gotham City in a different way than someone like Catwoman. She's more dangerous, first of all. She bays for blood, and unlike Batman, she sees her war as one against people. Batman's war is one for people. A foil in many respects, Batman has restraint that Huntress lacks the compunction to find. Instead, she aggressively breaks every rule in the Batbook and then fails to understand why that ruins her connections to Batman. The fact that she was fired from the Justice League really speaks volumes for her inability to have self-control. A madwoman. A zealot.

Most of the time, this comes from the strange pacing of those shows, including the weird pauses between lines. Oftentimes, it's as if characters are incapable of changing a facial expression while also talking. One, then the other. In any event, this design seems like a militant child, something that I would likely not like by-and-large. Children belong to the Milford Academy.

His unbridled rage is channeled in cold, calculating brutality, pinpointing his targets of anger carefully. A vigilante he is not, but his tactics are not villainous. They are heroic in a world of hopelessness and devoid of real morality. This makes John Wick a hero. What makes him a great character is the length directors can go to give him artistic flair, to bedeck him in the trappings of the beauty of violence presented in just the right way, and that makes me a fan.

Now, Adam must spend his life searching out Zeta Beams, if only to have brief stints of happiness in the arms of the woman he loves. It's a phenomenally bittersweet story, one buttressed by the pulpy science fiction adventure and exploration that always fills my mind with the impossibilities of other worlds and futuristic technology that might as well be magic to the generations that came before us.
