Edit: Just remember, for example, that Superman's weird CGI upper lip was Joss Whedon's fault because he brought Henry Cavill on for reshoots while he had a contractually obligated Mission Impossible 'stache.

This Snyder cut hype is just people seeing other people hyping it up, who saw others hyping it up

Here's the real deal:

People who love Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition, love Zack Snyder's vision of the DC universe. Justice League was supposed to bring that vision to a larger playing field and eventually lead into Darkseid, as teased by BvS.

Snyder's vision was yoinked from us and replaced by a by-the-numbers "heroes have differences and doubt but then come together to kick ass" movie as made by Joss Whedon in the style of the Avengers films. That's not a -bad- formula, but the Snyder movies had a bit more of a realistic, adult take on the concepts of self-doubt, regret, selflessness vs. selfishness, good vs. evil (and how they bleed together), etc.

I don't want to say the Snyder films are high art or anything, but tonally they're very, very consistent and they scratch a very, very particular itch that Marvel didn't scratch until Thanos in Infinity War--and then they unscratched it by reversing all the tough questions that Thanos made us ask and giving us a dumbed down Thanos in Endgame. Rather than confront a villain with ideals and convictions on par with the heroes, they got a villain with the same name and appearance but none of the gravitas.

We wanted Justice League to stick to the tone of MoS and BvS because we were fans of the hopeless universe being set up--and the return of Superman was meant to be the first "real" hope we got from it. Hope was the theme of the trilogy, and instead of a huge moment where things are bleak and desperate before Superman finally arrives, we got "Death felt itchy and so weird Lois"

It didn't fit. The theme wasn't consistent.

Mutants are a bit of a heavy-handed allegory for marginalized groups, so they have to jump through some hoops to make them hated while normal supers are generally well regarded. The real answer is...mutants basically represent a threat to humanity as a whole. They can come from anywhere, have any power/ability imaginable, and are often first manifested as unstable teenagers with anger issues.

Honestly I'm pretty impressed how they managed to swing that shitshow of a film into this positive thing with legions of fans baying for a shitty directors cut.

The Snyder films (Man of Steel and BvS: Ultimate Edition) have a lot of fans. Mainstream opinion is that they 'suck' but the people who enjoy them really enjoy them. BvS is like my #3 or #4 comic book movie of all time. Infinity War is #1, TDK is #2/3 (tied with Logan) and BvS is #4 if I were pressed to list them now. It strikes a mood and tone that most comic book movies either can't or aren't willing to strike. I love it.

Cyborg and Flash would have gotten more screen time and character development, the tone would have been a lot darker (Whedon changed the color of the final battle, evident if you watch the original trailers--and he also added dozens and dozens of lines of https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BuffySpeak )

He also added that awkwardly paced, unnecessary family of victims in the area of the final battle because he wanted us to have characters to relate to. Or some dumb shite like that.

I really liked parts of it. I didn't like other parts of it so much. Doomsday did not have fucking face lasers or any other random energy powers they decided to give him to make things more flashy, and it's even dumber that afterwards Snyder was like "oh yeah bro that totally wasn't the REAL Doomsday."

I mean...it's clearly not the "real" Doomsday. The real Doomsday wasn't a beefed up clone of Zod or anything of the sort.

I loved it. The ultimate cut, specifically. The theatrical version left out a ton of fairly important development. Especially from the opening scene, a couple of bits about the bullet Lois found, and some details about the wheelchair bomb that explain why Superman didn't do anything to stop it.

TLJ had more emotional resonance, but RoS had some really, really good lightsaber fights. I'd have to tip it to TLJ for the superior cinematography, though. It had some really great use of color and contrast--Snoke's Throne room with the red and black, and Crait with the red and white, were both amazing.
