It was never offensive if used correctly. Crossdressing/transvestites are still a thing separate to transgender. As someone who has crossdressed many times I wouldn't take offence at it personally.

So I got through the dumb Opera section, fuck knows how I'd have done it without save stares. That is quite possibly the most offensively badly designed and tedious section of gameplay I've seen in a supposedly good game. If you run out of time you have to go through the whole stupid Opera singing section again. How the hell did kids play and get through this on the Snes without losing their minds? Not to mention the bizarre subplot with the octopus out of nowhere. Then there's the translation error of the Impressario saying Maria has been kidnapped instead of Celes

I'll never understand the hate FFII gets. It wasn't great I get that, but it had an interesting and unique way of getting stronger.

Levels weren't a factor. Want more HP? Have damage done to you. Want to increase your strength? Deal damage to enemies. Want to improve your accuracy? Have a hit connect to an enemy.

Then again most people abused the hell out of it as soon as they were able, and most in the FF fanbase will straight up attack you for grinding to comically overpowered levels so you roflstomp everything, yet they abused this.
Sounds a bit like SaGa but less random seeming, sounds cool.

I picked right which is funny because I was just about to put my phone down and search the house for my ps3 version of XIII. Also been looking at playing the psp version of II if I can

Hmm, interesting, I loved Frankenstein. What didn't you like about it? For me Naked Lunch just felt... idk, nonsensical and over the top for the sake of it with some of the sexual stuff, but I get that was probably the point. One hundred years of solitude wasn't actually bad from what I remember, like the writing itself, but it kind of drug on I felt like and it wasn't terribly interesting to me.
I suspect I'd just got the wrong impression of how Frankenstein was going to be (blame pop culture) and it felt like a let down in terms of atmosphere and the character of the monster.

That's why I love Naked Lunch, it's not my favourite William S. Burroughs novel but it's very much my kind of writing and subject matter. I liked The Wild Boys more, I think it has more of a coherent narrative while still maintaining that sort of imagery. Good balance. I started reading The Soft Machine and that's like a 100 times more nonsensical seeming than Naked Lunch, I don't think I'll ever finish it because it's the sort of thing I can only read in short sessions so I don't seem to be making a dent in it. Naked Lunch was an easy read in comparison.

One Hundred Years of Solitude seemed really good to me and I read it over a day or so, so didn't really have the issue you did. There's a lot of non English books I'd like to read but I often find it hard to get properly into them knowing I'm reading a translation and not the author's original words.

It's just not fun. I'm 7 hours in and I've decided to quit, I've played other old JRPGs and never had so many complaints.

1. Constantly splitting up the party is annoying as fuck. I like to level characters evenly and try to have a balanced group, although that doesn't really matter much because almost every battle is mind numbingly easy.

2. The world map is unmemorable, hard to navigate and has a stupidly high encounter rate. So more tedious battles.

3. Too many gimmick sections. Whether it's magitek, moogles or defending a place while switching between characters

4. This is another gimmick but it's so dumb and infuriating that it deserves it's own section. The fucking Opera stuff, I play JRPGs for battles, grinding and plot. Not for stupid memory games and having my reaction speeds tested. This is where I have given up, I've put 7 hours in and the game hasn't been fun once. I'm going to play something decent instead.
