I think people here severely underestimated Hollow Knight. With all the talk of respect voting, it always seemed odd that a game with a good reception from a B-tier at best franchise was the favourite over one of the most respected games of the generation. Though I certainly didnt expect a stomp like this.

Really, dont think of indie games as distinct from other games. They are just games without a publisher or big company attached. They are taking the place of small to mid-size games and games from smaller publishers that have become less frequent.

Id say most of TYBW is up there or above Soul Society, and about half of Arrancar is as well. But that half is kind of split up into small chunks - I actually found the first half of Hueco Mundo to be the drag!

Bleach at least actually put some effort and money into its filler. The main filler arcs are pretty good, especially the last two. However for the sake of pacing its better to skip and come back later.

Also anybody who says it just gets bad after Soul Society is wrong. Its the single most boomer things were better in my day anime stance you can have. The truth is Bleach goes up and down - some of the best stuff is near the end and the worst stuff is near the start, and vice versa!

Many of the security measures people are talking about were commonplace outside of the US in the 90s and earlier in many countries. The Iraq War it led to is a much much bigger story than 9/11, with a much bigger impact. Or the Syrian Civil War for that matter. The global financial crash is also a bigger story. And if you want tragedies there is the 2004 boxing day tsunami that killed over 200,000 people. Hell, the Yugoslav wars lasted for ten years, killed ~150,000 people, displaced 4,000,000 and completely restructured that area. Oh, and the fall of the Soviet Union!

This idea that 9/11 is the most important thing ever is as Ameri-centric as it gets.

I always feel this is massively exaggerated. The Xbox 360 probably outsold the PS3 worldwide (360 data is very outdated so not sure) and only about 60% of its sales came from North America and the UK. Even when you factor in the rest of the anglosphere the 360 did very well in Europe. It is entirely possible that the Xbox outsells the PS5 on the strength of NA+Europe+Developing markets.

This was clearly supposed to be their GDC talk so its okay that they styled it the way they did.

Audio stuff was cool. SSD stuff was really cool.

Looks like a significantly less powerful machine than the Series X though, and not full backwards compatibility at launch though. Looks like it will come down to cost and software for Sony.

I have a question.

Why did the 2005 Nintendo boost happen?

2005 was the end of the dark ages for Nintendo as a company, but most of the effects hadnt been felt yet. The Wii wouldnt come out until 2006 and its big titles were mostly unannounced, the DS was out but didnt really pick up steam until summer. You would expect the big boost to be in 2006, and indeed Nintendo kicked arse that year. But why a year earlier? Was it DS hype? E3 2004 (TP reveal, Reggie debut, etc.) hype? The start of Squares slow decline making Nintendo seem better?

I cant think of a single major shift that hasnt had a clear explanation except possibly that one.

Completely not true if funded correctly. Pre-austerity wait times were much lower, and they still often are if outside of London. In fact, public care actually outperforms private care because it doesnt need to turn a profit. And having a private room definitely doesnt make it right that having a baby costs $10k+ in the US!

I was born and raised in the UK then moved to Ireland which has a much more limited system. The differences are night and day. Any theoretical improvement in care does not make up for the imposed cost (which is heavily capped - nothing like the US) of the Irish system. To the point where people are less healthy because they actively avoid care due to the costs. And the care isnt even better! It is no accident that Ireland is regularly ranked near the bottom of Europe in terms of healthcare.

Also: you can still get private healthcare in the UK. So it is not even a correct comparison at all.

A lot of the indies are games that are depending on word of mouth, voter respect, and time for people to play the game. Polls close to release are meaningless for them.

From what I understand, Sonic Team sees fit to reinvent the wheel every time they make a new Sonic game. They never actually iterate on any of their ideas, so thats why things fluctuate so much. Its also why even the best ones never go above good. If they had kept working on Colours and Generations, that is an ingredient for sone very good 3D Sonic. But they never actually worked on that.

Persona 5 sold millions of copies when no previous game in the series had sold a million. It was also the highest rated PS4 game of that year and I believe ever to that point (until God of War came out). On GameFAQs, it is the second highest rated game in the contest behind BotW and had over 5000 votes. Then there are its polls like Leon said. This isnt Persona 4 2 this is the true breakout moment for the series.

Galaxy was a big deal but Odyssey was bigger. It was the return of core Mario games, you had a song from it topping itunes charts, its two main trailers are Nintendos two most viewed game trailers ever (with the E3 trailer being widely regarded as one of the all-time great game trailers) and then it came out and got as good or better reception than Galaxy and became the highest selling 3D Mario by a lot. Its the most hype Ive ever seen around a Super Mario game by a long way.
