I'm talking about the original story, not the rioting. No need to degrade yourself to insults.

Even that is a pretty bizarre take.

Do you think the media should have reported on Emmett Till or was that just another isolated incident as well?

A lot of these conditions are media sensationalism, trying to make national headlines out of a single local story. Not that the problems don't exist, but that they're being magnified 1,000% due to over exposure and hype.

Awful take.

1) The media was instrumental to MLK and getting his message out. He dominated the media by the time he was at his peak.

2) It is necessary for the media to be at the rioting/looting. Argue however you wish about the current state of news media in the US but one of the primary functions of the media being on the ground in situations like this is to prevent state violence and/or to document it. That's why its often so important for the media to be on the ground in literal war zones. It's a lot harder for states to commit genocide with all eyes on them.

When people say shit like... "hurrr the media shouldn't cover stuff like this! They should only cover 'positive' stories!" one should immediately realize this is what actual fascists say.

Hey btw... this is EXACTLY what MLK was talking about when he talked about riots. That people were condemning the riots more than the conditions that led to the riots. He wasn't condemning the people rioting, he condemned the people who did nothing up until the point that riots broke out.

Funny how the first part of that speech is getting left out a lot today...

MLK understood why riots took place, but he damn sure never advocated for them.

Nobody argued that MLK advocated for riots.

People are invoking MLK to shame the communities that are rioting. That's the problem. MLK wouldn't shame people rioting. He shamed the people that did nothing leading to the conditions in which a riot manifests in a community.

Riots are bad.

But we should recognize that there are two different kinds of people saying this. One person wants to fix the underlying systemic issues that led to rioting so as to raise the standard of living in that community and prevent rioting in the first place. The other person just wants to condemn the community rioting and has never been interested in actually fixing the underlying problems.

The states that Trump needs to win are governed by Democrats

WI has a Republican supermajority in in the legislature but MI and PA I believe are both normal.

My knowledge of electoral law in the US is a bit hazy but my understanding is there's not really a way Trump himself could make a law saying "no mail in ballots on election day 2020"

But I'm not worried really about Trump doing it. I'm worried about the GOP apparatus as a whole. They have gotten pretty fucking good at voter suppression.

I think people are also not taking into account how much the pandemic might affect voter turnout, especially if the GOP successfully manages to stop mail in ballots in some states. That's by far my biggest concern. I can just imagine the GOP taking this as an opportunity to do a literal genocide of disenfranchised communities.

I wouldnt be surprised if the virus screenings did more damage than good. Those were some really packed crowds, a perfect spot for a virus to go around.

Wasn't the virus screening that caused those crowds. It was because people thought they had less than 24 hours to get on a plane or they would be stuck in Europe indefinitely. All because Trump literally didn't understand his OWN travel ban.

It's because Trump banned China travel. Can you imagine what a shit show it would've been if he hadn't? Cali gets so many visitors from China.

Trump banned travel from China the day AFTER several major airlines cancelled all flights from China and his ban only pertained to Chinese nationals, not business people still going to and from China.

Furthermore, his later 'travel ban' likely exacerbated the problem by him completely failing to accurately communicate what his Europe travel ban actually entailed in a live emergency national address. The result being that airports were immediately overrun by people standing shoulder to shoulder in massive crowds desperate to get back to the US. We now know that the majority of first cases in the US came from Europe.

Thanks Trump!
