Because if you go all in on accountability, you have to take that accountability completely out of the hands of police departments themselves. No more investigating your own officers and never finding anything wrong.

for what it's worth, this aspect has overwhelming popular support and has for years. iirc it was a 2016 or 2017 poll that had it like 79% approval. nobody likes the internal investigation bullshit.

Unlike the federal government, states are required to have balanced budgets so they don't really have much of a choice, if they're running a deficit they have to make cuts even if they're draconian.

It's why it was important that the federal government actually help them out with COVID-19 in giving them money to cover the massive unexpected expense but idk McConnell is okay with them just going bankrupt what could go wrong.

oh i totally agree on that aspect. the feds not helping will just end up hurting them. ironically, police will be defunded after all, in every state, because every department is going to see big number and decide "we cut there."

like in that budget right there, on page 8, you've got a basic summary point to start with:

$3.7 billion is spent on full time salaries.
$725 million on OT
$575 million on additional gross pay
$130 million on benefits + unsalaried

...and the combined aspects of various services, charges, supplies & materials, and property & equipment rounds out to around $600 million, the last two categories $176 million at that. ...and that's the full budget. is there a problem with OT being higher than literally everything else, of course. but it's wages that are gonna get wrecked quick.

Why do you say that? Why not just restructure the massive amount of funds they currently get?

i mean that's necessary too, and it's gonna happen regardless due to corona. take NYC - relevant on both issues. we're looking at a budget deficit of at least $9 billion. everything is getting cuts, NYPD included. i'm sure there's a lot of waste in there that isn't necessary. budget is $6 billion on NYPD.

first number to note, there's 38-39,000 cops. that's a lot of money in salaries alone.

but a cop makes $42,500 when they start. over here that ain't much, you normally can't live on that alone. yes, there's very good benefits involved, but benefits don't pay rent and they don't pay food. you're making a slightly above entry level job at a much greater risk. now there is overtime pay that can be very helpful but it's also pretty much necessary early on, which shows a massive flaw in the system's starting salary. also the salary does improve dramatically but it means you're eating shit for a while there. on this aspect, like all major jobs, they owe a lot to this improvement to the unions. you know, those things normally defended by the left but conveniently aren't here? yeah, those things. it's because of that cops who stay on the force for 5+ years make some good money.

if your goal is to have a force of well educated, well paid, well trained professionals? you're gonna spend more to do it, not less. i'm not sure what people think the costs are but the overwhelming majority is going to the usual paychecks. OT is a notable value but still a fraction of that. equipment and supplies aren't much. bluntly, if you cut funding you're cutting salaries, which will only produce the opposite of what you want because those who are well educated and want decent pay won't go there. those who are well trained will have significantly better opportunities elsewhere. those who lack education, lack training, and aren't professional will be the main ones signing up along with cops who will become either disillusioned and leave or rely on corruption to get more of what they want.

their full budget from 2020 is here. ultimately when you end up breaking it down you end up with a picture of a department that's pretty well squeezed as is.

https://council.nyc.gov/budget/wp-content/uploads/sites/54/2019/03/056-NYPD-2020.pdf

i don't know how the supposed idea of a billion dollar cut is gonna work in that budget. they honestly don't make much for what it is.

in other news, bernie had an interview with an interesting answer on issue of police.

In that letter to Schumer, you got some pushback from some of your supporters for a proposal to give better resources to police departments. [The letter argued for ensuring that the resources are available to pay wages that will attract the top tier officers.] The criticism was that a lot of people in the progressive movement now are calling for defunding or abolishing the police. Do you

Do I think we should not have police departments in America? No, I dont. Theres no city in the world that does not have police departments. What you need areI didnt call for more money for police departments. I called for police departments that have well-educated, well-trained, well-paid professionals. And, too often around this country right now, you have police officers who take the job at very low payment, dont have much education, dont have much trainingand I want to change that. I also called for the transformation of police departments intounderstanding that many police departments and cops deal every day with issues of mental illness, deal with issues of addiction, and all kinds of issues which should be dealt with by mental-health professionals or others, and not just by police officers.

I think we want to redefine what police departments do, give them the support they need to make their jobs better defined. So I do believe that we need well-trained, well-educated, and well-paid professionals in police departments. Anyone who thinks that we should abolish all police departments in America, I dont agree.

way better than the current situation.
though he does sidestep the issue that yes, that would mean actually funding them more. no matter how you wanna spin it, to get what he wants there means more money.

Emergencies happen a lot in a city, a small team wouldn't cut it. Emergencies aren't just somebody is armed and attacking, emergencies include domestic violence as well, which are a lot of the cases received.

Bluntly, if you're going to limit safety on one end then raise safety on the other. Doing both at the same time is asking for a black market because of government being inadequate.

I mean the harassment charge and fine are just thinks you shouldn't have period. Like you're the one harassed, you're the victim, there being any penalty is just wrong.

Hey if that makes everything safer than having a police department does, so be it.

If the argument for less police involved less gun control it'd at least make sense. I doubt it'd be safer but it's significantly better than people asking for both which doesn't.

The people who want guns already have them.

My reason for not owning a gun is not rooted in the fact the police departments exist.

Except a lot of new gun owners came on the rise of Corona.
And though we lack data, crisis like this also spike gun sales, with new owners coming out.

that's well and good but when you've got government officials outright ignoring it and policy being written to outright ignore it, it's going to get ignored.

worse, this actually completely proved that yes, there indeed WAS a major political aspect to the shutdown being the way it was as the only reason things are accelerating the way they are is because of political reasons. shit's rapidly collapsing and the only preventative anything that's going up is people wanting guns for protection.

But it sounds good and is well formulated. The tl;dr is the 4 cops should be arrested, Floyd shouldn't have been killed. That said, Floyd wasn't a particularly good person either with a long criminal record and isn't a hero or marytr of some kind. Insert a variety of stats here.

If you want to rebut that formulation, congrats, you're baited.

Rioting and looting does that.
Cops look like they're in over their heads, don't have the situations under control, and while most are in agreement it's mainly not the protestors but others, they're lumped in. Ideally enforcement will prevent fires, looting, and violence but still let those who want to protest actually protest.

With the current discussion, ehile it's not reflected in here uh...

Majority of Americans actually support military usage and it's not by a little. Morning consult poll from the weekend showed that yesterday: 58 to 30.

That includes a plurality of Democrats that's almost a majority. Strongly opposed is a bit higher for them (29% to 22%) but somewhat support is higher than somewhat opposed too. Combining it all gets you 48-43, remainder is no opinion/don't know. That's outside the margin of error range.

Republicans unsurprisingly are strong support majority.

Independents though are of note as they'v a majority of support as well. Strong support being the most popular, somewhat support the second.

Age plays some factor but Gen Z is the only one majority opposed. The rest aren't even a plurality, they're majority in support. Even millennials only hit 35% total opposition.

And finally, if we go by ethnicity all are majority in favor but two: Hispanics are a plurality in favor but not quite a majority (48-34) and blacks are a plurality opposed but not quite a majority (37-49).

Ultimately, people support the protests. They've issues with cops. They don't approve of Trump's behavior. But a very notable majority also approves of using the military to take better control.

Well, as long as those neighborhood gangs aren't stepping in front of the looters or knocking their hats off, right?

I mean gangs stepping in are typically trying to get rid of the would be looters. Why block the way or assault when your intention is primarily to get them to fuck off and never come back, under threat? You save that for after.

Alternatively they get involved when the looting is actually happening. At which point it's literally happening so there's no assumption necessary. They ain't asking shit either, they're going on the "break our windows, we break your face" standard. Gangs have become the community protectors and put their beef to the side, which is rather interesting to see.

I know that's how the story goes but if it's a sword in the middle of the street, hard to tell how you're defending anything. If he chased them it's different than simply defending. One's defending yourself and your property, the other's attempting to restrain or revenge.

But either way it's a pretty shit beat down and the skateboard hit is attempted murder which is my main objection - it's fine to categorize that one.

They are, however, assumptions and one you should not get involved in as a third party to that extent. You've still got no proof. A reasonable conclusion, yes. But no proof. No actual evidence.

If looters can be murdered for looting, inconveniencing them should also fall under the category of "acceptable" behavior.

Note that I keep specifying the business owner in this. His land, his property, his livelihood. And unlike the other case, these guys were actually caught in the act.

Ill be honest, I have never understood the rhyme or reasoning as to why and when you switch accounts and have never assumed anything nefarious by it

Different devices. Pretty much it.

Theyre not awful people because of this. Theyre awful people already

They were deliberately lying about this to create a false counter-narrative that rioters were attacking and murdering innocent people

I don't think you can consider that one lying, just them being wrong. Small but distinctive difference there, the initial vid had his head basically curbstomped with a skateboard and blood pouring out of his head without his moving. Him not actually dying doesn't remove that being a legitimate case of attempted murder. It's a horrible act either way.

Uhhhh

It's standard defense of your property.
If someone's looting your store, you got a right to defend yourself. I mean the classic case of this in riots would be the rooftop Koreans from the LA riots.

Will all the awful people who lied about him being murdered retract their statements? I doubt it

I mean... He looked pretty fucking close to dead and if he didn't get medical care as fast as he did probably would've been. He got his head bashed into a pavement with a skateboard from a prone position and had some massive cuts.

Why would they be awful people for having to downgrade it to attempted murder?

So, wait.

Yelling at looters and knocking their hat off = crazy bitch
Shooting looters = fair game

I'm trying to keep track here.

Once again.
She lacks confirmation of it. And you're not including her chasing them, her blocking them, her trying to dox them. All that makes her a crazy bitch, yeah.

Business owner defending his business is a different story entirely. It's the person directly harmed catching people in the act. He's got a right to protect himself and his property.

The who is different, the facts are different.
