I mean, the game goes out of its way to point out it can be competent in disc 1 (barring the obvious train coupling/decoupling physics) before going completely off the rails immediately thereafter.

Which, as it turns out, is precisely the moment when Squall begins to mature from his "derp morality is relative and everything is srsbusness" nonsense into a character who follows his own convictions.

Now I'm not gonna pretend crap like the orphanage twist was brilliantly written or anything, or even that it was part of the joke, but I mean, it's a game where your school starts flying, then crashes into the ocean, then turns out to be secretly run by an alien who lives in the basement, then gets placed under the command of a 17-year-old who promptly suspends all education to go fight a sorceress from the future before immediately resigning, only for the school to stop even being a thing off-screen.

If you somehow didn't pick up on its extremely heavy-handed attempts to get you to lighten up, that's not the game's fault.

The more I think about ep9, the less I like it.

I doubt it'll ever be 8 bad (let alone prequel bad) but it was just so... excessive. Hey remember at the end of 8 where the entire remaining rebellion fits on the M Falcon? Well now they have to fight a hundred Star Destroyers. Er... Make that a thousand. You know what, make it a million. Oh and they're all Death Stars. And you know what, they don't even matter actually because the Emperor can just sorta wave his hand and destroy them all.

I think you're confused on what power is. It's more like just the ability to do stuff. Said stuff is not necessarily good for you.

In a sense, Vader had no power because he answered to the Emperor on every decision, but that's not the Force's deficiency. It's just the Emperor being an ass.

In lots of ways, yeah.

It's one of the oldest existing series in the JRPG genre.
It's one of the most iconic series in the JRPG genre.
It's kinda hit and miss but it's historically been pretty solid for what it is.
It's got lots of haters despite being nowhere near the worst offender.
