You should be able to express your opinions without shutting down other people and trying to ruin their lives.

Ok now we're getting somewhere.

See this is quite a different statement to your first one, where you said you just don't want to be called a racist or a bigot. So you want to be able to express your opinion without what specifically. People calling your boss and telling you exactly what you said, and your boss then making their own decision in accordance with the culture policy of the company?

I know what you think you want, but you need to be clear on how you think this should work in practical terms. Should the government regulate all businesses with a free speech law that demands any employee can say whatever they want without the company ever being allowed to fire them?

@pinky0926 I think @shockthemonkey further proved my point.

What is your point? You've yet to actually express it with clarity. Hypothetically, if you are allowed to say anything you like on any platform whatsoever, would I be allowed to call you a racist?

If you were unclear of my point btw, it's this: you pretty clearly have expressed your opinions and absolutely nothing happened other than some posters might call you an idiot. Where is the problem?

1) You are criticizing me for being against criminal activities which is ridiculous.
2) We both know that the moderators have shut people up multiple times. And they are pretty mild compared to the twitter mob.

1) So in other words, I'm expressing my opinion just as you are expressing your opinion. You don't wish me to be able to do that? You don't agree with my argument, therefore you don't think I should be allowed to make that argument?
2) So be specific. Do you want government to regulate private businesses and force them to have an open free speech policy? Remember it's not that you can't say it. It's that you can't say it on gamefaqs, in accordance with their own T&Cs.

3) Assuming you do want that level of government regulation, what would that free speech law entail? You can say anything you like, but other users are banned from being critical of you?

Looting and rioting are criminal activities. Am i supposed to condone criminal activities now because the left is telling me so. You are basically confirming my point right now. I do not even have the freedom to be against criminal activities.

At what point did I put a hand over your mouth and prevent you from saying anything? Consider it objectively. Am I actually oppressing you right now or is it just comforting to feel that way because I don't like what you're saying?

The only thing that is happening here is that I am criticising your point of view. So again I ask, what do you want to be able to do? Say whatever you like and the only response be positive?

I respect the Cory Henry pick. Jacob Collier is interesting in this regard too but seems to operate on a level I don't fully access

But I think I'd go for Neil Peart at number one, just because of how consistently I'm wowed by him whenever I listen to Rush

https://youtu.be/UNilsLf6eW4

I feel somewhat the same about Jacob Collier. Like I get it, the song changed time signatures 3 times in 30 seconds and has 25 harmonies going on and he plays every instrument and vocal track himself, that's unbelievably impressive. But if I remove myself from all of that academic insight I just hear what sounds like a bizarre mashup of sitcom themes and prince songs.

Solid choice though. Peart is something else.

I can think of a lot of musicians that I don't particular enjoy listening to, but their talent and level of technique is undeniable and fun to watch.

My number one would probably be Cory Henry. He'll do a ridiculous art tatum speed solo with his right hand, while playing complex jazz chords with his left, while doing a walking bass line with his right foot and varying the dynamics with his left...while singing. Never seen anyone do anything with that level of independence before. And that's just the surface level of technique without getting into the depth of theory etc.

The system has been exposed for what it is now, for better or worse. Trump should never have happened. He should have faded into shame and obscurity after the first shameful comment. But then he made another, and another, and another. Thousands and thousands of shameful comments later, and yet he just picked up more and more momentum with each hateful message.

He's 4 years into his term as the President of the United States, with another 4 years entirely conceivable. Racists and deplorables have been emboldened, minorities are more vulnerable, and politicians have realised that the veneer of decorum and dignity they tried so hard to maintain doesn't actually matter anymore. Trump has completely changed the game. 5 years ago it was inconceivable that a leader would go out of his way to bully his own constituents on social media. Now it's a fundamental political strategy.

pinky0926

Usually when someone says something inflammatory you can attach some context which might not totally excuse it but does at least provide some nuance and discussion to be had on it.

Example argument: "You have to look at the context of Robert Downey Jnr's blackface character in tropic thunder. Without context he's just an actor wearing blackface for laughs, but with context you realise the character he's playing is racist, something that is brought up directly in the movie's dialogue. In other words, racism is a theme in the fiction of the story, and the person being mocked is white hollywood. On that level it's no different than Leo DiCaprio playing a slavetrader in Dhango Unchained.

But then with Donnie it never works that way.

"You have to put it into context. Trump was mocking a disabled person. Yes he did say that exact thing and he meant it exactly like that. The problem is that you're too easily offended."

That's it. That's all the context ever is.

I read this comment today, re Trump:

The entire 2016 election season we saw example after example of what a hateful, unfit pig he was and, after each mind-blowing display his support did not shrink, in fact it often grew, and eventually I understood the 2016 election was about two things: reversing Roe v Wade and racism. Now, after nearly four years of a daily shit show, with 120k Americans dead, 40 million unemployed and countless further examples of his abject unfitness for office, he still has a viable chance to be re-elected and I maintain it will be the same two reasons Americans will vote for him. Those who call themselves Christians will vote to retain and embolden the worst president in U.S. history so they can take away other peoples ability to choose what to do with their body and ensure that white people are better than everybody else. Im so ashamed to be an American.

Made sense to me. The basket of deplorables is big and threatening and y'all better get out and fucking vote this time around.

- police are seen culturally as civil servants and not as government sanctioned bouncers

Things that racist say, which don't automatically make them racist nevertheless known racists seem to love these talking points:

  • Bizarre and unlikely defense of the cop that extends the bounds of logic to absolute breaking point ("The cop probably slipped and his baton fell across his face" or "he was fearful for his life because the shirtless man moved his arm 0.25 microns towards his waist")
  • Nothing even remotely close to this level of benefit of the doubt towards the victim ("He was probably on drugs, look at how angry he is" or "In 1994 he was caught stealing a twinkie from a 7/11 so as you can see he was a criminal mastermind and you have no idea what he could be capable of")
  • "He had it coming"
  • "Cop did us all a favour"
  • "Some protesters are rioting and looting, therefore there is nothing else to discuss here"
  • black people: "thugs, criminals, lowlifes"
  • white people: "disturbed, mental breakdown, had so much potential, good kid gone wrong"
  • antifa: "terrorists"
  • KKK:" confused and misguided"
  • Violent hatespeech towards minority: "just harmless words"
  • Nazi getting slapped after direct provocation: "violent criminal assault"
  • Trump saying something unbelievably racist: "he's just telling it how it is, everyone is thinking it"

One more thing to add.

The publishers need to wise up in this scenario and figure out how to tempt the most buyers with an attractive service offer, sure. No one wants region locking, insane pricing, p2w mechanics, etc.

However, pirates that literally think they are some kind of consumer advocates by pirating stuff are equally ridiculous. If you don't like the terms of the contract you don't sign the contract, that's how to boycott. What you don't do is make a copy of the contract and change the bits you don't like at the direct contradiction of the IP holder.

And if you do that fine, but don't pretend you're doing it for morally superior reasons.

"If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."

This is basically it.

I would rather pay for a game on steam than go and figure out where and how to crack it. The difference has nothing to do with money at that stage and everything to do with convenience.

What relation does this gif have to the subject matter

Also, false. I think it has very little to do with the devs. It's the publishers, the marketing and the expectation of contribution that's the problem.

I watch a lot of bullshit anime, but the main reason I'd ever pirate any is because I can't find it legally except in some ridiculous 400 boxset or whatever. On the other hand I will pay for a crunchyroll subscription.

And even at the end of all that, some people are just assholes and will justify piracy for the most bullshit of reasons even if the game is 120 hours long with hours of free unlockable content and costs $5.

If either person is "paying" for things then it's not a healthy relationship.

You're always paying for things in a relationship, whether it's financially or emotionally or physically or whatever. Both people contribute in whatever way they can, which might be in different ways. People can contribute in different ways. Maybe he's really wealthy and can introduce her to lots of new experiences. Maybe she makes him feel alive again. Maybe she just likes the security and confidence he brings to the table, which men in their 20s don't tend to have.

There's nothing really to judge here. I think it's naive to think otherwise, though. Find me a 20 year old woman who's dating a 40 year old man and 9 times of 10 it's for one of those things 20 year old men aren't bringing to the table- financial security, impressive displays of power, confidence, etc. etc.

I get it if you have a 1pm booking at the jetski place and it's 12.30 you just need a quick bite to eat because someone was slow getting out of bed or whatever, but I don't get people who seek it out

Lots of relationships aren't purely physical

Of course not, but consider the power dynamics at play in a relationship between a 20 year old woman and a 40 year old man

If you're 40 and you want to date a 20 year old hottie, there are plenty of opportunities. Just be prepared to pay for it one way or another.
