The PSX version was Americanized to hell, changing the main characters to appeal more to the American audience (not just their names, but most were made to be more European in appearance, and one character was outright changed to a Black guy). Not only that, but it also removes a very significant part of the story (the Snow Queen quest).

The PSP version has everything that was in the original Japanese version intact, including the characters and the aforementioned Snow Queen quest... But then it also completely upends the soundtrack, going from the 90's dark atmospheric music that fit the game... for a bunch of J-Pop that's more inline with the later Persona games (specifically Persona 4, which was the newest game at the time), with no way to switch to the old music.

I wonder if Atlus will ever release a new version that keeps all of the old music (or allows you to switch between soundtracks)?

Why should I be punished for just attacking the enemy in a JRPG? It seems that starting with Makna Forest, half of the enemies you fight have some kind of Spike on them.

Golden Sun:

• Two games released very early in the GBA lifecycle, garnering a devoted fanbase when it needed to the most due to its impressive visuals and music at the time and being a non-Pokemon JRPG on a handheld (a rarity back then).
• Fails to get a playable rep in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; only gets its MC as an Assist Trophy. This holds true to this day, three entries later after Golden Sun's series debut.
• No games since the second one for nearly a decade, and the third game is widely seen as mediocre and far less impressive to the DS library than the originals were to the GBA library.
• Ten years and counting, and still no sign of any new game despite the third game ending on a cliffhanger, or even a compilation rerelease/remaster; the devs are content with making half-assed Mario sports games which do admittedly make them much more money.

Xenoblade:

• First game is released late in the Wii lifecycle to critical acclaim, but Nintendo of America initially refuses to release it in North America until GameStop steps in. Despite being store-exclusive, sales are stronger in North America than in other regions.
• Spiritual sequel is announced in 2013, and later released in 2015.
• Gets a playable rep in Smash at the very first chance it has, even before said spiritual sequel releases.
• Direct sequel released a few years later.
• Original sees two rereleases, one on 3DS and a fully-remastered one on Switch.
• The series' future is looking very bright.

Of course, the Xenoblade devs did credit Smash for giving the series the boost that it needed, but still. I'm happy that Xenoblade is doing as well as it is, especially since it had every expectation to fail just like many other less-mainstream Nintendo Wii titles. Too bad Golden Sun died off, though. Even if the original game(s) didn't really age well, I still have fond memories of playing them.

That doesn't really disprove his point. Dream Team and Paper Jam were the last M&L games before the remakes (which underperformed).

It would be hilarious. Characters like Jynx and Mr. Popo really do show us how racist Japan can be.

There are far worse examples in Japanese media. Jynx at least is neutral (and she's purple nowadays anyway), and Mr. Popo is shown in a positive light.

Nintendo somehow keeps missing the point of what makes the original 2 games so great, which leads me to believe they were just flukes

I think the result of such the shift was:

1. Different staff and Director working on the games now.
2. Miyamoto decreeing that they focus on established characters instead of the more unique ones the first three games had.

Even though he always skips past the text in the games that he plays.

I always tell him that he needs to actually read what the characters in the games are saying since they often give hints, but he hasn't really taken that advice. If this continues if/when he does get BotW, then he's going to be in for a bad time.

20 to 30% of the country is out of a job and have been stuck at home for three straight months. I think years from now when people are doing a retrospective on everything that's happening, the impact that coronavirus has had on these protests will be a significant through line.

It's hard to go out and protest when you're working the closing shift and have to get up early the next morning.

Funnily enough, once upon a time, cable TV didn't have ads because having to pay for cable defeated the purpose.
