TopicPete Buttigieg's real 'black problem': He has been convicted of white privilege

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/12/10/buttigieg-deserves-benefit-of-doubt-black-problem-2020-column/2631049001/

Harriot's attack in The Root, an African American-oriented online magazine, was prompted by a 2011 interview in which Buttigieg said that "kids need to see evidence that education is going to work for them in order to be motivated to get a higher education. Because many kids in minority communities havent seen it work for people they know, Buttigieg said, its understandable that they are skeptical about the value of education. For this expression of empathy, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was labeled a baldfaced liar. Harriot was furious that Buttigieg did not name systemic racism as the reason for black kids depressed college enrollment. But Buttigiegs comment was not intended as a list of all reasons, only one. So when Harriot cited higher unemployment and lower income for black college graduates as two reasons black kids are less likely to go to college, it sounded an awful lot like Buttigieg saying black kids dont see college working for them in the same way white kids do. It made me think Harriots anger was about something else.

To be fair, Buttigieg had a black problem before Harriots article. By most accounts, the problem began when he demoted South Bends black police chief in 2012, shortly after he was elected Mayor Pete. There was also Buttigiegs statement at the Democratic presidential debate last month in which he said being gay helped him understand the struggles of the black community. Buttigiegs expression of camaraderie with another minority is a good thing, right? Nope. It drew anger from the black community, with many feeling a privileged white man should not be comparing his struggle to theirs. Recent efforts to paint Buttigieg as an undercover bigot prompted an uproar over a stock photo of a black woman and child that was used to promote Buttigiegs Douglass Plan, which is designed to dismantle racist structures and systems in the United States. The woman in the photo is from Kenya and was not aware her picture was going to promote the plan. The backlash was swift and strong. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who has endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont for the Democratic nomination, tweeted: This is not OK or necessary. In reality, Buttigieg has been convicted of white privilege. The phrase was originally intended to convey that white people in the United States have gained unfair advantages by virtue of being white. Thats indisputable. But the phrase has morphed into more than that.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sen-kamala-harris-questions-america-elect-woman-color/story?id=66610615

Harris, a woman who is both black and Indian American, wondered aloud if "America was ready for a woman and a woman of color to be president of the United States of America. It is an issue she has brought up on the campaign trail as well, questioning whether her race and gender might be a hindrance to her presidential bid amid the largest group of major contenders the Democratic party has ever seen -- a field that includes an openly gay mayor, a Hindu Pacific Islander congresswoman, an African American senator, a Latino former cabinet secretary, and an Asian American businessman.

Leah Wright Rigueur, an assistant professor of public policy at Harvards Kennedy School of Government, told ABC News that for most of the country ... gender is not a hindrance to people voting for a political candidate. On the other hand, she said, there are elements of sexism, or unique challenges that female candidates face, that male candidates do not. Nevertheless, Wright Rigueur noted that black women often do well when they run for office because they have the ability to unite disparate coalitions into alliances that end up propelling them into office. So you might call them unifiers -- they're very good at unifying various coalitions.

Kanye West says he believes that strip clubs are equivalent to sex trafficking. They got posters advertising sex trafficking because, if theres an advertisement for a strip club, that is advertising sex trafficking, West told the audience. At the end of the night, when they close up, the manager says, How much traffic do we have? West continued, So if its a man thats going through things with his family or going through things at work, and he feels he has to go there, we all end up participating or whether its the spirits that get advertised to us all the time. Alcohol, they call it a spirit.

He added that strip clubs are given more promotion than religion. So we get constant advertisement for spirits, we get constant advertisement for strip clubs and other things like that, but then we bring up the name of Jesus, were told to be quiet, he said, referencing his recent transition to gospel music. So even for someone whos professing Godthe devil is going to come and do everything he can to distract people from knowing how to fully be in service to the Lord.

53 percent of Republicans believe that Donald Trump is a better president than Abraham Lincoln, according to a new poll. The Economist and YouGov published results of its latest polling on U.S. politics this week. One poll gauged Trump's favorability versus Lincoln, who was the U.S. president between 1861 and 1865 and who steered America through the Civil War and abolished slavery. Asked "Which Republican president was better?", 53 percent of Republicans said Trump.

That is in stark contrast to respondents who identify as Democrats and independent. 94 percent of Democrats said Lincoln was the better president, as did 78 percent of independent voters.

Hunter Biden spent several thousand dollars at a Manhattan strip club during a pair of visits including one that sent a staffer scrambling to buy a sex toy so strippers could use it on him, sources told The Post on Wednesday. Biden whos been dogged by a series of strip-club allegations uncovered by The Post this week was accompanied by a woman both times he went to Larry Flynts Hustler Club NYC in Hells Kitchen about a year ago, the sources said. On each occasion, he and his companion holed up in a private room, where they ordered bottles of pricey booze and were joined by several strippers, sources said. During one particularly wild night, workers suspected Biden son of former Vice President Joe Biden, the frontrunner in the Democratic primary race to challenge President Donald Trump was high, and he was warned that drugs werent allowed on the premises, sources said. That same night, a worker had to be sent out to purchase a dildo so the gals could use it on Hunter, sources said. Its unclear if the club didnt have a similar device on hand or if he insisted on a brand-new one fresh out of the package.

Despite the lurid allegations, Hunter was described as an almost-ideal customer. He was a pretty nice guy, one source said. He was pretty friendly and a pretty good tipper.

If you're charging a low rate to entice students then the people you're likely targeting are those who already live in poverty, like the majority of the Indian population does, and that has limited access to the internet, which itself is already heavily censored. Doing research on scams that are being specifically marketed towards you is something people always have struggled with, and the more vulnerable you are the less likely you are to notice.

So the United States has the worlds highest rate of children in detention. Is this worth reporting? Maybe, maybe not. Nevertheless, Agence France-Presse, or AFP, and Reuters did report it, attributing the information to a United Nations study on migrant children detained at the US-Mexico border. Then the two agencies retracted the story. Deleted, withdrew, demolished. If they could have used one of those Men in Black memory-zappers on us, they would have. Sheepishly, the two news organizations explained that, you see, the UN data was from 2015 part of a border crackdown that had begun years earlier. We all know who the president was in 2015. It wasnt evil, child-caging monster President Trump. It was that nice, compassionate, child-caging monster President Barack Obama.

Zap. The story made Obama look bad. Hence the story was removed. Not updated or corrected, removed. I know its a heavy news environment. Who can keep up? But try to remember this one, because its instructive. People think news organizations flat-out fabricate stories. That isnt often the case. Fake news is a problem that pops up here and there, but the much more systematic and deeply entrenched attack on truth is the casual, everyday bias of reporters. AFP and Reuters deleted a story that was, in a narrow sense, true that a UN study claimed the United States had some 100,000 children in migrant-related detention. The United Nations is horribly biased against America and the West. Still, on the level of lazy, news-release-driven journalism, the locked-up-kids story was minimally valid. At any rate, what the agencies didnt seem to like was the storys changed implication: That Obama, rather than Trump, locked up a lot of children. This is whats important: Not that AFP and Reuters deleted a story, but that the implication of the story meant everything to them.

https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-bloomberg-black-votes-and-black-lives-20191118-bkendsg37ze5bdiaqxi4vnmmt4-story.html

Do black votes matter more than black lives? To Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, apparently they do. Bloomberg, a potential Democratic presidential candidate, has suddenly seen the light on the deep dark pit into which his policy of stop-and-frisk cast so many black and brown New Yorkers. At Christian Cultural Center, a storied black church in Brooklyn, the billionaire politician suddenly said, after two decades of saying it was right, that it was wrong." You see, Democrats dont win presidential primaries without us black and brown voters. But sorry, we dont throw our votes to those who discover us long after having stepped over our bodies. Lets be clear about what was happening to black and brown New Yorkers under Bloombergs police department. On April 15, 2011, Officer Michael Daragjati told a friend that he had fried another n____, by which he meant that he violated the rights of a 31-year-old black man for simply walking down the street at night. The John Doe had done nothing wrong, but because he complained about being stopped and thrown up against a squad car, they arrested him, trumped up the charges and held him in jail for two days, forcing him to plea to disorderly conduct or face weeks at the notorious Rikers Island jail since he couldnt afford bail.

Thanks to federal wiretaps, because Daragjati was a crooked cop, this incident turned into a rare but successful criminal prosecution of a racist, criminal police officer. There are far too many New Yorkers traumatized by and untrusting of police, whether they be women who have been sexually molested as part of the stop-and-frisk or young men who simply live in fear of matching the description because of the color of their skin. Stop-and-frisk was Bloombergs baby. Despite the fact that crime was falling in New York City and across the country as a whole, in the 1990s and early-2000s, his police commissioner, Ray Kelly, made it the cornerstone of his legacy. In 2011, Bloombergs police department stopped a record 700,000 people. By comparison, in 2015, 47,000 people were stopped while crime continued to decline. Bloomberg is now apologizing to black residents of East New York and other traumatized communities because he now suddenly sees what he could not over the last two decades, despite losing a landmark civil rights suit, despite year after year of violent crime rates dropping in the absence of the abusive practice. The sudden shift is a cynical ploy that we as black voters see all too often. Sorry, but no. A perfunctory apology wont stick. Like South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Bloomberg has to reckon with his record. To me, the phony apology stings even more because of where it happened; this was the church-home of Brooklyns first black District Attorney, Ken Thompson, who tragically passed away in 2016. In 2013, when Thompson was campaigning for our votes, he said Bloomberg was dead wrong on stop-and-frisk. Bloomberg wasnt listening.
