If opting out of a story that seems to be mostly his idea would really hurt him that much, you aren't really going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things by continuing to work on it. You should just be honest with him, in my own opinion.

I'm... I quit. He expected it. A few weeks ago, I was morbidly depressed. One of my counselors suggested I branch out and try smaller, non-guide projects. My CYOA is something I can do every day or so. The stress of this project was too much.

It's not going to be good for either of you if you keep working on something that your heart just isn't in, but you do have some choices. You can grit your teeth and keep at it, you can try to change his mind about some of the changes you're not liking, or you can opt out as gently as you possibly can.

I see welching as betrayal or something. It's like I'm obligated to spend weeks or months on this thing. ...I'm not really enjoying it at all. It's a freakin' chore.

At least my CYOA was streamlined. His thing is all over the place.

I had more fun getting murdered by scorpions in Fallout: New Vegas than writing his story.

You should tell him that it's his own story and that you think he should focus more on actually getting it written... you wouldn't have to give your own opinion on it ( which would help you potentially avoid hurting his feelings, and would keep you from needing to lie) and it could help you wash your hands of it in the process.

New Vegas can do that. There are pockets of really powerful enemies just chilling at various points. It probably wouldn't have helped much there because of the mountains, but it's a good habit to just hit the VATS button when you're out exploring. Any visible enemy, no matter how far, will be zoomed in on so you know what's coming. It can really save your life to see tough enemies before they see you so you can turn around.

I do that out of paranoia.

Yeah, that too, there aren't any fetch quests or anything. You're gonna be helping factions do s***, whether that's constructive or destructive depends on the faction.

Sort of. My point was that sidequests aren't like "go collect 15 bear asses". It's more "yo help me with this thanks" kinda deal. There's always usually some sort of actual story.

Sounds like the writers actually cared.

Quests can earn you reputation with factions, yeah. But really they're the main source of XP for your character. That's another reason to follow the main quest for a while, it's the best source of XP for you to gain some levels, which gives you perks, skill points, and XP.

There are other towns and adventures along the way, so don't feel like you have to walk the highway the whole time -- although you can, if you want. There are cool landmarks around you can get quests at.

That BotW-ish feeling is what I want in my open-world games. I just want to explore.
