(*bark*, *bark bark*, heke?)

[I wasn't sure what to make of this, so I kinda wanted to just start barking at the screen.]

I knew I'd regret using that Krusty vid so early. Not seeing any good "Heke?" reaction videos (Heke being the confused sound made by characters in Hamtaro & once by Kagome in the English dub of InuYasha as a bit of a voice actor joke, since the actress was also on Hamtaro) either... if there was ever a time for an exlamation of heke, it would probably be in response to this video.

...Oh well, barking works too, I suppose. Woof.

[Final Thoughts: The confusing nature of the song is actually pretty wonderful on a first impression, but once you're acclimated to how weird it seems, it doesn't completely hold up. An unfortunate casualty of the way this topic requires multiple listens.]

[Feels like a typical jpop song. Not bad.]

Good voice, nice video quality, I'm somewhat interested in hearing other songs and learning if there's any reason behind all the different AZKis (Red, Black, White). I just think the song is a bit too...standard to really stand out as much as I'd like.

On an unrelated note, I did try out a few different songs from the related videos, and I think I prefer Fake.Fake.Fake:

Though I find myself wishing the beat was less...happy and energetic. And of course since the video shows Aqua, I had to go look at one of her videos since she was cuter and that video was a duet with someone even cuter. Not going to try to track them down though as I don't want to know how deep this rabbit hole goes...I've already listened to two Azki Black songs, one Azki White song, one Aqua song, if I don't stop somewhere then I'll never be able to move onto the next song.

[Final Thoughts: Fake.Fake.Fake is pretty great, at least a 9. I don't think it would have won, but if it were the song nominated, I think it'd hit somewhere in the top 30 easily enough.

This song is nice; not as great as Fake, obviously, but it's nice and I can appreciate it directly leading me to the other song.

[Much better than expected from a Touhou remix.]

Likely because this doesn't sound like Touhou music to me at all. Seems like overly emotional final boss music from some RPG; we start with the sad music as the main character attempts to persuade the final antangonist to end things peacefully, remember their past, things don't have to end this way--blah blah blah.

Music intensifies as the actual battle starts. Alarm can work as whatever--the structure the final battle takes place in beginning to self-destruct as the final phase of the battle begins, some missile launch ("You're too late, generic main character! Even if you win, my plan can't be stopped!11!"), whatever.

And a final bit of SAD MUSIC after the antagonist's death so the protagonist can be all sad about the ending.

...Kinda generic, but it's not too bad of a fantasy sequence to imagine. Doesn't remind me of Touhou in the least though.

[POINTLESS TRIVIA: This song's original score was 6.1, making this the first song to break the 6 barrier...before I started inflating the values so that everything around here is a 6.7 anyway.]

[Kinda funny. Will likely go up my rankings in the future; its short and comical, so its something I could turn on once a month or so when I want to wax nostalgic for the variety of songs nominated here.]

I walk down city streets
On an unsuspecting human world
Inhuman in your midst

Well someone knows what type of subject matter I like. </.<

Not really into generic martians though, they don't tend to be fluffy or have long tails (seriously, what's the fun of being non-human if you don't have a tail to wag?). Why are there no songs about turning into a Kushiban?

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Kushiban

Never been something with color changing fur before... but I suppose that's a topic for a different write-up.

As an 80s song dealing with martians, this song does bring to mind Rapture by Blondie... kinda. Very different songs (I prefer this one over Rapture, if it matters), but still martian related.

Good song with dull lyrics sums it up.

[Final Thoughts: The stage is impressive (like the fire and the red lights), they have a good energy on stage, the surprise guest with rap interlude was nice, but the lyrics are rather bland.

"It's the festival! It's the festival! CRAZY SUMMER DANCE DANCE!"

We've covered my thoughts on average dance songs, yes? There are exceptions and let's not forget that this song did get a good placement all things considered, but I think I like the remaining songs more at the moment.]

[Oh god, this game. I got so close to the end and just couldnt bring myself to finish it.

The main character has amnesia. After a lot of waiting for an answer, you find someone who knows the main character (a dying old woman, if I recall) and he remembers everything... you then get a list of options to basically create your own past for him. Which would be neat, if your choices had any impact on anything. Choosing the most ridiculous options, my hero declared:

I was the son of an evil villain... gluttonous... and a real playa!

Completely straight-faced, she replied that she should have known from the way he acted. I laughed, but any sense of immersion was gone. Nothing mattered and if it didnt, then I saw no reason to bother finishing the game.

Songs not bad, decent lounge type song, but its not entirely my thing and doesnt excite me enough to get past my apathy for the characters.]

Of course, some days I'm better able to laugh at the game and the memories are charming in their own way... I like this song today, but don't be surprised if I'm back to disliking it tomorrow.

[Final Thoughts: No, I still find it charming tonight.]

(5.6, 6, 6.7)

[This should be my thing. Its funny, it has animals, I enjoy the movie... but Im not really into it tonight.]

My reaction hasn't changed much. I do like it and I love the idea (also this is the only princess song sung by a princess in this ranking, since that song that shall remain nameless was sung by a crab.

...actually I forgot about Anastasia, she counts as a princess, doesn't she? I'd say this is the only "Disney Princess" song, but Giselle doesn't count as a Disney Princess--I recall hearing rumors that they were going to promote her, but they'd have to pay Amy Adams to use her likeness and it's more profitable to pretend this film never happened? ...Or did I just imagine that as the reason they didn't make merchandise?

...Uh-oh, I think we've reached a point where the parenthetical statement is not only longer than the sentence it was attached to, but assuredly larger than the entire rest of the write-up, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that but I've come too far to go back and edit this to be less...stupid.)

love the idea, but the song never fully clicks for me. I'd blame it on the fact that I've seen the movie too many times, but there are songs I've heard more often than this one that got better placements, so that can't be it. I'd blame it on the rain, but I already burst into a totally unrelated song on a write-up to another one of your nominations (which was written before this one but hasn't come up yet as it was moved up the rankings and I probably shouldn't have told you that, but then you don't know which song I'm talking about and god, I'm doing it again with the parenthetical statements, I swear I'm not doing this intentionally), and I really don't want bursting into song during your nominations to become a running gag.

[Later Edit: I completely forgot about Moana earlier. Don't think I'd count her as a Disney Princess, but she's close. Close enough that the movie joked about it at any rate.

...actually she was in Wreck It Ralph 2's princess scene, wasn't she? Or maybe she wasn't, I don't actually recall specifics about it now.]

...Well I'm not not looking for something somber. I just don't have the energy or motivation to talk about...well anything in this song, quite frankly.

[Final Thoughts: ...This song's dropping immediately after "Kiss The Girl"? Really? That's...that's what we're doing tonight, is it?

alright then.]

====================

I plan on being busy tomorrow and Tuesday, so I may push the next ten songs later tonight--get the rest of the bottom half out of the way, then have a two day intermission before resuming.

...or such would be the plan, but I'm not entirely sure what actually drops next...having listened to all ten upcoming songs, I don't really want to cut any of them? Which...complicates matters...so I need to go listen to at least the ten songs after that and decide how some of this shakes out...

12: ...No, seriously, what the heck is going on during this scene from Eric's perspective? Like...he can actually hear all of this? Usually I assume we're operating with a standard "humans can't understand non-humans" rule, but apparently he hears what's going on just fine. So... he sees and hears this big musical number and has no particular reaction to it? Is this a thing that happens to him on a regular basis? Do...do fish routinely burst into song whenever he gets onto a boat?

13: If you don't like Cantonese dogs, then how about the Zulu dub of the Lion King?

Always interesting to hear characters from an American cartoon speaking a language from the countries those characters are supposed to be from instead of English. Also young Nala has one of the cutest voices ever and that is perfect casting and I love it. Also, I don't think any of the songs nominated at either of my topics use native African languages, so a bit more diversity wouldn't have hurt...

(I don't like Zulu Zazu's voice which would have hurt the score a bit, but that's going off-topic.)

14: *resumes glaring and swishing her tail* HALF-FISH.

15: Besides everything else I'm not fond of oceans or deep water in general*. Mild phobia, really. Not enough that it impacts my ability to watch and enjoy aquatic stories, but I can't really envision myself as any type of fish or aquatic creature. Deep water and I have an understanding; I don't get near it and it doesn't kill me. This is a fine arrangement and I'm happy with it, but really, the location this scene takes place in doesn't help your score any.

*I'm sure someone will point out that I gave Maclir first place last year in part because of it reminding me of a beach. Beaches are merely water adjacent. I have no problem being adjacent to large bodies of water. Also, I lived near a beach for a while, so I have some positive memories of said beach. I used to walk out to it in the middle of the night when I needed to be alone; it was so quiet and peaceful in the moonlight...I miss that beach.

Also, someone was playing fetch with their dog out at the water one day. That was neat. Beaches are relaxing places that sometimes have dogs and do not drown you. In conclusion, beaches=good.

16: The lyrics are too specific. I can't associate it with anything other than that specific scene in the movie.

17: Even if I wanted something romantic, "talking crab tries to convince random dude to force himself on some girl" is practically the exact opposite of romantic.

[LATER EDIT: Fine line between love and hate. I can't give a terrible rank to anything that inspires that much of a reaction, so it got a rather large boost in the end.]

[Final Thoughts: This isn't going to stand as the largest jump in placement, but I'm pretty sure that's the largest we've had to this point in the rankings?]

Name: Kiss the Girl

(1, 2, *glare*)

[Of all the Disney films you could have chosen...]

Who is ready for a write-up that's probably going to be longer than all previous write-ups combined?! WHOO! LET'S GET CRAZY!!!!!

1: Soo.,,you saw the list of all my assorted furry animal forms. And you decided to go with a Disney song...and out of everything you could have gone with, singing dogs & cats & lions & everything else, you chose the movie starring the half-fish.

2: HALF-FISH.

3: HALF-FISH. That is...that is, like, one of the worst half-human combinations possible. Actual fish may be low on my list of choices, but hey, it's something completely non-human so it can be fun for a new experience. Half-fish is like "we want a non-human character, but we're afraid the human audience won't be able to relate, so let's make the main character basically human anyway". It is the character design choice of a coward.

4: ...like, seriously, you know we could be listening to something fun like the Cantonese version of "Why Should I Worry?" right about now?

Balance the human Cantopop we've got with some furry Cantopop. We could have fun comparing this version to Billy Joel's! And, I cannot stress this enough, NO HALF-FISH.

5: And then you choose the song where she's human. Because of course you did.

6: *glare*

7: *angry tail swishing*

8: Seriously, why not "Part of Your World"? I may not relate to the longing to be human part, but wishing to be something you never will? It's the best song in the movie for a reason.

Also, we could have shared a lot of laughs! I don't remember who made it (might have been Raka? Or Princess Anri?) or when, but I recall someone on Board 8 did a MadLibs topic where the results went into the lyrics of Part of Your World. Someone gave "Cardboard Cutouts of Swamp Thing" as their response to [Plural Noun] and we had the song lyric "I've got cardboard cutouts of Swamp Thing aplenty".

That was great.

9: Before you bring it up, no, I don't award you any points for a singing crab. Crabs rank even lower than half-fish. It didn't help Crab Rave and it doesn't help you either.

10: ...Just so we're clear this song is about a crustacean trying to convince some dude he doesn't know to make out with a physically disabled half-fish in disguise, right? We're just...we're just okay with that being the premise?

11: And the humans can actually understand Sebastian? So...like, every fish and animal on the entire planet can speak English and be understood? Since he tells Eric what Ariel's name is, clearly, this has to be the case? I feel like that should be a bigger deal in universe than it is.

[This is a massive improvement over the original. Your plan of showing off the inferior versions before springing this beauty on me may actually pay off! Not with a first place finish, the few songs Ive awarded perfect 10s to are on another level, but this is pretty great.]

Significantly better than every other Trails song, but I am so completely bored by remixes of this song by this point that I can't appreciate it any longer. Try asking my thoughts on it in two months or so after I've recovered.

[Final Thoughts: Harsh, but repeatedly listening to versions of this song I found inferior did not help this song's ranking in the least. And I do feel a bit bad about that, but then, I'm not the one who nominated all the different versions of the same song to get it into this predicament in the first place. </.<

Also, I think this is the first time where the Initiatial Thoughts actually spoil part of the list. Since the songs were all listened to and commented on in the order they were posted, if you still had a list of the order songs were posted in, you could look over those nominated before NFUN's songs and know that a few of them had 10s for their Initial Ranking.

You could go even further, cross-reference the list against the songs that have already been eliminated, and narrow your search down to help figure out which songs were likely recipients of the 10s. Of course, why would you? As volatile as the rankings are, it's not like starting with a 10 meant a lot. It'd be a lot of work for absolutely no pay off.

...still, you hypothetically could, if you were...weird or something.

[LATER: "Initiatial"...don't care, I'm leaving that typo in.]]

[I like the lyrics and the story, not as sold on the song itself.]

This is a lot like the Shoujou Byou song; I think I slightly prefer Shoujou Byou's singer (even if she isn't my favorite singer), this had a translation available so I knew what was being said, and neither song has a definitive advantage over the other.

"The castle is engulfed in flames as the maddening voice echoes endlessly" is a fun line; I'm sure the translator took some liberties as direct translations are rarely so evocative, but either way, it's neat.

Unfortunately, I'm not as into the story now that I've had time to think about it. It may be because I'm joining at the last song of an album, but I have no idea who any of these characters are or why I should care what happens to them. The story is complete enough on its own, I guess, but I think it might have fared a bit better with the other songs to accompany it.

[Final Thoughts: I'm undecided on if I should have tried to find the rest of the album (and/or its sequel album) before ranking this or not.

On the one hand, that would be far more time and energy than I gave to any other song, and listening to other songs with the explicit goal of trying to give a higher score to a nomination seems cheating.

On the other, I can't deny that there are some nominations I loved so much that I've checked out related songs. But that was always a case of "I want more songs like this", not "I want more context to help this nomination"? At least, it feels like there's a difference between those two things. And if I did the latter, I'd have to go listen to all the Wired for Madness songs and other songs from other concept albums & what not.]

[Dunno. Like the spoken word opening and laughter, not sure on the actual song part.]

I wish I could find more information on this song and the band in general, as this seems exactly like the type of group I'd love. I'm into concept albums and songs performed by fictional characters, so an entire universe of interconnected songs and witches seems wonderful... but the story is complicated enough that any autotranslations kinda turn everything into gibberish. -.-'

Not that a song has to have a translation to get a good score (last year's winner didn't; I was so emotionally drawn into the song that it didn't matter what the words were), but when the story is one of the main selling points it's frustrating to not be able to understand anything. And judging based just on the quality of the song itself, I find that this isn't my favorite Japanese metal group--when I compare it to the raw power of lynch.'s vocals on Sorrow or the unexpected beauty Dir en Gray managed to put into Ranunculus, this...doesn't quite hold up favorably.

Seriously, I know it's in bad taste to directly compare this to a nomination from last year, but just try listening to SORROW:

It doesn't matter what the words are. Just listen to that voice; such beauty, such power, and that image of him standing on a bridge in the darkness... this video never fails to make me give a contented sigh and put me a in a relaxed, happy, tail wagging mood. I probably ranked that song too low last time...

Shoujou Byou, at least in this nominated track, aren't on that level. I can hear hints of something brilliant--spoken word sections are also one of my things and it helps illustrate that this isn't just a regular band, but I just don't connect with the music in any way other than "this sounds like a slightly above average j-metal band". With the added context of the story it might push them into greatness--or it might not, it's not like there aren't concept albums I dislike (for a popular reference, Pinball Wizard is better off without context), but I can't decipher enough to even make an educated guess either way.

[Final Thoughts: It probably doesn't help matters that I like the voice over that does the laughter in the intro more than I like the actual singer. Every time I turned this track on, during that intro, I feel I've made a grave mistake putting this so low--just listen to that voice and that laughter, with that instrumentation, this is great!!--then the actual singer comes in and I get a little disappointed that the part I love is over.]

[I was prepared to give a low score early on, but that may just be the best southern rock guitar Ive ever heard. Expect this to rise a bit higher on repeat listens.]

Ehh...it's good, but the lyrics are a bit rough. Outside of the chorus, all the lines are rather tame shots at songs that are far more popular and well-known than this one.

...Well mostly; pretty sure I've never even heard of the Elvin Bishop song that was referenced. I like the fact that Elvin's Wikipedia page mentions Gator Country--get into multiple music hall of fames [later edit: "halls of fame" is probably a better way of pluralizing that], perform for decades, and the internet still lists "was briefly referenced in one song by some other group" as one of your big accomplishments.

That's gotta sting, doesn't it? We're, what, 40 years after Gator Country was released and that line is still permanently attached to Elvin Bishop. That's just rough.

...Aaanywho, most of the song is just a list of other songs & artists that I could be listening to. I'm listening to "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin right now (I kinda felt obligated to listen to it after that tangent), and I'll go listen to Ramblin' Man after this.

I do kinda like that Gator Country manages to not be mean or anything. Like, it's very tame--too tame to really be a diss track--more...light teasing than anything else. It's kinda cute, actually (though I doubt 'cute' is what they were going for). Chorus is fun, though I'm not really into alligators, so you don't get any "non human bonus points" for it.

[Final Thoughts: Ehh...I guess "best southern rock guitar solo" is worth an extra .1 point.]

Not much to say about the song itself; I like it, the Game & Watch beeping/sound effects are kinda nifty, it's unique, blah blah blah yackity smackity.

Unrelated to anything, but YouTube's autoplay sent me to a pretty good song after this one ended: "Rolling Down The Street, In My Katamari"

I've already taken a break from writing this to listen to it twice. Dunno why, but somehow it's reminding me of OutRun? Like it's the perfect song for cruising down some very pixelated roads. Great beat, unique experience (don't think I've ever imagined myself in a 16-bit form before), definitely plan on checking out a few more songs by this artist later. Skimming the comments, it seems I'm not the only one who just recently found it by coincidence; while the song has been up for years, it only seems to be popping up into people's suggested videos now. Yay for the new algorithm!

Also, sorry about that not being related to your song, but it's a bit of a tradition at my ranking topics. At the Mega Man Topic, some song got derailed because an MMX series song I wanted to hear started playing; last topic, I believe it was Guile's Theme that was disrupted by me discovering VAPORWAVE, this time it's this song.

...assuming something like this doesn't happen again for the rest of the ranking anyway.

[Final Thoughts: I still can't find much to say about this song. It's good, better than any Game & Watch theme I can recall hearing (the Flat Zones in Ultimate are so vastly inferior to this song that they'd probably only get a 2), but it is so obviously a Mr. Game & Watch theme that it's yet another track I can't fantasize about or relate to. Good, down right fantastic for what it is, but not really what I'm looking for in an instrumental track.

On an unrelated note, I'm not connecting with "Rolling Down the Street, in My Katamari" like I was when I'd first heard it, pretty sure Flat Zone Infinity would have finished with a higher ranking than it. It's still nifty (I rather enjoy watching the notes scroll by), but not amazing or anything.

Also that obviously wasn't the only time a ranking got distracted by Autoplay; besides Ostinato, it happens in at least one other write-up.]

[The opening reminded me of the Mr. Saturn village, or more specifically some RPG that wants to be Earthbound and tries too hard to be goofy. Thankfully that phase was short-lived, but I felt it was more a demonstration of everything the artist could do than a real song. Heres me being goofy! Now heres some epic guitar! Now heres a creepy outro for a spooky song!. The variety could be the main draw for other people, but it kept my mind from wandering or identifying with any specific phase.]

I have nothing further to add to that write-up.

[Final Thoughts: Good, but perhaps it works better in context with the rest of the Wired for Madness songs?]

[Loud and confusing, I dont think I understood this one at all. It also ended too abruptly.]

I don't think I've seen lyrics as badly butchered as the only attempt I found of anyone transcribing this song:

https://genius.com/The-bombpops-brake-lights-lyrics

That is so completely wrong that I can scarcely believe they weren't trying to be wrong. How can you possibly take "My boss is up on my ass" and think you heard it as "By time this goes off my hatch"?

I think part of my problem is that I tried to read along with a lyric site the first time I heard this and it's so glaringly wrong that I couldn't make any sense of anything. Listening to the song itself, it seems to be a fairly standard "my job & boss suck" song, but at least I can follow it.

Short song, but it's nice to find one that actually does end once they run out of new material.

[I like the seagulls and the crashing waves, but I dont think it works for Finlay.]

Another pick that seems like a great pick (beach atmosphere, seagulls, wrestling related) that doesn't hit me as hard as I'd like it to.

I don't know a lot about Finlay, as he debuted and went through almost all of his career during a time I wasn't watching. I think I started in the 90s and stopped following at all around the point Cena debuted, then didn't come back until Bret Hart returned. I knew he obviously couldn't wrestle or do much, but for Bret to appear on WWE TV again was a really big deal, that it got me to come back for a few years.

Finlay...I think he was still an on-screen talent after I came back, but he never got to do much? Or maybe I'm thinking of old PPVs I saw on the Network... I know I saw him a couple times, but not often, and apparently didn't care enough to remember the details.

EITHER WAY, this song is way too soothing to be the entrance theme for someone whose entire personality is "likes fighting". To a point that I have no idea how this theme ever came about in the first place.

"We're debuting a new guy. His thing is that he likes fighting!"

"Got it! A song that gives the atmosphere of a relaxing night at the beach! That is the exact thing I picture when I think of people who like to fight."

And don't get me started on how "fighting" is not a personality trait for a wrestler. Everyone in the company fights for a living. They all love to fight.

...No, seriously, who created this character concept? Have they worked in any other media? Just imagine all the exciting possibilities of "guy whose entire personality is his job!".

"I'm a bartender and I love to serve drinks!"

"I'm a doctor and I love doctoring!"

Etc, etc.

It is a good song, but I'm still a bit burnt out on this entire style.

[Final Thoughts: Tonight this song is also reminding me of Crystal Labyrinth; this raises the question of what VGM doesn't remind me of Gradius, as that's apparently becoming a running theme in my mind.

[This song came in last place at the first ranking topic, which makes this song a bit of a running gag. The nostalgia for the first topic, the general familiarity, the comedy of this song returning by coincidence, it all combines to make this far more tolerable than I originally found it.

...Unfortunately, I still dont usually like classical or symphonic music, and asking me to sit through 11 minutes of a style I dont care for is a bit much. As much as my opinion on it has improved, its going to struggle to escape the bottom 10% on repeat listens. Here, on the first impression, I can genuinely thank you for the memories and a chance to reconsider my views. After the novelty has worn off? Well see.]

Well I didn't expect the song to get as high up the list as it did, but here we are. Not really my thing, but it's a nice palate cleanser between songs. Take ten minutes or so to relax with a mild song that doesn't inspire anything beyond fond memories of the last topic.

[Final Notes: Sometimes, it's nice to just relax with something quiet and remember the good times. Even if that's not remotely what the song is about or something you'd normally like.

I suppose giving a high score based primarily on memories isn't being objective, but at no point in either of my topics did I imply I was going to be objective. Good memories=good score.]

[I have a low tolerance for repeated lyrics. This is just too repetitive to ever listen to voluntarily.]

Well, there's enough of a dark edge to the song that I'm occasionally in the mood for it. Not often, but it's a lot better than my first impression made it out to be.

[Final Thoughts: Another very mixed reaction song. It's got a really long intro (three minutes before the first vocalizations, longer before he actually says words) and seems to want to be a dance song in places (there's often a thumping backbeat, though it's obviously not in the top 10 most thumping or it would not be anywhere near this high on the list), but there's just enough of a dark twist to everything that I sorta like it?

...And yes, I know, "sorta like it" seems like something that should have been cut earlier. I like how conflicted about everything the song makes me, as little sense as that is likely to make--in that way, it's vaguely similar to "Purple Streets"; I never really know what to make of any one aspect of the songs, which I find appealing enough to give a "notably average score" to.

...I think.]

[Cute.]

Though not cute enough. The line about "Even if a long-haired ghost who came out of the TV was in love with you..." brings to mind Erma, the most adorable character in history. It's a webcomic that basically asks the question "what if the girl from The Ring married a human and they had the most adorable daughter??" and it is, basically, the greatest comic of all time.

...at least the parts of it I've read. I haven't had much time to read lately, so I'm way behind on it*... but I highly recommend the ones I had a chance to read. It starts off with random one-shot comics, but starts doing story arcs after a while... well, probably not the type of thing anyone here would be interested in, but I loved it.

Of course this particular song is about stopping the girl from The Ring from finding love, so the singer is technically stopping Erma from being born, and therefore I hate her. </.<

Kidding. I think.

[Final Note: *Actually the comic had been going on for years before I heard about it on Reddit and I never got through the backlog, so saying I'm "way behind" sounds a bit misleading. I haven't fallen behind, so much as I never had the time to catch up in the first place.]

[Good, but uninspiring.]

First, that title always makes me think of Bret Hart's "Never Been a Right Time to Say Goodbye":

Obviously these songs aren't related in the least. There's no way I can connect "pro wrestler gives a spoken word song about a dying relationship" to "Beyonce does her best Diana Ross impersonation", outside of the 'these songs both have "Goodbye" in the title' angle. But that's still where my mind goes, every single time I've seen this song, from the point you nominated it until this write-up.

The song I'm supposed to be ranking is good, though I think I'd prefer to just listen to Diana Ross or Motown music in general rather than this soundtrack that's just heavily inspired by them. I just don't think even Beyonce compares to Diana Ross, at least in this specific genre of music.

[Final Thoughts: Actually, thinking about it a bit more, I'm not sure there are any Diana Ross songs (solo or with The Supremes) that I truly love. Perhaps I should have chosen Dionne Warwick as my example? Not as direct a comparison to Beyonce's character as Diana Ross, but similar and I can at least point to "Walk On By" as a personal favorite.]

I dunno. At first I thought I wanted to move this down, but after going and relistening to some recently eliminated songs, this one definitely beats them in head-to-head competition. So, I like it. I just can't find anything to say about it or bring myself to give it a definitive score.

[Final Thoughts: I still have no read on this song. It's not really weird or anything, but it's not exactly normal either... Another unexpected tie, but I couldn't bring myself to put this or Purple Streets over the other. Albert's gotten itself stuck in my head more times than I could count and it's more obviously my sort of thing, but Purple is always just different enough that I never quite know what to make of it. Ultimately, I find I don't think I actually prefer either of them to the other.

[Final Thoughts: I've caught myself muttering the chorus of this song to myself on multiple occasions, so it's definitely catchier than I had assumed at first. It still feels a little odd to assign any point value to the nomination, but given it's respectable placement and that I never minded it getting stuck in my head, I think I can officially call it "notably above average". Still not my favorite cartoon theme, not by a longshot, but much much better than I first thought.]

Still not a big fan of the Yakuza series or its soundtrack in general, but I like this. ...Primarily because it feels like a Cowboy Bebop track and I picture Spike instead of Kiryu, but whatever.

[Final Thoughts: Thankfully, a lot of people in the comments agree that this is similar to Cowboy Bebop, so I can be sure that it's not entirely in my head for once.

I know this is a boss fight song (at least, it's too...dramatic for a normal fight song, I should think), but I think it feels a bit too aggressive? Which...doesn't make much sense as a complaint, to be quite honest, nor do I truly know how I'd prefer the song to go. I planned on saying that I'd prefer more of a "smooth jazz" sound, but the (incredibly brief) research I've done into that tends to be a bit too relaxing... like there should be a middleground between smooth jazz's 'quiet background music that you won't really notice' and this song's 'manly death battle'-ness?

...Also all this talk about jazz has caused me to put Carol King's Jazzman on an endless loop while typing this. (I imagine most people here, like me, first heard the song on The Simpsons. Lisa's version isn't bad, though I prefer Carol's voice to Lisa's. Though I fear, even by my standards, this has gone wildly off track).]

It's still good, but once the novelty of finding another TJ Davis racing love song after two decades wears off, it's not the best. That outro repeating the chorus endlessly is a bit too reptitive and she comes off a bit too desperate. Like, it does matter what he did to you, girl; if he broke your heart, you don't have to jump all over him the second he comes back. You can do better!

An interesting note - in the stage version of West Side Story, Office Krupke is in Act II, which means Riff (who leads the song in the film) is already dead, so a supporting character, Action, sings it instead.

Yeah, I read a little bit about that. Honestly, I'm not sure why the song was in the second act to begin with, as the emotional whiplash from switching from death to a comedic song seems like it'd be a bit much; though I say that as someone who has only vague, second-hand knowledge of it.

Not in a psychic powers mood right now, I still want one more verse, and I'm mildly irked by the abruptness of the ending--though it is a good song and I usually enjoy it more than that. It was a very solid pick either way.

I haven't played Psi-Ops since it was new, so my memories are too vague to really get into. I'm rather mesmerized by this track. I've listened to it about five times in a row now and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. It's like I can't look away from it for some reason that I can't place...

...back on topic, Ostinato doesn't have that effect on me. It's good and what not, but all it does is trigger Earthbound flashbacks, and I was never a big fan of that series. It was abnormal enough that it made me want to try something else by Sungazer (I hadn't intended to go with Bird on the Wing or to listen to it so quickly, but I intended to listen to something eventually), but the memories it inspires are...well, dull, to be quite frank. "Remember the final boss of that game you never liked? Whee!"

[Hey, its this guy again! Another running gag--I like cartoon songs and villain songs, but the closest I get to such a nomination are covers by Jonathan Young. Unlike his rendition of Hellfire from last topic, this is an improvement over the original.]

Well there actually were some cartoon songs nominated eventually this time, but this remained the closest to an Animated Villain song*. This is Jonathan Blow at his finest (I did check out a few of his other songs after the last topic ended) and a tremendous improvement over the original, making it darker and more impressive.

...Unfortunately, I'm just not feeling this song tonight for some reason.

[Final Thoughts: *Not sure I'd personally count it as it's a medley of all the songs, but Moana Medley contains part of a cartoon villain song. So that's another villain song, if you want to include it, even though that's just one small part of the entire track.

Anyway... this song did get a decent jump from where I was originally going to eliminate it. I don't have my notes for where it used to be, but this was one of the five songs that was rising through the ranks (the two Trails of Songs I had underranked, Disco, this song, and one more that hasn't dropped just yet). CONS: That one line makes me want to throw the song in the trash. Probably going to end up at a 6, though I could see myself moving it significantly in either direction. It shall depend entirely on how I feel that day.]

This, perhaps ironically, turned out to be one of the most consistent songs on the list, as I always have the same reaction to it. I love how unique the sound is. As someone on YouTube jokingly put it:

"Hip-hop, heavy metal, reggae, pop, dubstep, and even some symphonic elements. It's... it's... Heavy-hip reggal popstep."

The chorus is instantly memorable and stuck in my head and it's generally a very well made song. I just have a very low tolerance for lyrics that come off homophobic and as soon as we got to that line about salt boy, this song...

And before you attack me for overreacting, I have nothing against the singer personally. Actually, he seems like a really cool dude--I love that there's an interview where he declares that he has no guilty pleasures because he's not ashamed of anything and that he could go to a gym wearing a Downton Abbey shirt if he wanted, because he doesn't care what anyone thinks. He's just so comfortable with himself and comes off so cool that I'm a little envious. I might even try looking into some of their other songs eventually because I'm not going to condemn them over one line of one song.

...but I'm also not going to give an outstanding score to the song with a line like that either.

I can't find any non-stupid ways to phrase any of this, so again, my full apologies.

ONE

My first reaction to having to come up with a write-up for the song is paranoia. I'm concerned about all the ways it can go wrong; if the final placement is too low, then I'm concerned that I'll look like a prude or someone who is unable to enjoy anything dealing with serious subject matters.

[I'll note that you're also not accusing me of giving the song too high of a placement out of that fear, in spite of that being listed as an equal concern.]

On the other hand, I don't want to have to deal with liking the song either. It's hard to justify liking a song about school shootings without also having to explain that you don't like the fact that it's about the shootings, and then it's all...ugh. "Yes, I like the song; No, I don't like that part of the song; Yes, I like villain songs, but preferably more cartoon-y than this; Yes, I know they're not glorifying mass shootings, I am capable of separating the fact that creating a work of art dealing with crime does not mean endorsing that crime, thank you."

Then you get into the fact that I was on a board with an (attempted) mass shooter for years and that she'd probably enjoy this song what with her obsession with slaughtering children for fun and the general discomfort associated with that, and...uggghhhhhh....

That was barely relevant to the song. That was about how much everything about the write-up was going to completely suck and that I didn't want to do it.

...Basically you could, and should, interpret my initial thoughts as "I like this song, but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE how the conversations about this are going to go, and they are an inevitability no matter where this ultimately places on the list". It was meant to be a self-deprecating joke about my worries and paranoia, not a serious commentary on...anything.

Did I word it well? No. I'll even accept full responsibility for this going in the direction I knew it would--self-fulfilling prophecies and what not.

2:

By the actual write-up, I've basically gotten over everything. Song's good, but not great. It's overused, I don't like the fact that I know it so well that I never needed to even click the song link to decide how I felt about the song, I don't like the fact that the media seems to portray it as a generic dance song (or possibly even a happy celebration song at times), I don't like the subject matter, but it's catchy and I do like it.

3:

Snake (and Bane, but I wouldn't see his post until after I'd made mine) tries to offer assurances that no one would think anything about me liking the song.

4:

I try to justify my paranoia about the write-up (again, let me stress we're only talking about the write-up and the inevitable responses to it, not the song itself) by pointing out that I (kinda) knew a (attempted) mass shooter and don't like having to take all the requisite steps to distance myself from her in what was supposed to be a fun topic.

Again, not having to do with the song--only the initial thoughts and why I dreaded how the write-up was going to go.

5:

You, somewhat justifiably, assume parts 1 & 4 had an impact on placement; they didn't. 1 was a bit of a joke about how horrible the conversation we're having right now was going to be (which, due to terrible wording, did not come off as the least bit funny--or even seeming like it was meant to be a joke, I'll concede); 4 was...stupid in every possible meaning of that word.

Who said anything about removing points from it? Again, the score actively increased (final placement went down slightly, but that was a side-effect of so many other songs being moved up and had absolutely nothing to do with the song itself).

I'll apologize for phrasing things incredibly poorly, but I assure you, that had no effect on the placement. At least, not on any conscious or intentional level.

Funny that I initially considered nominating another song by Dechinghis Khan

Not entirely sure what to make of the song. A German band, dressed as Mongolians, singing about Russia is certainly...unique, but I was so unprepared for it that it kinda fried my brain slightly.

Nominator: DireKrow (10/15)

(6.5, 6.5, 6.5)

[It's a good song, but not bringing anything to mind.]

I still don't think of anything when hearing this song. It's an above average piece of VGM to be sure, but I don't feel anything from it nor does it remind me of anything.

Game seems slightly interesting? I don't usually bother with roguelikes, computer RPGs, or RPGs as retro as this one, but it seems like it might be interesting anyway.

[Final Thoughts: Another song that I really want to love, as I can recognize it as great, but I still don't really connect with--no matter how many times I try.]

(6, 5, 6.5)

[Again, a bit more explicit than Id like, but I need to listen to more variety in music and this is a good opportunity to try understanding something different. A good nomination and experience, even if Im not thrilled with the song itself. (Extra point for the Shawn Michaels reference though).]

Honestly can't think of anything I'd like to add to that.

[Final Thoughts: I find it slightly amusing that Genius can't decide if Vince is being serious or not with this song:

Theres been much speculation as to whether this song is an extended metaphor of the hood life, a mockery of fake rappers that portray that image, or Vince just being Vince.

Makes me a feel a bit better if even his fans can't tell if this song is being serious or not.

Kinda wish I'd gotten around to playing MK11 before this topic. Apparently this song plays in one of the cooler cutscenes? That would be neat and offer some other topics to discuss, but I'm waiting to see if there's an almost inevitable Komplete Edition with the other characters included before I get into the game.

...also I suppose I didn't discuss Black Panther last topic even with a nomination from that film's soundtrack, so perhaps I don't often get into discussing other media the songs have appeared in and wouldn't have brought it up anyway?

......Errr, it was last topic that had the rap song from the Black Panther soundtrack, right? I don't think it was one of the songs yet to come from this topic... and looking at the list of songs on the soundtrack album, I don't recognize any of the names, which is leaving me to question if the song ever existed in the first place.

Congratulations! This is the first nomination this topic to have everything completely erased!

The Good

The lead actor's performance, complete with flips, is very impressive. Especially since I'm told it was quite painful jumping onto concrete repeatedly for stunts like these. He really hurt himself, right? At least, I seem to recall having read that.

Good choregraphy, with a lot of background details that are unlikely to be noticed the first time.

Vocals aren't the best I've heard, but they're good for a comedy song.

Choosing the comedy song is usually the safest option when picking something for me.

The Less Good

The jokes are hit-and-miss. The ones that land are pretty great, but I could personally live without the entire psychologist bit.

While doing research I learned there was an Animaniacs parody of West Side Story and tried watching it, so I might find something amusing to discuss for this write-up; that was a pointless waste of time and while I can't blame you, I kinda want to blame you anyway.

Nominator: paulg (9/15)

[Amusing.]

It's funny, incredibly 70s, and features a chorus so simple that you could sing along with it without even knowing what language is being spoken. I just don't know that "disco pop song about Genghis Khan" is funny enough to listen to on a regular basis; it was hilarious at first, but the novelty is already wearing a bit thin.

[Final Thoughts: Not much to add. High quality novelty song, but most novelty songs don't hold up to repeated listens like this topic demanded. Definitely would have done much better judged only a first impression.]

not saying you have to like pumped up kicks but your reasoning for not liking it is kinda weird imho.

I agree, but I wouldn't say I disliked it: if 5 is intended to be average, then 6 is good--just not great. Don't forget that False Memory Archive was only a few places above it and I had a lot of praise for that (still love the singer's voice).

If you want a song I actively disliked due to subject matter, you need only look back to Teacher, Teacher from the start of the topic. It's certainly not glorifying religious schools and beating students, but there are days where I just do not want to deal with the memories or subject matter. It's a fine song, but it's held back because I don't think I'll ever voluntarily listen to it (at one point dropping to a less than 0 score because I just couldn't stand to deal with it that day).

Pumped Up Kicks meanwhile never had a score that was any less than "above average", eventually ending an entire step above the average score. It's rare for songs with that sort of topic to get that far; it's also rare for songs I find omnipresent to get incredibly high scores (see: NBIceman's first eliminated song last topic being one cut for being something I already loved too much; Highway Jones being cut in part because it feels too much like the stuff I already listen to in spite of being new). That the song has so much going against it and still got "notably above average" score says a lot about it and the general quality.

Finally got around to trying to look up songs by Shiori Ueno. Unfortunately, I couldn't find much--my brief search only led to three games: Trouble Outsiders (which I'm reasonably aware of since that's what started this conversation) a Slayers game, and "His Name is Diamond". The few songs I tried were alright--still like the PC-98's sound--but nothing great enough that it'd be worth posting.

Not that he might not have some other great songs out there, but if they exist, they're a bit harder to find than anticipated.

How could you fail to notice Beast Breeders and Cattle Mutilation?!

I wasn't having any luck on Google or YouTube--after those three games it would always switch to just giving results for any VGM, regardless of composer.

Got any links?

http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/?system=PC-98&order=ppl&page=46 (you need something like Hoot to play them though)

Thank you, I'll try to work something out to look at them tomorrow evening.

I'm probably going to throw off my rankings by changing the numbers, but I feel there's a notable jump in quality starting at this point. So I'm jumping the scores of these two songs (and the songs to still come after this that only had 6 points) up to 6.5

...That may confuse things when I hit songs that I had given 6.5s to in the future, but we'll deal with that when we get to that point.

[One of several songs I have no reaction to at all, Im afraid.]

I want to love this. It has one of the best song titles in history, I really like the singer's voice--he reminds me of a young Gordon Lightfoot for some reason:

You know that ghost is me.
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see.

Great line, even if I can't find a logical reason to bring it up. I'm probably the only one who inexplicably finds a connection between the singers' voices anyway.

Aaanywho, this guy has a great voice. Good band. I just never seem to connect with any of the lyrics--I'm trying, I just listened to this five times in a row practically begging the song to give me SOMETHING I can use to justify giving this a very high score too, but I still have no emotional connection to it. Which is unfortunate because I really, really want to love this--it's a modern progressive rock band fronted by someone that could be Gordon Lightfoot's successor if he wanted to be, singing a song with an amazing title!!--but...no.

[These stomping grounds in this magic land are soon to leave us if you know what I mean.

...I dont.]

This song is bothering me because it's reminding me so much of a different song, but I can't recall enough of the other song to find it. It's that guitar sequence that starts five seconds in and repeats throughout almost the entire song; I swear there's a different song with a female singer going "ahh" for those exact notes (ah ah ah, ah-ah-ah ah-ah-ah) but my searches aren't getting anywhere. Turns out there are a lot of songs with "ah" in them and none of the ones anyone talks about follow that note sequence.

Song is fine, feels more 70s than 80s to me, like this song would have felt retro even when it was new, which is fine. I just can't focus on it right now.

[Final Thoughts: I'm still bothered by the fact that I can't tell if the song I can hear in my head actually exists or not.

Good song though! I do like it, though I never fully connect with it. I decided to have it tie with False Memory Archive at the literal last possible moment here because I find my thoughts on the songs to be awfully similar; good songs, good singer, somehow both familiar and new at the same time, but...not something I'm in love with, as much as I want to be.]

True, but I imagine you could find people who love the song because they enjoy imagining themselves as the shooter... also, it wasn't that long ago that one RI'er was arrested for attempting a mass shooting and she was obsessed with the Columbine shootings. I may not have interacted with her often, but I was on the same board as her for years... and once you realize how many people worship these shooters and that people like that are all around you, it makes songs like that incredibly awkward to listen to.

Still not entirely sure what kind of response you were hoping to get out of this one; song is catchy enough that it gets stuck in my head on a regular basis (something I'm honestly not too happy about) and the song was everywhere for so long that I'm sure everyone has heard it enough times to have made up their minds on if they like it. I can't possibly have anything new to add to a song this well known.

...Also, I can't recall what show it was (I think The Voice, but it could have been American Idol or America's Got Talent, or possibly even all of the above) but the production team played this song to celebrate someone moving through to the next round. It was like "CONGRATULATIONS!" and then this started playing in the background. It was creepy.

...Like if a studio selects a song about school shootings as your victory theme, I think you should be allowed to sue them.

...okay, that was needlessly cruel, but I dislike this singer and dont know enough about V (or DMC in general after the second game) to get anything out of the lyrics.]

Ehh... not the most impressive or objectively good song on the list, but it is loud and angry and something I want to listen to right now.

[Final Thoughts: I wish I had a better justification for putting this song so high on the list besides "it is loud and angry without being vulgar", but it is what it is.

I think this is one of the songs that most improved between my first and final listens. I kinda hated this at first, mellowed to a general "not my thing" stance at the second, and up to actually liking it by the third.]

It's better than I originally thought and I rather like how comically dark the first line seems to translate as:

Whether youre clean or dirty, if we peel your skin off its still the same

I also think I like the general energy of the song, but then you have idiocy like "give me give me give me hey joy!" and the general repetitiveness that doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from random j-metal songs... it's just kinda mid-tier-ish.

[Its fun and a decent introduction, but by necessity, it ends before anything actually happens. It does make me interested in hearing a song from later in the show, which is all a prologue needs to accomplish, but I dont know that it works well entirely on its own like this.]

That's basically it. The sixties inspired music quickly tells you when the show is set and the tone of the lyrics immediately sets the genre at "comedy horror", but nothing actually happens during the song itself. I know you can't kill anyone or do anything during a prologue, but it keeps the song from standing on its own merits.

It's probably just because the description mentioned Adventure Time, but now I can only associate this song with BMO. I imagine a BMO episode that ends with Finn saying, "Wow, sometimes, you're really cool, BMO."

BMO throws on a pair of shades and says "BMO knows this.". Then we get a special credits sequence, as BMO dances across the land to this song, giving fingergun motions to everyone he meets.

Soul Nomad was great. It wasn't perfect (nothing by NIS is), but I've played through it multiple times and always enjoyed it. This actually makes me want to go through it again, it has been a couple years...

...though I don't think a certain character's plot twist will ever make sense, no matter how many times I play it.

Song is better than I recalled. I really wasn't a fan after the second listen, but (like so many songs) it really didn't deserve the abysmal score I was giving it.

[Final Thoughts: This song got a minor upgrade in placement, though I don't have any notes on this phone about how many.

The harder rock sound lets this track stand out from the other VGM and I almost regret this elimination, but I think there's a notable jump in song quality coming up and the last cut of the night is going to be particularly painful.]

I suppose "sad disco" isn't actually that normal? Or is it? I've never questioned how many sad dance songs would play at a roller disco...

Kupo, kupo, kupo, kuppo, kuupo, kupo, kuopo~po.

Wish the entire song was more like the intro though. That was great. Rest of the song is...probably the only song I've heard in the sad disco genre, so I have nothing to compare it to.

[Final Notes: I still haven't entirely decided how I feel about it. Sad Roller Disco is an interesting concept and the distorted opening is fantastic, but I never fully connect with the song. It's like I both want it higher than this, but also almost wanted to move it further down. It's confusing]

Nice lol. If it weren't for that song I might've done really well. But I didn't regret it, 10 songs is a lot and I wanted some variety.

Nothing to regret. As I said, "I like what I don't like". It would be quite a dull topic without anything outside my comfort zone and I've been known to actively listen to things I dislike at times. I haven't done it in years, but I used to burn entire discs of songs I wasn't fond of & try to run them in Vib-Ribbon's marathon mode (whatever it was called). Don't think I ever managed to clear an entire CD, though it was always an interesting challenge.

For what it's worth, Candyman is the perfect song for something like that. Short enough that its level wouldn't be tedious and the changes in tempo would probably suit a rhythm game quite well, be somewhat interesting to see how a game created a level based on it. To that end, I'd say Candman is the equivalent of "My Humps"--God, I hate that song, but I've probably listened to it a dozen times or so... to try to see what I'm missing in it (no clue), to develop an appreciation for something different (still hate it), or to see how various games work with it (in no ways worth remembering).

...This sounded more inspirational or reassuring in my head before I started typing it.

[Different and good, but the second verse kinda turned me against the song.]

After someone pointed out that the second verse uses a lot of Fresh Prince episode titles for its lyrics, it got a pretty large boost for the novelty and because it was so unexpected it made me laugh; I've kinda cooled on the song a bit, though I still enjoy it more than I did the first time I heard it.

[Final Thoughts: It is novel and interesting enough that I may regret this elimination later on.]

Nominator: NFUN (2/15)

[I missed this song the first time. With so many songs with the same name, I was bound to just scroll past one without noticing it eventually. I suppose that means Im at 301 nominations? Oh well.

Song is alright, I suppose? Not something I'm looking for now.]

Feels like waiting room music, created to be as generic and non-threatening as possible as you sit and wait for whatever.

Could also see it as part of a multiplayer game's waiting room, like the little training you can do in Smash Bros. while waiting for a match to start.

...Also it kind of reminds me of Burger King. I don't know if every store has started it, but at least one local store plays quiet, instrumental versions of pop songs for background noise & this feels like their type of arrangement. This song is all the fun of sitting in a rundown Burger King waiting for food, only without the food. 0/10 would not eat at NFUN's House of Falcom again.

[Also goes without repeating, but obviously there are just 300 songs. I had handsomeboy's Tat Ming Pair song about driving on my list twice. Things have since been fixed.]

[Final Thoughts: Another song that was moved up. This one started at 268th Place, almost tied with "Blue Destination".

I find myself enjoying the chill vibe this song has going for it, though apparently not as much as I did on the second listen--this song moved up over 60 spaces from where I planned on eliminating it and still didn't come close to its placement on the Beta List.]

====================

Red Plasman & Green NFUN need food badly!

...I dunno why a Gauntlet reference for the near elimination update today, nor why those colors. Plasman is obviously red and NFUN is obviously Green--a capital Green at that, as it feels really weird if I try to force myself to type it in lowercase.

And that elimination gets us out of the bottom 100. It would be a good place for an update, but I didn't bother preparing one. </.<

[It has its ups and downs.]

It definitely does things I like by using some unusual sounds to create the music, but I don't like the section with the laughter (I'm sure it wants to be creepy, and may even be so in context, but here it's just mildly annoying) and the song never seems to take things as far as it could.

[Final Thoughts: It's unique enough that I can't believe I thought of giving it less than a 6, but like I said, it never pushes things to their limit.]

#203 [#276]:

Name: Blue Destination
Source: Sen no Kiseki II

Nominator: NFUN (3/15)

(1, 1, 3 [upgraded to a 6 after the ranking had started])

[Bored now.]

First off, this song title always makes me think of "Crystal Blue Persuasion":

I actually really like that song. It doesn't seem like my thing, but like last topic's song from Jesus Christ Superstar, it fits as a Christian Rock song that I get into. The fact that the lyrics were vague enough a lot of people thought it was about drugs and it's more a call for unity & brotherhood than making too many religious references probably helped.

I think I like that song better without the music video. Video is too disjointed and borderline seizure enducing. Too much pulsating and flashing; I mean, I get what they were going for, but I just don't think it really helps the song at all or manages to be interesting enough to hold up on its own merits.

That all has nothing to do with the song I'm supposed to be writing about, but I really don't have anything to say about it.

[Final Notes: Another of the songs to be moved up at the last minute. This one started at 269th Place.

This song was the most unfairly hit by the tedium of all these similar songs hitting in a row, as I couldn't even find the energy to pretend I wasn't bored on the first pass through--or the second for that matter. It's only now with a bit of distance from its counterparts that I can have any appreciation for the song--and it's actually pretty neat. It was the first song to be moved up the list, since as soon as I played it to try to find any Final Thoughts here, I knew there was no way I could justify eliminating it then.

Unfortunately, an additional 66 spaces are all I really feel like giving it. It's a significant increase, but just barely not enough to escape the bottom 100.]

[I expected better lyrics for this song.]

The only translation I can find has a good line in the second verse:

Even if surely cant come true
Ill prefer to erase everything

A song from the perspective of an omnicidal villain that's going to delete existence itself would be nice. The rest of the song doesn't live up to that and I don't think the singer or band could deliver on such a song even if they wanted to, but the images that verse conjure up make the song worthy of at least a slightly above average score.

[The comments are right, this does feel a lot like "Get Down on It", to a point that this feels very familiar even though I've never heard it before. It's not bad, but not great either.]

Of course I had to use rave.dj to combine the two songs:

https://rave.dj/EZkHq1rb3M9GNg

It actually kinda works. At times. Occasionally.

Anyway, this does just feel like a synthesizer remix of a song I've heard a thousand times, which is kinda interesting? But not quite interesting enough, I suppose. The song is trapped in an odd "too new for a nostalgia boost, too familiar to count as a new experience" void.

[Final Thoughts: This is one of the first songs that was moved up the list after the topic started. It was in 248th Place, but that was obviously way too low and the song held on for quite a way before dropping.

While I do enjoy this song and the fact that it feels like a very computerized take on a 70s classic, for the first time ever, I think I prefer my rave.dj mash-up over either of the actual songs used on it. The trippy video and addition of lyrics improve on Disco, whereas the computerization improves "Get Down on It". I'm not going to say the resulting combination is perfect or anything, but it's something I've gone back to listen to for fun a few times already--more than can be said about any of my other attempts to mess with that site.]

[A significant improvement over the original, though still not amazing.]

I'm not entirely sure what happened on that second listen, but I apparently really didn't want to hear this at all at the time. Thankfully, second impressions don't count for anything and I'm back to kinda liking it? I still don't think it manages to be more than a fairly standard anime song, but "average anime song" is still decent.

[LATER EDIT: Well average anime songs that don't give me a headache are still decent at any rate...]

[I won't.]

...So the first version of me hated the original but liked the remix; the second felt the exact opposite; and I have no idea what they're talking about as I find no appreciable difference in quality between the two at all.

......this scenario is so stupid, I'm just going to move on to the next song without wasting any further time dwelling on it.

====================

I'm back to prefering the remix, but the difference isn't drastic enough for me to move it up any.

[I dont think it needed to be ten minutes long. Not bad, just long for the sake of being long.]

Again nothing wrong with long songs, but this never feels like it does enough to justify the length. "Lady Fantasy" had the song divided into three distinct sections and while I wasn't enamored with it, I could at least admit that it needed the length for what it was going for. This song starts off strong, but never manages to move beyond "good".

[Final Thought: Does that opening remind anyone else of Inspector Gadget or is that just me?]

Nominator: mcflubbin (7/10)

(2, 4, ... 5.5 if I cheat and use a Spotify link ; 0 if I'm forced to include the horror video)

[I was going to question the horror video, but I doubt I want an answer.]

The slasher video is tame enough that I can't really complain about it, yet I want to complain about it and am complaining about it, which doesn't really make sense but then I started typing without really thinking about what I was going to say and now we're just kinda stuck rambling because I didn't have a plan when this started and I'm not sure how it's going to end, but seriously, why a slasher video--and I mean that in all possible versions of the question as in why did you nominate the video when you could have not made me watch a bunch of death, why did she go with that as the video for her 70s inspired love song, why did no one stop her, why did no one stop me from starting this run-on sentence, does this count as a "run on sentence" if there are multiple questions contained within it, and is "run-on" sentence hyphenated or not?

Ohh, I don't think I ever explained Buttercream, did I? She's a supporting character from Hasbro's shortlived Littlest Pet Shop series that ran on The Hub (a great network that died too soon); her gimmick is basically being too hyperactive and spouting a long string of gibberish that no one understands. Whenever anyones says "What?", she does...whatever that is and gives an exagerated slow-motion Aaaanywhoo... before restating things in a way that people can understand.

I really relate to that and have a tendency to use that video whenever I know I've gone way off subject or started rambling in a way that no one's going to get. Like that earlierr wall of text! Or...this one where I just discussed at length why I relate to a bunny from a discontinued cartoon during a write-up for...whatever that video I was supposed to be ranking was.

...

Right, right! Aaanywho, point is, I didn't like that video and substituted a Spotify link when listening to it again as I did for Lady Fantasy. It's a fairly nice 70s inspired song when there's not all the blood and screaming.
