Transformers is about robots, but it's really about war and the individuals who fight that war. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about turtles, but it's really about brotherhood. Lion King is about lions, but it's really about monarchical rule and personal responsibility. Watership Down is about rabbits, but is really about a community having to relocate. All of these stories feature nonhuman protagonists, but still have anthropomorphism at its core. They're still functionally human even if the stories are crafted in such a manner to remind us that they're not. The most anthropomorphism that Godzilla has had is in striking victory poses, cursing, or telling Anguirus to check out the mainland. I'm fine with Godzilla getting into 20 minute wrestling matches, but that's not going to reach the same audience as a film which has human characters reacting to Godzilla as though he were a natural disaster or some strange anomaly of life. |

| Skye Reynolds 05/29/19 4:21:37 PM #1 | After the Nazis have stamped their logo on the crate containing the Ark, the Ark takes it upon itself to burn the offending image off. This is never verbally addressed, but is the film's first irrefutable evidence that the Ark is indeed supernatural. There's a rumor that the original ending would've seen the Ark burning the US stamp off of its new crate as well. I readily dismissed this when I read it, but this talk of Star Wars has got me thinking. There was a topic a while back where George Lucas allegedly wrote in a document back in the 80s that the Rebels represented hippies and the Vietcong whereas the Empire represented the US army. It makes sense when you consider the forest-dwelling Ewoks defeating the more technologically advanced Empire, the presence of the Millennium Falcon's alien copilot Nien Nunb (who is crudely modeled after an Asian person in a way that would not fly today), and the manner in which the rebel symbol resembles a peace symbol. And then there's American Graffiti. With that in mind, I wonder if Lucas actually wanted them to burn the "Top Secret Army Intel" label off of the side to draw a parallel between the US government and fascism. By the way, I do not agree with Lucas if that is the case. I'm just stating out of curiosity that I wonder how deep his sentiments toward the US ran and whether or not he wanted to have the movie end that way. |

What's that about? Is it SimCity? Is it about gang violence? Manufacturing automobiles? Without the subtitle, the title gives you nothing to go on and nothing to pique your interest. Now the movie of that name has a good reason for being called Detroit. It's about a pivotal chapter in that city's history. But for a game title, Detroit alone wouldn't work. |

| Skye Reynolds 05/29/19 11:14:12 AM #5 | Not true. I hated the action scenes and still enjoyed they movie. I think the Bourne Identity / Batman Begins style of rapid edits during fight scenes is the absolute worst thing to ever happen to action movies. Even fight scenes with good choreography -- like the first fight between Cap and Winder Soldier or Bond against Mr. Hinx -- are ruined by the editors keeping their finger fixed on the fast-forward button. I have to rewind these fights again and again to pick up all of the little details and get a complete picture of the fight that's taking place. That's not how it should be. It has a good political plot and enjoyable characterizations to back up the action. I don't enjoy it as much as everyone else does. It's probably not a top 5 superhero movie for me. But it is a solid 8/10. I will most certainly contend that there is a lot more going on than flashy action sequences with little substance. |

Undoubtedly, a good portion of the film's success comes from people who saw it multiple times. They probably would've had a larger amount of repeat viewers had those same people not recently purchased tickets for Captain Marvel as well. Or maybe it would've still fallen shy. Looking at that number again, there's a larger gap that I gave it credit for the first time. Either way, Disney would probably rather have that Captain Marvel money than the accolade of having bested Avatar. |

The absence of Godzilla is hardly noticeable because of the other monsters on screen and the interesting story woven into the film. If you look at the original Alien, the creature has less than 4 minutes of screentime in total. It's not the time you spend on screen. It's what you do with that time. Now, Godzilla '14 was no Jaws. Godzilla abruptly disappears and that wreaks of sloppy editing. But it wasn't enough to ruin the film for me. While I have little faith in the human element of this film, I trust the monster fight will deliver. Leonard Maltin gave Godzilla 1985 a half-star out of four and that's quite possibly the best Godzilla movie aside from the original. Godzilla's never been a friend of critics. I'll withhold judgment until I've seen the film myself. |

They've already done this with other games. You can't say it's fear mongering that they're going to give the character a more modest figure when they've already done this to other characters. If the Boogey Man has proven himself to be real through multiple hauntings, yes, there's reason to be worried about the Boogey Man. Not everything is about identity politics or those damn libaruls. I don't get caught up in red camp versus blue camp. I care about the content that I like. I'm not feigning outrage to find an issue with the political opposition. I simply oppose this type of censorship the way that people who like their alcohol would oppose prohibition. It has nothing to do with who it's coming from. |

Yes, Aeries looked nice despite a smaller bust. It doesn't define beauty. That's not the issue. The issue is people getting sick and tired of large breasts being more readily removed from media than cigarettes. Not every woman has to have them, but there shouldn't be this standard where no woman is allowed them. No matter how pretty Tifa looks in the remake, we're gonna be pissed if she's deflated. Yes, men like breasts. Straight men. Most straight men. Yes, some of us like cartoon, anime, video game breasts. So what? Do I have to apologize for watching superhero movies for the fight scenes? People are sick of this anti-sex crap and rightfully so. It's one thing to not want a highly trained government agent to dress like a stripper. It's another to say that nobody larger than a c cup is allowed to be featured in any media outside porn. |
