If my parents and teachers had explained the importance of grades is for grants and scholarships, I'd have actually put some effort into school. I think you told him as much as is relevant for his age, without getting into historical basis or societal construct. He might be unsatisfied with the "why people do that", but if it comes up again, you weren't far off the mark. The oversimplified truth of racism, and similar bigotries, is that bad people feel better about themselves when they can look down on other people. Hell, I do that on this board when I troll.
