I feel like the audience score is higher than usual because we all get the gist of the "live-action" remakes - you like them or you don't. If you're going to see it you probably already know you like it.

Same, this should be a good year for horror with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and It 2 on the horizon, plus hopefully at least one surprise by year's end.

oh hey I'm gonna bump this cuz I never embarrassed myself by sharing my emotional reactions to sappy movie moments

- I cried in theaters both times I saw Where the Wild Things Are: at the end when Max sails away, and Carol arrives to try to make amends but is too late, so he just howls. that one hit really hard.
- the ending of La La Land. oof. I loved the music but I couldn't even listen to it for a couple months afterward because the ending messed me up.
- "When She Loved Me" in Toy Story 2 still gets me
- ending of Schindler's List
- "It's not your fault" scene in Good Will Hunting
- Andy giving his toys away at the end of Toy Story 3, of course
- when I was maybe 5 years old, we had this animated short called "The Snowman" on VHS. this boy goes on a magical adventure with a snowman he built who came to life. the next morning, he excitedly goes outside to greet him only to find that he has melted:

And the credits just roll right there! I mean, damn. I sobbed every time as a little kid.

it has the best 3D platformer (SM64), the best console FPS for multiplayer (Perfect Dark) and single player (GoldenEye), and is the best party console ever (Mario Party 1-3, MK64, Pokmon Stadium, Smash, Mario Tennis/Golf). Then you have the Zeldas and Banjo-Kazooie on top of that.

thought I had already made this post re: ghost movies, but I guess I fell asleep before I clicked 'post':

Lake Mungo sounds really interesting, I know RedLetterMedia was big on it. I've thought about watching A Ghost Story but I feel like I have to kind of be emotionally prepared for it, from what I've heard.

my top 10 ghost movies are, give or take:

The Ring
The Sixth Sense
The Others
The Orphanage
Shutter (original)
The Woman in Black
Kairo (Pulse)
The Innkeepers
Mama
The Grudge

Definitely a fair set for the top 4. I also had Sixth Sense spoiled for me well before I saw it, but it was so effective and put together so skillfully that I loved it anyway, and watched it many more times afterward. Memorable performances from Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, and Donnie Wahlberg, who committed to a one-scene appearance more than maybe any actor ever. A very rare feel-good horror movie with a unique tone that M. Night was never quite able to replicate. Probably my 2nd-favorite ghost movie after The Ring.

A rare case of me preferring the remake. Ringu's barebones style makes some parts (like THE scene) scarier because it feels more real, not being dressed up with effects (similar thing can be said about the soundtrack). However in the in-between moments, the watery, decaying look, visual motifs and Hans Zimmer's chilling, yet melancholy score do a huge part in carrying the film. It feels much more polished, both in style and substance, as more care has gone into connecting plot details. Both films are classic but the American version goes that extra mile in most aspects.

Oh no Blair Witch way too low. Found footage is really played out now but the og one still holds up. It does minimalism really well - I was glad to catch it in a theater at a midnight Halloween showing several years ago.

I haven't seen Arachnophobia since like high school but I remember it being good campy fun, especially John Goodman's character. I'd say that one's a little low too.
