That is really scary
https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-un-nuclear/risk-of-nuclear-war-now-highest-since-ww2-u-n-arms-research-chief-says-idUKKCN1SR24F

The risk of nuclear weapons being used is at its highest since World War Two, a senior U.N. security expert said on Tuesday, calling it an urgent issue that the world should take more seriously.

Renata Dwan, director of the U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), said all states with nuclear weapons have nuclear modernisation programmes underway and the arms control landscape is changing, partly due to strategic competition between China and the United States.

Traditional arms control arrangements are also being eroded by the emergence of new types of war, with increasing prevalence of armed groups and private sector forces and new technologies that blurred the line between offence and defence, she told reporters in Geneva.

With disarmament talks stalemated for the past two decades, 122 countries have signed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons, partly out of frustration and partly out of a recognition of the risks, she said.

I think that its genuinely a call to recognise and this has been somewhat missing in the media coverage of the issues that the risks of nuclear war are particularly high now, and the risks of the use of nuclear weapons, for some of the factors I pointed out, are higher now than at any time since World War Two.

The nuclear ban treaty, officially called the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, was backed by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

The treaty has so far gathered 23 of the 50 ratifications that it needs to come into force, including South Africa, Austria, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico. It is strongly opposed by the United States, Russia, and other states with nuclear arms.

Cuba also ratified the treaty in 2018, 56 years after the Cuban missile crisis, a 13-day Cold War face-off between Moscow and Washington that marked the closest the world had ever come to nuclear war.

Dwan said the world should not ignore the danger of nuclear weapons.

How we think about that, and how we act on that risk and the management of that risk, seems to me a pretty significant and urgent question that isnt reflected fully in the (U.N.) Security Council, she said.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/jerusalem-haredi-protesters-flee-after-women-strip-down-to-bras/
Scores of police in Jerusalem backed up by officers on horseback trying to break up an ultra-Orthodox street protest Saturday got some help from an unexpected quarter women who took their tops off, driving away the protesters, who are religiously forbidden from looking at them.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox men and boys clashed with police Saturday afternoon, blocking traffic and attacking officers during a protest against Shabbat transgression by workers preparing the Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv on the Jewish day of rest.

As protesters blocked roads beside an ultra-Orthodox area in the center of the city, at least four women stripped down to their bras, forcing the protesters to leave the area due to the prohibition against looking at women in dress deemed immodest.

Although the broadcast of the Eurovision finale started after the Sabbath, rehearsals and production preparations took place earlier in the day. The issuing of work permits for the event led an ultra-Orthodox political party to temporarily suspend coalition negotiations and sparked the Saturday protest in the capital.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews strictly respect religious law prohibiting work on Shabbat, the weekly day of rest, from sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday.

Ahead of the Eurovision final, one of Israels chief rabbis called for those who keep Shabbat to extend their observance of the holy day by 20 minutes in response to the great desecration.

Some ultra-Orthodox Jews object to photos of women, even when clothed, in public places or media on grounds of modesty. For decades there have been repeated incidents of posters featuring women defaced in the capital and other cities.

https://riotimesonline.com/brazil-news/rio-politics/society/in-the-last-three-months-alone-pesticides-have-killed-some-500-million-bees-in-brazil/
Earlier this year, a large scale of bee deaths was reported in southern Brazil due to pesticides used in soybean plantations. In Rio Grande do Sul, about 80 percent of bees are dying because of Fipronil pesticides, which are used in soybean farming.

This issue is even more serious and extensive, given that it has been occurring in other states of the country.

According to Agncia Pblica and Reprter Brasil, some 500 million bees have died in the last three months in four Brazilian states: 400 million in Rio Grande do Sul, 7 million in So Paulo, 50 million in Santa Catarina and 45 million in Mato Grosso do Sul.

This is an estimate by beekeeping associations, agriculture secretariats, and research conducted by universities. The cause of extermination, according to experts, is the species contact with pesticides based on neonicotinoids and Fipronil, banned in Europe for more than a decade.

The ingredients contained in these pesticides are lethal to insects when sprayed, as they spread beyond the affected area.

Fipronil is an insecticide that acts on insects nerve cells. When applied by aerial spraying, bees are directly exposed to it. An Embrapa survey, conducted in 2004, found that the method dispersed 19 percent of the sprayed pesticide to areas outside the area of application.

Neonicotinoid pesticides, on the other hand, have the potential of spreading throughout the entire plant. They are used in different crops: cotton, corn, soybeans, rice, and potatoes.

1. mass extinction of all land animals. Note that the vast majority has occurred within 30 years, so potentially we could see the rest go within a shorter time frame

2. mass extinction of all sea life. There are reports that over 90% of all large marine life is gone, overfishing is continuing and there are reports that the ocean will be cleansed of all life by 2050

3. Insect biomass is disappearing at 2.5% per year which will only snowball as agriculture increases. Another mass extinction even which will speed up more extinction as the food chains are hugely disrupted

4. Permafrost melting ice melting. both contain unthinkable amounts of carbon and methane which will be the absolute hammer blow to our civilisation, I think most know enough about this to go on any further

5. antibiotic resistance. there's been many articles showing that doctors and scientist believe within 10 to 15 years most antibiotics will lose effectiveness. this is crazy as pencillin was more or less the greatest invention and kickstarted modern medicine, people will literally die from infections and all surgeries will be a roll of the dice

6. chronic disease explosion. diabetes, cancer, heart disease, dementia and dozens of other diseases have exploded to unthinkable numbers. Ive read many warnings and articles from doctors who think within the next decade the entire medical system could collapse from the huge strain on budgets as entire populations contract these diseases

My prediction 2030 will see the all these issues intersect and a series of hammer blows will bring most nations to their knees and we could start officially seeing the acceptance of collapse world wide. Now im not a scientist or anything and I know ive probably missed a hundred other issues o please feel free to add anything you know about

Basically the Boomers fucked us hard and are going to get away with a cushy retirement treeko

I like alternate history stories. one of my favorite writers is a guy named Harry Turtledove who made a career out of alternate history novels. I will always give a show in that genre a try. they are very rare after all. no. it doesn't HAVE to be told. but it's a cool idea

I love me some Harry Turtledove. Reading this series right now where it's WW2 except in a fantasy world. The airplanes are all wyverns and dragons and the tanks are gigantic rhino beasts. It's quite enjoyable ninjask
