Obviously in some places a shorter but closer obstruction would block the view. But if you had line of sight, could you actually see it? You would be looking up to 12,400 miles if the farthest point in this hypothetical flat world was as far as halfway around the globe. But you'd be looking all that distance through atmosphere. At even just 10 miles out on a clear day, you can't see much detail anymore on anything. You see a silhouette. At 12,000 miles, I can't imagine you'd even see that. What is a silhouette? It's a dark spot caused by obstructing the back-scattering of sunlight from the sky behind the object, which is brighter than the object itself. With 12,000 miles of unobstructed sky sending blue light back at you, the loss of what little light is still beyond that would be imperceptible. More interesting though is what is the distance at which the silhouette would fade to a point where you could barely tell? Not sure where to start the math on that, but I'd love to see it. Stuff like this is why i enjoy these topics.
