https://gizmodo.com/abc-news-broadcasts-fake-syria-bombing-video-thats-actu-1839028685?
ABC News aired a video on Sunday that host Tom Llamas said depicted a Turkish attack in northern Syria against Kurdish civilians. Turkey is indeed pushing into Syria and slaughtering Kurds along the way, but the video ABC News played last night is from a military gun demonstration in Kentucky that was published to YouTube in 2017.

This video, right here, appearing to show Turkeys military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town, Llamas said on the October 13 broadcast as the video played.

But the explosions in the video are identical to explosions seen in a video titled, Knob Creek night shoot 2017. Knob Creek Gun Range, in the town of West Point, Kentucky, hosts a biannual event called the Military Gun Shoot & Military Gun Show where weapons are fired at night. Members of the public can come and see the show for a fee in April and October.

Side-by-side, its clear that the videos are the same:

Both anchor Tom Llamas and foreign correspondent Ian Panell can be heard using language to make it clear that ABC News didnt shoot the video and instead acquired it from an outside source.

This video, obtained by ABC News, appears to show the fury of the Turkish attack on the border town of Tal Abyad two nights ago, Panell said during the Sunday broadcast.

Its unclear if the video may have been slightly manipulated before it was handed to ABC News. But the unedited video from Kentucky shows people holding up their phones to capture the destruction, while the video broadcast by ABC News appears to have colors that are less saturated than the original.

Weve taken down video that aired on World News Tonight Sunday and Good Morning America this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its accuracy. ABC News regrets the error, an ABC News spokesperson told Gizmodo via email.

Video of the broadcast was previously available on YouTube but was set to private after Gizmodo reached out to ABC News producers. Gizmodo downloaded a copy of the video before it was removed and has uploaded short clips of both videos so people can see for themselves.

A video depicting a macabre scene of a fake President Trump shooting, stabbing and brutally assaulting members of the news media and his political opponents was shown at a conference for his supporters at his Miami resort last week, according to footage obtained by The New York Times.

Several of Mr. Trumps top surrogates including his son Donald Trump Jr., his former spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis were scheduled to speak at the three-day conference, which was held by a pro-Trump group, American Priority, at Trump National Doral Miami. Ms. Sanders and a person close Mr. Trumps son said on Sunday that they did not see the video at the conference.

The video, which includes the logo for Mr. Trumps 2020 re-election campaign, comprises a series of internet memes. The most violent clip shows Mr. Trumps head superimposed on the body of a man opening fire inside the Church of Fake News on parishioners who have the faces of his critics or the logos of media organizations superimposed on their bodies. It appears to be an edited scene of a church massacre from the 2014 dark comedy film Kingsman: The Secret Service.

The disclosure that the video was played shows how Mr. Trumps anti-media language has influenced his supporters and bled into their own propaganda. Mr. Trump has made attacks on the news media a mainstay of his presidency, and he tweeted a similar but far less violent video in 2017. In recent weeks as he has confronted impeachment proceedings, he has ramped up his attacks on the news media, repeatedly calling it the enemy of the people.

A spotlight on the people reshaping our politics. A conversation with voters across the country. And a guiding hand through the endless news cycle, telling you what you really need to know.

A person who attended the conference last week took a video of the clip on his phone and had an intermediary send it to a reporter for The Times. Parts of the video were posted on YouTube in 2018 by a user with a history of creating pro-Trump mash-ups.

The organizer of the event said in a statement on Sunday that the clip had been played at the conference, saying it was part of a meme exhibit. He denounced the video and said his organization was looking into how it was shown at the event.

Average wealth for white families is seven times higher than average wealth for black families. Worse still, median white wealth (wealth for the family in the exact middle of the overall distributionwealthier than half of all families and less-wealthy than half) is twelve times higher than median black wealth. More than one in four black households have zero or negative net worth, compared to less than one in ten white families without wealth, which explains the large differences in the racial wealth gap at the mean and median. These raw differences persist, and are growing, even after taking age, household structure, education level, income, or occupation into account.

https://www.politico.com/news/2019/10/12/trump-lev-parnas-photo-giuliani-045137

A photograph of President Donald Trump posing with a recently indicted associate of Rudy Giuliani was posted online in April 2014, two years prior to what had been their first known interaction.

In the photo, Trump and Lev Parnas stand shoulder to shoulder, smiling at the camera at what appears to be an outdoor nighttime event. Trump wears a white, Trump-branded cap and white shirt under a jacket. Parnas wears a royal blue collared shirt. The circumstances of the meeting captured in the photograph remain unclear.

It was posted on April 2, 2014, on the Facebook account of Shawn Jaros, also known as Shawn Jarosovich. Jaros captioned the photo the big homies!!!!!!!!!!! for real tho and then commented on the photo, salute lev im coming brother!!!!!!!!!

Two weeks earlier, on March 14, Jaros posted, Shout out to my ukranian boss and brother Lev Parnas thank you for eberything you and your team doing for me, i cant repay you enough!!!!!!!! and i want to meet the donald soon!!!!!!

That post suggests the meeting captured in the photo was not a chance interaction, and that Parnas had discussed his access to Trump with Jaros.

Trump has sought to distance himself from Parnas, the Florida businessman at the center of a ballooning scandal over illicit foreign influence in his administration and, more broadly, the American political system. But the photograph and post provide further evidence that the two men are more closely tied than Trump has let on.

Other Facebooks posts by Jaros around that time describe Parnas as a business partner. Jaros does not reveal the nature of their work together, but on March 14, 2014, he posted, three letters llc!!!!!!!!!!!! on his Facebook page. May 28, 2014, he posted, two words foreign investments!!!!!!!!!!!! on his Facebook page. On May 22, he posted, i was told today some people i deal with have 300 mllion in dong in their posession.

A year later, on May 12, 2015, he posted a photo of Parnas sitting in the backseat of a Rolls Royce with the caption, the big homie, okk, one call and bammm!!!!!!
...

Following the unsealing of Parnass indictment last week for campaign finance violations over alleged schemes to buy political influence on behalf of foreigners, Trump said he did not know Parnas or his business partner and co-defendant, Igor Fruman. I dont know those gentleman, he told reporters before boarding Marine One en route to a campaign rally in Minneapolis. Maybe they were clients of Rudy. Youd have to ask Rudy.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal described Parnass attendance at a Trump campaign fundraiser attended by the candidate and Giuliani in October 2016 as his first known appearance in Mr. Trumps circle. Parnas, 47, told the Washington Post that he sold Trump Organization condos while Trumps father, Fred, was still running the business.

POLITICO reported on Friday that the French newspaper Le Monde interviewed Parnas at the Trump campaigns invite-only election night party in 2016, and that Parnas described himself to the paper as a friend of Trumps.

Those are not Parnass only ties to the campaign. His son, Aaron, volunteered for the Trump campaign in Florida in 2016, according to a 2017 profile in the Palm Beach Post.

Once Bill realized it he cut him off.

That's not quite what this story suggests

Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates first met face to face on the evening of Jan. 31, 2011, at Mr. Epsteins townhouse on the Upper East Side. They were joined by Dr. Eva Andersson-Dubin, a former Miss Sweden whom Mr. Epstein had once dated, and her 15-year-old daughter. (Dr. Andersson-Dubins husband, the hedge fund billionaire Glenn Dubin, was a friend and business associate of Mr. Epsteins. The Dubins declined to comment.)

Mr. Gates praised Mr. Epsteins charm and intelligence. Emailing colleagues the next day, he said: A very attractive Swedish woman and her daughter dropped by and I ended up staying there quite late.

Mr. Gates soon saw Mr. Epstein again. At a TED conference in Long Beach, Calif., attendees spotted the two men engaged in private conversation.
...
In late 2011, at Mr. Gatess instruction, the foundation sent a team to Mr. Epsteins townhouse to have a preliminary talk about philanthropic fund-raising, according to three people who were there. Mr. Epstein told his guests that if they searched his name on the internet they might conclude he was a bad person but that what he had done soliciting prostitution from an underage girl was no worse than stealing a bagel, two of the people said.

Some of the Gates Foundation employees said they had been unaware of Mr. Epsteins criminal record and had been shocked to learn that the foundation was working with a sex offender. They worried that it could seriously damage the foundations reputation.

In early 2012, another Gates Foundation team met Mr. Epstein at his mansion. He claimed that he had access to trillions of dollars of his clients money that he could put in the proposed charitable fund a figure so preposterous that it left his visitors doubting Mr. Epsteins credibility.

Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein kept seeing each other. Ms. Arnold would not say how many times the two had met.

In March 2013, Mr. Gates flew on Mr. Epsteins Gulfstream plane from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey to Palm Beach, Fla., according to a flight manifest. Ms. Arnold said Mr. Gates who has his own $40 million jet hadnt been aware it was Mr. Epsteins plane.

Six months later, Mr. Nikolic and Mr. Gates were in New York for a meeting related to Schrdinger, a pharmaceutical software company in which Mr. Gates had a large investment. On that trip, Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates met for dinner and discussed the Gates Foundation and philanthropy, Ms. Arnold said.

And in October 2014, Mr. Gates donated $2 million to the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Media Lab. University officials described the gift in internal emails as having been directed by Mr. Epstein. Ms. Arnold said, There was no intention, nor explicit ask, for the funding to be controlled in any manner by Epstein.

Soon after, the relationship between Mr. Epstein and Mr. Gates appears to have cooled. The charitable fund that had been discussed with the Gates Foundation never materialized. Mr. Epstein complained to an acquaintance at the end of 2014 that Mr. Gates had stopped talking to him, according to a person familiar with the discussion.

The relationship, however, wasnt entirely severed. At least two senior Gates Foundation officials maintained contacts with Mr. Epstein until late 2017, according to former foundation employees.

Ms. Arnold said the foundation was not aware of any such contact. Over time, Gates and his team realized Epsteins capabilities and ideas were not legitimate and all contact with Epstein was discontinued, she said.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/12/business/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytimes

Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who committed suicide in prison, managed to lure an astonishing array of rich, powerful and famous men into his orbit.

There were billionaires (Leslie Wexner and Leon Black), politicians (Bill Clinton and Bill Richardson), Nobel laureates (Murray Gell-Mann and Frank Wilczek) and even royals (Prince Andrew).

Few, though, compared in prestige and power to the worlds second-richest person, a brilliant and intensely private luminary: Bill Gates. And unlike many others, Mr. Gates started the relationship after Mr. Epstein was convicted of sex crimes.

Mr. Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, whose $100 billion-plus fortune has endowed the worlds largest charitable organization, has done his best to minimize his connections to Mr. Epstein. I didnt have any business relationship or friendship with him, he told The Wall Street Journal last month.

In fact, beginning in 2011, Mr. Gates met with Mr. Epstein on numerous occasions including at least three times at Mr. Epsteins palatial Manhattan townhouse, and at least once staying late into the night, according to interviews with more than a dozen people familiar with the relationship, as well as documents reviewed by The New York Times.

Employees of Mr. Gatess foundation also paid multiple visits to Mr. Epsteins mansion. And Mr. Epstein spoke with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and JPMorgan Chase about a proposed multibillion-dollar charitable fund an arrangement that had the potential to generate enormous fees for Mr. Epstein.

His lifestyle is very different and kind of intriguing although it would not work for me, Mr. Gates emailed colleagues in 2011, after his first get-together with Mr. Epstein.

Bridgitt Arnold, a spokeswoman for Mr. Gates, said he was referring only to the unique dcor of the Epstein residence and Epsteins habit of spontaneously bringing acquaintances in to meet Mr. Gates.

It was in no way meant to convey a sense of interest or approval, she said.

Over and over, Mr. Epstein managed to cultivate close relationships with some of the worlds most powerful men. He lured them with the whiff of money and the proximity to other powerful, famous or wealthy people so much so that many looked past his reputation for sexual misconduct. And the more people he drew into his circle, the easier it was for him to attract others.

Mr. Gates and the $51 billion Gates Foundation have championed the well-being of young girls. By the time Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein first met, Mr. Epstein had served jail time for soliciting prostitution from a minor and was required to register as a sex offender.

Ms. Arnold said that high-profile people had introduced Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein and that they had met multiple times to discuss philanthropy.

Bill Gates regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognizes it was an error in judgment to do so, Ms. Arnold said. Gates recognizes that entertaining Epsteins ideas related to philanthropy gave Epstein an undeserved platform that was at odds with Gatess personal values and the values of his foundation.

I think Origins does a better job of telling its story, but Odyssey kept me hooked and playing it much longer.

https://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/buzz/2019/10/11/amid-outrage-and-fanfare-uf-hosts-donald-trump-jr/

The political winds that have darkened the nations discourse swept through the University of Floridas normally placid campus this week with a visit by Donald Trump Jr. that stirred passions from all directions.

The presidents son was joined by former Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle, his girlfriend, who serves as an adviser for Donald Trumps 2020 reelection campaign. And though the UF campus has seen controversial speakers before, students, university officials and police say this appearance seemed different.

The Thursday night visit was much smaller than when white nationalist Richard Spencer paid to rent space at UF and speak to students in 2017, but some observers, including those supporting Trump, drew parallels between the events. Both were big and divisive, forcing the university to pull out all the stops with security.

Six law enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service were present, according to UF spokesman Steve Orlando. Officers, squad cars and police barricades dotted areas surrounding University Auditorium, where the pair spoke to about 800 people.
....
Many expressed outrage that, unlike with Spencer, the $50,000 paid to the speakers came from student activity fees collected by UF along with tuition. That money is then distributed to student government groups, including ACCENT, which organizes guest speakers.

The groups chairman, Henry Fair, has declined multiple times to answer questions from the Tampa Bay Times and other media outlets about how Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle were selected to speak at UF. But protesters say students were never consulted.

It sends the message that student government doesnt care about the student body and what they want, said graduate student Maxine Donnelly, 25, noting that the event was carried out through the bureaucracy of UF.

A contract between the speakers and ACCENT limited journalists to photograph and record no more than 10 minutes of the hour-long event, despite different instructions from the university. Members of ACCENT tried to enforce the rule, threatening to remove reporters from the venue when they lifted their phones and cameras.

Because Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle accepted public funds, they were barred from campaigning for President Trump. But they edged up to that line, praising his policies and ideology, and urging students in the nations largest swing state to turn away from a socialist Democratic Party.

Emily Hyden, who organized the protest outside, said Friday that the event felt like a campaign stop and violated campaign laws by promoting President Trump using public funds.

She said she is working to find an attorney willing to challenge the content of the speeches so UF can recoup the money paid to Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle.

At the same time, comments by the speakers were ridiculously offensive and completely insensitive, said Hayden, 20. Its the rhetoric that is echoed time and time again through Trump events, and I dont think it brought any intellectual value to the University of Florida.

Guilfoyle opened by asking attendees if they were hot for her. Trump Jr. joked later about the movement against sexual violence after the couple leaned in for a kiss on stage.

Eliud Kipchoge made history in Vienna by running the first-ever sub two-hour marathon in a time of 1hr 59min 40sec. Cheered on by thousands of fans, the Kenyan world record holder and Olympic champion completed four laps of a 9.4km circuit around the Prater, a park in the centre of the Austrian capital.

Kipchoge achieved the feat with a team of 41 in-and-out pacemakers, seven at a time, whose positions were guided by lasers projected on the road from a support car in front. These assisted conditions, and the fact the run was not part of an open event, mean his achievement will not count as an official world record.

He remained on target throughout the effort, running each kilometre consistently in around 250. Five pacemakers ran shoulder-to-shoulder in front of Kipchoge, with one man on either side.

Branded the Ineos 1:59 Challenge, Battersea Park in London was initially discussed as a potential venue. The 34-year-old previously attempted the feat at Monza in Italy in 2017, falling short by 26 seconds.

Kipchoge said: I am feeling good. It has taken 65 years for a human to make history in sport. After Roger Bannister [running a sub four-minute mile in 1954] it took another 65 years Im happy to be the man to run under two hours. No human is limited, and Im expecting more people to do it after today.

The 41 pacemakers are among the best athletes in the whole world to all of them I want to say thank you, thank you for doing the job. We made history together.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos chairman and CEO, said: That last kilometre, where he accelerated and he came through on his own, it was super-human really. I cant believe he ran the first half-marathon in under an hour, and then he had to do that again.

Speaking in Vienna during Kipchoges run, four-times Tour de France champion Chris Froome said: Its phenomenal, its fantastic, its just incredible to watch him it looks like hes not even breathing. Hes just gliding over the road. Its fantastic to be here, and be part of this atmosphere.

The Kenyan-born cyclist added: To have someone doing something as monumental as this, its such a boost for all the athletes over there in Kenya. Its showing that the impossible is do-able.
