Write-Up:
This is a serious trip back to 1997 that weirdly makes me think of 1999 when Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Michelle Gellar were in their obvious primes. I can't think of anything else but Cruel Intentions when I first hear this song it's weird. Does that happen to anyone else? Anyway, this band really screwed their pooch with this song as they were not given legal permission to sample the main riff of the song from Andrew Loog Oldham's song which hilariously enough was a cover of a Rolling Stones' song. After the court was finished with the band they were bankrupt and Mick Jagger and Kieth Richards bankrolled the profits and got songwriting credits of The Verves' song itself. Bummer. It must have sucked to be them. They were able to produce a 4th and final album to date 11 years later but that must have been one hell of a kick to their egos considering how long it took them to regroup and give it another shot.

The 7th Folk Rock song to come your way is a classic without a doubt. Many folks get emotioal when they hear this song but really they get emotional when they hear any John Denver song am I rite? I'm kind of in the middle left. It can get me emotional but it's gotta be the right scenario which I'm rarely ever in as a grown male adult *cough. Anyway, John could really play some melancholic stuff back in his day. This song climbed the charts at a pretty steady pace but didn't take off at first. It took some time but once the album started to get around it was inevitable. I absolutely love a good folk artist because what they can do with a guitar is magical. The notes dance in your head like nothing else in my experience. I can close my eyes and listen to the back track of a large majority of folk rock and fall into a trance. Hopefully that doesn't make me weird lol.

Hey 2005 finally breaks into the 5 point zone. This is the most mediocre point of the decade imo so it might surprise some of you that I am dumping such a great tune here. The first and only song to drop by Hinder here in the ranking. It's a really great tune but Hinder isn't really a band that I ever branched off on. I couldn't honestly give you a breakdown of their top 10 songs as I simply couldn't list them. Of course I could look them up, give a listen and then pass an opinion on to you but tbh. Absolutely nothing else of theirs ever crossed my ear drums. They are basically a one-hit-wonder in my experience. Interestingly enough though, this song was played a ton on the radio and still does get played a bunch more than 10 years after it's release. It's so odd that I haven't heard anything else from them... oh wait hold the phone. This is actually the 2nd song of theirs I've ranked rofl. Wow. Sorry for the oversight there. What's more sad is I can't even remember off the top of my head which other song it is that I ranked. *facepalm

Here's a really fun and cheerful tune if I'm being completely honest. The beat is nice and bass really sounds great in the car but I have a funny story to tell here. First of all for those of you that do not know, I'm like 75% deaf in my left ear and about 20% in the right so hearing isn't really my strong suit. Anyway for the longest time until I could finally tune into the singer's dialect I could have sworn that he was finding himself a "Jelly Bear" lol. I don't know why but it was an embarrassing moment with the wife when I sang out the incorrect lyric this one time. It's definitely one of her favorite songs of this decade but she now can't help herself but ask me every time this song comes on "Hey did you find any Jelly Bears". So if you are wondering why I didn't rank it higher its because it lost quite a bit of appeal to me just for the sheer amount of taunting I got from my wife lol. I swear we heard the song like once a day for a year. >_>

The final appearance of Grand Funk Railroad makes it's way here and I'm not entirely sure I agree with the order of the 3 songs I included. I feel like I like Some Kind of Wonderful more but according to the score The Locomotion reigns supreme. Anyone who's ever gone to a roller skating rink in the 80's and 90's has most assuredly heard this song. Everybody was doing the Locomotion in my experience anyway. I probably just grew up in a corny neighborhood or something lol. I thought it was a popular thing anyway and it did top the charts so there is that. This song has also become another milestone in the ranking as the 60th Hard Rock tune to drop and thus far the most crowded genre on the list.

Not to be confused with Ed Sheeran's Photograph song is a classic from the 80's and a decent one at that. It topped some charts and is considered one of the top 500 hard rock songs of all time according to a couple of sources. It is only 1 of 2 Def Leppard songs included in this ranking. I never was a big Def Leppard fan but there is at least one tune I like better than anything else they have done and at least you'll get to hear that later on. I don't remember which films they were but I definitely recall hearing this used in a few movies. Hot Tub Time Machine was possibly one of them. Anyway, I'm not saying much here that can be called useful knowledge so I'll just move on.

Interesting that this is only the 2nd Grunge Rock song to make an appearance in the ranking but I do say imo, must be one of the grungiest rock songs ever created. It's one of the most depressingly melancholic songs I've ever heard too tbh. My wife is a pretty big Chris Cornell fan though and this was one of her favorite high school themes. Should I be worried about that? lol j/k. She just hung out with a bunch of metal heads. There were a lot of them in her school for some reason but it could have been worse I guess. She could have been practicing witchcraft or something to which there actually were a crazy number of goth girls at my high school oddly enough. Glad I chose not to date local lol. Wth. Had to change the link to the video because it contained a derogatory term.

Kicking off a 12 song run of 7.214 pointers we have I think the only nomination from Corrik who offered the nomination as a filler tune which I think I had to place on Alanna's list because it hadn't been filled all the way. Not sure if he suggested it as a serious nomination or a joke but it's here and surprisingly it has climbed a decent distance up the list. Personally I really kinda hate this song. It's just so dumb sounding to me that I would normally glaze over it for selection on any list that I'd compile. Unfortunately for you Alanna, this brings you down to 3 nominations remaining but it does bump you into the 1st place position in the Nominator Challenge atm.

A blast from the past for sure and one of the few successful hits of the famous Africa creators; Toto. It's kind of amazing to me how many people have heard Africa and know Toto performed it but cannot name another song by the band. This song actually did pretty well considering. I don't really know if I can relate to the message but it's a love song sort of I guess. I always think this song is from the 80's because when I think of Toto I immediately think of the 80's. It's sort of weird knowing close to nothing about a band that impacted almost all of my youth with a single song but it is what it is. Sorry for the short write-up on such a classic tune.

I really like the melody of this tune and it features Snoop Dogg which is kinda cool. The chorus can get a bit whiny in repeated listens but it can easily be overlooked. The sex appeal in the video here though is through the roof and I've been distracted a few times by some of the choreography lol. This is the first ranking of an Akon song but if you are a fan don't worry I got 2 more to come. I haven't sampled a ton of Akon's discography but he tends to get into the beats of his tunes. The 00's are dropping slower than any of the other decades and we are still outside of the Top 160 for this one so you might be able to discern that there will be lots of good songs from the decade to come if I'm dumping hits like this one already.

I think it's funny that Ice Cube is singing about having a great day and getting stoned etc. while the original cut/length of the song is 4:20. That isn't evident in the version here unfortunately but that is because the video I had got taken down for some reason. It's a nice beat and one of my favorites from Ice Cube even though I admittedly don't listen to too much of his work. Oh geesh. I'm gonna be honest with you all again here. I was never a big fan when Santana had his most major popularity spree in the late 90's. I love that he can absolutely rock the guitar but I found most of his collaborations to be less than thrilling. I do like some of his original work but none of that made it into the ranking so I guess it doesn't say that much. I wonder what Santana felt like having to play next to Whitey Ford considering the two play at dramatically different speeds on a regular basis. Ford's tunes are usually simplistic in chord progression while Santana's fingers dance all over the fret board. They did it though and the result is ok. That's all I'll give it for credit here.

I think it was the worst thing that could have happened to the band post Burton. I don't even know the name of the newest band member and really don't care to know tbh. This song just doesn't measure up to the iconic tunes the band is more known for imo. Because of unfamiliarity I sort of feel like this fell through the cracks in the opposite direction. On the surface I don't mind the beat and vocals but as a whole package it isn't necessarily a song I would listen to on a regular basis. The message of the song makes a bit of sense for me so it got some points there. Unfortunately it was right now when I realized that this song was used in Blair Witch 2 so it should have gotten atleast a point or so in the memories category since I've had to watch that movie a few times with the wife. (She's a horror buff and every year I have to slog through many of her horror favorites which include many B-rated sequels). Anyway, there are some obvious reasons this made it higher than I was expecting but I can't help that it feels like I should have had it lower than some tunes I've already dropped.

Umm.. so here I kinda have the opposite feeling of Ranking Regret where I think something should be much lower. I mean the score is accurate so this placement is right but there are several songs that have already been ranked that I feel like "on the surface" are better songs to listen to but then again it doesn't just come down to whether or not I can tolerate listening to a song. This is an ok song and it sounds like it should be a classic but the whole thing is under par imo. The band is/was semi-popular in Canada though so it made it onto the ranking when I was scooping up some of the top international songs from the 80's.

This song has a fun riff that catches my ear almost immediately. It seems that it'd be easy to learn and I like a good toe tapper from time to time. It really isn't that often that I give anything Country related a chance but Country Rock is among the most tolerable Country for me. This dude has been making music for quite some time and I actually thought this was from the 70's or 80's when hearing it for the first time. I was kinda shocked to see that it came out just 5 years ago.

Ok then. Had to change the video due to a copyright claim. Coulda sworn I had the official music video selected the first time around but I guess I didn't. If I were changing scores at this point I'd probably bump up the Beat and Hook here as the more I listen the "Better" they get imo. :P
Anyway, this might actually be the most recent favorite of GnR of mine (since honestly most of their other stuff sounds like they should have hung up their guitars and retired by now to me). The band can't top their significance in the 90's imo. The band still has a decent following of course even though it didn't get them to the top of the charts on this one. I thought it was funny to learn that the music video was delayed (missing a slated release) by none other than Lars Ulrich from Metallica who had given pre-authorization to use his image in the video but then later only signed off on one appearance forcing a video edit. I used to love Metallica above all else but the last couple of decades have proven that Lars is nothing but a self-righteous f***wit so I'm not too surprised here.

Not the best Black Sabbath song I've ever heard tbh. I didn't really catch it during nominations but now that I review this song I realize it is three songs back to back to back. Can't complain though since I let the two part Megatron song through. I ranked this as though it was one full song despite overlooking that detail. When I pulled it up on youtube there really wasn't an indication that it was three songs as far as I remember and I only discovered it when I looked at the Album's track list. Why am I over explaining myself here? (Because I really don't have anything else to say about this song.)

Pretty sure this was included in one of the GTA games. I definitely feel like I've been speeding around completing missions and such with this in the background. As a matter of fact it was a golf course mission that comes to mind so this has to be from Vice City. It isn't too bad of a beat but it's rather dull overall and not very exciting. I've heard it a few times growing up but never really took notice like you would to a Top 40 hit or something.

Some decent guitar play going into this song. It's slightly gothic but almost all 80's metal in a figurative kind of way. Obviously it's literally 80's metal but hopefully that makes sense. If I were to have had no idea what decade this was from, I would have said the 80's is what I'm redundantly getting at. Anyway, I've seen plenty of promotional material for this band over the years but have barely heard much from them. Not sure I was ever specifically disinterested but I just didn't shop their section at the record store partially resulting in my lack of experience with them.

I used to think I knew who Genesis was but now I know I had no idea. I've never heard this song before but holy hell... 23 minutes!!! This is quite the story that appears to cover some sort of religous message up until 11 minutes in and then I don't know what the hell it's about. Maybe that's when the acid kicked in while the band was jamming out this tune? I thought the illustrated video for this song would shed some light but that ends up weird too. The song has received mostly mixed reviews from what I can see but the album itself appears to have a higher approval rate. I'm just glad that I'll never have to listen to this one again.

Getting back into this we jump into a decent 70's tune that I somehow slipped by all my life without ever hearing. I don't mind music from The Who but I don't really go out of my way to hear their work. I had trouble digging up positive stuff about this song but it sounds like something that should have been popular in the 70's for sure. It has sort of an Epic feel to it but I don't feel like there is much story here with the repetitive lyrics. The more I listen to the song though the more it begins to charm me a little but... not quite enough for me to bump it from where it has landed unfortunately.

A double whammy for the 70's and another kick in the chinballz. Sad Wings of Destiny was another cassette tape that I had procured in my collection in the old days that I don't think I ever really paid much attention to and I can't really recall if I ever listened to it honestly. Why would I collect something I had no intentions of listening to? I dunno really, OCD's maybe. Tbh, the only tapes I ever really listened to consistently were from my Weird Al collection. There is some fair shredding going on in this song but nothing really stands out imo.

Oof. We are saying goodbye to yet another nominator. Chinballz, you're number is up as this is your last nomination in the ranking. It does however place you temporarily in 1st place so you got that for the moment! I honestly am not sure how this song places this high because on the surface it annoys the f*** out of me. But... it is kinda catchy in any party situation and that gdamn beat does get my knee bouncing a little. But only just a little. Eurodance is a genre that almost anyone can find some interest in imo. With the right vocal tracks I actually find most Eurodance hard to resist. I got a few good examples in the ranking to come. Anyway, farewell Chinballz. I can't recall how many times you popped in but hopefully you'll get to see the rankings when I post your Nominator Review.

Down goes another 70's tune. I don't recall the exact moment I heard this song for the first time but I do remember I was quite young and it was the backdrop for something else I recall in my life pretty well. I won't go into specifics because it's pretty lame but I would end up hearing this a ton growing up. It's kind of a goofy one-hit-wonder imo (not sure if it actually was a 1 hit wonder but I know of nothing else from the band atm) and it's too early for me to grab you some band history lol. I'm sort of focused on going to work in a bit here... and I haven't even left work yet! lol I'm so looking forward to dropping back to 1 job but I'm about 4 months away from the promotion I need at the store I'm currently working at. Anyway, this is a decent song but doesn't fare well with multiple listens. I feel like it was also the theme song for a show or movie I saw once but I can't seem to recall what that is atm.

720 out of 1300 isn't so bad. Anything that could slip into mediocre for me will be falling out up until around the Top 500 then it starts to get a bit more difficult to drop them. I'm not looking forward to the Top 100 in a sense that I'm not gonna want to drop anything there. It's gonna be very difficult for me to decide the final 25 songs.

Do you remember!? Nope, I had almost forgotten honestly but now that I get another listen wow so catchy. I must have been in a grumpy mood when I laid down the main score because I'm feeling the rhythm now lol. This will be stuck in my head all night for sure. Hopefully one of the songs to follow this will replace it. I could probably dance to this song pretty easily. I mean, is there anyone out there that couldn't? It should have had a much better score from me right? Well... I'll work through the score here. The beat is sweet but it feels situational to me like there are only certain settings that I'd hear it in. It would be awkward in front of the bro-type folks I sometimes hang around with for example. The hook is not so strong because I usually listen to certain playlists when I'm driving and this just wouldn't end up on one I'd make if I'm being honest. And finally it really can lose it's charm if you listen to it 10 times in a row. Go ahead and do it if you don't believe me. :P Fair score. Next.

I'm blue daba dee bada daa bada dee baadda... oh wrong song lol. (j/k) Of course I know what song we are on but it is only the 2nd of the only 2 songs I am familiar with by the band. This beat goes great with some of my graphic novels. I recently looped it for about 30 minutes while I finished book 3 of Morning Glories. It had an oddly atmospheric connection with the futuristic themes in the book. 1999 is certainly a memorable year for unique hits such as this and from my recollection, everyone was into it too. It's funny because I was finally out of high school and on my own and the music just made so much sense to me then. It's still good for a good head bob if you are looking for something uplifting. I'm almost always in a better mood after hearing this song which is why I make that claim. Despite my favoring of this tune it did not get much higher because it just wasn't as well received by the public which kinda blows my mind but perhaps it went unnoticed because it didn't get as much airplay as Blue did.

OMG... omg... oMG... OmG... omG... OMg... what else can I say about this video? Oh yeah my bad, we are ranking the song! lol But dang Britney. Some of those outfits seared my brain for life. Sex appeal is through the roof which is right in line with the song seeing that it is literally about seduction. The beat is ok but doesn't retain it's catchiness after a number of listens. I don't mind this kind of Dance Pop but I certainly don't love it. The intro is kinda piercing but isn't so sharp later in the song so it's tolerable. If I remember correctly Britney was making a hell of a comeback from some sort of personal drama that I didn't really quite follow. She appeared to be having identity issues but by this time she must have re-aligned with her inner spirit because she radiates confidence like a boss in this song and on this album imo.

Here's a cool and fun song from the 70's. Gotta dig that relaxed and chill vibe, certainly almost any stoner's delight. Hahaha no way... that's too funny lol. Paul Simon is our 420th artist/band to join the ranking. That's a weird a** coincidence. Anyway, as much as I can jive with this song it sits just outside the stack of tunes that I consider must hear from the decade. Not sure why I favor so few but we won't get the the best of the best of the decade until around the Top 50. Or at least to the songs I would say everyone must listen to at least once in their lifetime. I don't know much about Paul Simon admittedly although I have seen his records a number of time growing up. I do have a rare indulgence into all laid back rock songs of this sort from time to time. Particularly anything that sounds like I should be swinging in a hammock on some deserted island. You are guaranteed to hear a few more of these before we are done. =D

Kicking off the next block of tunes I will be delivering on this fine day is as some might guess, another song from this decade. I sure love starting with this decade every time I come back because I really wouldn't prefer it to beat any other decade. My unranked personal preference tells me that I like the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's much better. This song is hella catchy but can get really annoying if you are in the right type of mood. Being Bi-polar, I have had the ability to experience a wide variety of weird moods and I can tell you that the right mood and wrong song can brick up your day good. It's some sort of hypnotic subliminal key to your "inside out" and haywire can ensue at anytime if you listen to as much music as I do.lol Anyway, oh yeah, it sure is a nice day today. The last Styx song for the ranking and one that I unfortunately won't be lending a ton of dialogue to. Generally you either like Styx or you don't and there doesn't seem to be a middle of the road imo. I don't really know anyone that thinks they are kinda ok. The people I know either hate them or are super fans of the band. For me... I really don't care for them at all which is why you only got 2 of their songs in this ranking. So... like I said, you either like them or hate them. Sorry for the short write-up.

It feels like it's been a few songs since we dropped a nomination from the nomination challenge and so unfortunately we must drop 1 of the last 2 nominations Dragon has submitted. Lol. Sounds like I targeted you dude doesn't it? Welp, I didn't target you of course but I still feel bad for putting you closer to eliminated. This is a decent example of Post Grunge but doesn't quite sizzle enough overall. I do like the vocals and lyrical content but the background music drones out a little bit and there isn't really a strong distinguishable beat imo. I mean there is a beat obviously but I think it's because the drums and the guitars are competing at the same wavelength or something so neither really sets itself apart from the other. With this ranking it places you in 2nd place overall atm in the Nominator Challenge Dragon. Here's hoping your last nomination can carry you further. :P

In to the 80's we go for the next tune and it's a One-hit-wonder. Who would have guessed? lol. I can't recall how many times I longed over a crush as a kid with this playing on the radio though. It's a pretty decent love song so I'm curious why Chris never really had another hit. I do like some of his other songs such as Don't Pay the Ferryman and A Spaceman came Traveling but they are an acquired listen if you will. He does like to tell stories through his music so I'm surprised he didn't have more success. If you want to hear a good example of his story telling you should try listening to Spanish Train or Rose of England. It's not fantastic but kind of sums up his style. Lady In Red believe it or not is kind of outside the box for the artist which must have been confusing for him when it topped the charts and nothing else he ever did could.

Sweet. We get another dose of the 60's up in here lol. This song was started in 1969 of course but by the time of it's release it was spring of the new decade. I believe most of the song was written before the new year which is why I joke about it being a 60's tune. CCR really knew how to jam in their day though and were rising stars from day one. Brothers John and Tom Fogerty actually grew up in the bajou which makes them true Swamp Rockers. The 4 members of the band had actually started playing together in 1959 but hadn't formed the band until 1967. It's actually quite impressive the amount of hits they turned out for the mere 5 years they played as a band. I bet you didn't realize that either; that they were together for so short a time. Believe it or not though the band suffered from internal drama that would be the downfall of the band. They struggled with business and artistic control and I guess could never compromise. After they split up, each member went on to perform their own acts with John Fogerty really the only member to see success again in later years.

Oh no. This is gonna be stuck in my head all night now. >_> What a duo though am I rite. Strangely it seems as if Charlie could make an entire album with the most Bubblegum of them all none other than Meghan Trainor herself. I'm embarrassed to say that I kinda like this song. In hindsight I think I screwed it slightly on the vocals but there isn't much I can do about that now unfortunately. It is typical form for this popstained decade but whatever. I'm just glad we are around the corner from the next decade and hopefully the next music fad am I rite? Charlie has a couple more songs in the ranking (3 more to be exact) so this isn't the last you'll see of him for sure. I'm a big piano fan so it was inevitable that he'd get some songs up on the list.

Hey, we haven't had any Jukebox rock in awhile so this is nice. I've definitely seen this in a high 95% of all the jukeboxes I've ever put coins in. It was a pretty great rock tune back in the day and I can recall hearing it a bunch growing up. It's unfortunately the last sample we'll have from the band here (for the fans anyway) but I'm cool with it. There are far greater rock tunes ahead and this didn't stand much of a chance going any higher anyway. I found the song on several top 500+ lists of the greatest rock songs of all time and clearly I'd have it somewhere in the top 100+ or so Hard Rock songs here. I don't listen to nearly as much classic/hard rock as I used to and it's actually been awhile before this ranking of course since I heard this song last.

Blah sometimes I hate the year 1999 because of songs like these. They were wildly popular and had you uncontrollably and hopelessly getting caught bouncing to the beat when you should have realized the cheezy gotcha formula laced through most of the music that year. If you want substance from these cash grabbing beats you gotta go most of the way on your own with the interpretation because lyrically you get nothing but redundantly linked fanfare. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I can handle regurgitated melodies but a vocal driven broken record drives me nuts. Sadly, I got nothing else for you except yay Beyonce and whatnot. :p

Damn... well I gotta retract an earlier statement I made in the Give Me Everything ranking. 2011 actually wasn't the first year to hit 6 points. I missed good ol' 1985 that now stands at 6.233 points. Only one more Tears For Fears song to go after this unfortunately for the fans. The last one is clearly the best one but this one is pretty good. I recall this song immediately from Donnie Darko every time I hear it. DD is one of my favorite films of all time and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it! No really go watch it now! It features mudstuffin Jake Gyllenhaal! 1985 seems to be cranking out some decent hits though and actually isn't surprising to me to see it leading the pack.

Darn it to pieces I am torn about dropping this song this low lol. I'm gonna trust my scoring system though and just accept it to see how this turns out. There was once a time in my life though that Nu Metal was the only music I listened to and these guys headlined most of my mixed tapes. The vocals are kinda... eh... I dunno. I feel like they are unique in parts but then sound completely amateur in other places. I guess you could say that about most bands in the genre but usually it's one way or the other in any given song. They kinda go back and forth from record worthy to noobish imo. Still... that sick intro riff and beat makes me want to forgive and forget know what I mean? lol I can say I wasn't expecting to lose this one before the top 700 though. At least it got close.
