My first time playing Spyro was with Reignited Trilogy. So you could say that I'm in a really good position to say that it's not just nostalgia, these games actually are good. The first 3 games, anyway. From what I've heard it's one of those franchises where it gets worse and worse the longer it runs.

well that's just laziness tbh

You're not wrong lol. I just like to overthink little details like that. His constant dopey smile combined with all their other quirks gives me this delightful little headcanon that they're the Pokemon equivalent to Liu Shan from Dynasty Warriors, and that headcanon makes me smile.

It was such a small detail that told you so much about that player character. That and the fact you can make them pirouette for literally no reason, and they always have this dopey smile on their face. Sun and Moon protagonist didn't give a single fuck, yo.

Not "actual" anime, but check out the Castlevania adaptation on Netflix. It's got some cool fight scenes, a good amount of gore, and a sad scene near the end of season 2 that I really don't want to spoil. Gives me chills, man, literal chills.

If you end up liking Castlevania, you should also check out Seis Manos by the same animation studio. Basically it's a Mexican Wuxia with supernatural elements and drug cartels.

Reignited Trilogy was my first time actually playing these games and not just being a dumb kid with mashed potatoes for a brain who'll play with literally anything. Yes they're all worth playing. Probably a controversial opinion, but the first game was my favorite because it just focused a Spyro's gameplay while the 3rd game was my least favorite because of all the extra characters and mini games. Still a good game though.

In some of the earlier games, there was a support system where you could build supports between pairs of characters by having them fight together, which would grant them stat boosts and unlock support conversations. However, in those earlier games, very few of these supports actually led to romantic pairings or paired endings, and they were mostly side stories to learn more about those characters. It wasn't until Awakening when they expanded the support system, gave the player an avatar character and allowed the option to marry a recruitable character, then both Fates and Three Houses would follow suit. These three are the only ones that could be called "dating sims" in the Fire Emblem franchise.

Kagadiditfirst, kind of. Genealogy was basically a eugenics simulator before the 3DS games made that popular.

In Three Houses' case, basically the same way Persona manages it, in the sense that you're given downtime between battles to socialize with your party members.

I liked the story of the 1st game more than the 2nd, but I liked the 2nd game's gameplay more than the 1st game's. Which is kind of a shame because I thought the 2nd game was about to actually go somewhere interesting when it implied that your party isn't the only version of that party going around destroying alternate universes, but then that entire plot point just kinda petered out like a fart in the wind and the plot got bad again.

Far as I can tell it's just a reference to the 3 protagonists and they all possess both of their hands, so 2 hands x 3 protagonists = 6 hands. Doesn't have any other specific reference that I can think of otherwise. Maybe it just sounds catchy or something idfk.

Tbh I'm not really all that fussed about the details because all you really need to know is that it's a Mexican Wuxia with supernatural elements animated by the studio behind Castlevania and if that doesn't sound awesome then I don't wanna know you tbh.

If this is a low-key recommend manga topic Imma throw my hat in the ring with Silver Spoon by Hiromu Arakawa. It's a coming of age story (drawing from Arakawa's real life experience of growing up on a farm) about a boy from a suburban city attending an agriculture school despite not knowing a damn thing about farm life. One of the funniest slice of life series I've read.

Trick question they all are. Well, actually. Rescue Team's ending is a bit weird to me.

The Hero wanting to go back to the PMD world kinda takes me out of the self-insert mindset considering most of the townspeople tried to kill him and I'd be noping the fuck outta the PMD world at that point, but you do you Rescue Team Hero. >_>

Never meant to imply it's bad or anything. Just feels really...basic? and definitely a bit repetitive at times. Especially in the DS games and Gates, where you kinda just brute force everything. Which is kinda why Super was my favorite game to actually play, because it taught you early on to rely on items more often than brute strength, which made it that much more cathartic whenever you did get to play around with OP characters. Really hammered home the point that you're just a couple of dumb kids who are in a little over their heads and have to rely on their wits and stronger companions to squeak by. ...At least until those anime af transformation sequences where you're suddenly evolved and overpowered, but I prefer to forget those segments. >_>

Really though, I'd just be happy if the next game (if it ever gets made) focuses on an ensemble cast like Gates did.

Gates to Infinity has some of my favorite character writing though.

I feel I'm a black sheep for loving Gates tbh. I really loved the overall story.

Yeah, content-wise it's pretty underwhelming and all. Overall Sky is the better game. But still... I don't think the stories ever hit me as hard as Gates.

*fist bump*

Playing it again for the first time in a while and I kinda forgot how instantly likable some of the characters are. Dunsparce knows he's weak, but he's always trying to be stronger; Emolga's a bit of a hothead, but he genuinely cares about his friends, and he even has a bit of a mischievous side later with the frism prank; Virizion is this aloof loner who doesn't believe in friendship, but she's still a good enough person when it counts that it makes you want to know what her deal is; and Scraggy is surprisingly hilarious as this "reformed" bad guy who really doesn't want to be there and is only kept in line because he doesn't want to get his ass kicked by Quagsire again. And that's just scratching the surface, there basically isn't a single character in this game that I actively dislike, and it breaks my heart that it's still mostly considered "the bad game" because of gameplay quirks when that's never been PMD's strong suit to begin with.

Sky definitely has the best overall story in this franchise. Gates to Infinity has some of my favorite character writing though. Gurdurr not being able to work due to a crippling back injury and giving up on an honest life because someone tore down a house he built purely out of spite is just too fucking real for this series, man.

I don't really hate it per se, but the season 2 antagonist just wasn't as charismatic and memorable to me, and a popular character fucks off at the end of season 1 and it just doesn't feel the same without them. If you need good slice of life stuff then my top 3 recommendations are:

Silver Spoon

It's centered around a boy from a city deciding to enroll in an agricultural high school to get away from his highly critical father and because he thinks it'll be easy; most of the humor comes from Hachiken embarrassing himself because he doesn't know shit about agriculture. Draws on Hiromu Arakawa's (author of Fullmetal Alchemist) real life experience of growing up on a dairy farm.

Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto

It's about an impossibly cool guy named Sakamoto, and how the people around him grow to be better people due to his influence. Gets surprisingly real at the end. I recommend watching the anime instead though, I just feel it's better experienced in motion.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Ridiculously OP protagonist with reality warping psychic powers tries to live a normal life and stay under the radar. Nobody ever just leaves him alone though, and he frequently has to use his psychic powers to resolve some wacky dilemma. Like with Sakamoto, I recommend watching the anime instead, but this time because the music enhances the experience. I'm basically guaranteed to get a good chuckle whenever Shun Kaidou's theme starts playing.
