is this a catgirl harem thing?

No. Reclusive novelist adopts a stray cat, even though he has no earthly idea how to care for another living creature, let alone himself. Learning how to take care of a cat forces him to leave his comfort zone and actually deal with people despite his social anxiety.

And I only know about it in the first place because of TV Tropes, which I can't tell if that says more about my failure to keep up with new shows than anything else. It was such a goddamn feel-good show that I had to watch it all in a day. Didn't even notice it was a shojo series while I was watching. That's another mark of a good show, is when the intended demographic is entirely irrelevant to your own enjoyment of something.

This is a low-key "recommend me slice of life anime" topic.

I haven't played 4-5

You need to fix this immediately. Try not to spoil 4 for yourself if you haven't already, that game has a really good "oh shit" in the halfway point.

If they got the Shadows Of Valentia treatment and got a remake with some new features to make the game a bit easier, then sure. But if the original games are anywhere near as ass-destroyingly difficult as I've heard people say they are, I don't think I could beat them at all even if I wanted to.

Genealogy is one of the easier games in the series. Definitely easier than Radiant Dawn Part 1, maybe even easier than Path of Radiance due to mounted units being at their strongest in this game. First few numbered chapters might have some tricky parts, but it's totally smooth sailing after dealing with the Cross Knights in Chapter 3, especially if you have optimal pairings for the Gen 2 units.

As for Thracia, I haven't actually played that one myself yet. From what I've heard though it's mostly difficult because of map design. All stats cap at 20 in this game so stat inflation isn't really a thing. Of course, this one's a midquel to FE4 so you definitely need to play that one first. So I guess the TLDR is, uh, at least play Genealogy. Whoever said that game is hard is probably on something and should not be trusted.

This. Some are trash, like Fates. Well, imo.

On some level I kinda blame New Mystery of the Emblem for how Fates turned out, specifically with regards to how basically every character idolizes the Avatar. Couldn't even get to New Mystery's title screen without it kissing Kris's ass. If I was an FE3 fan I probably would've been infuriated tbh.

He likes Earthbound and the Super Paper Mario series.

Has he mentioned the old FFs or DQs?

He's mentioned that he likes the fact FF6 and FF9 had a good simple focus on a villain while all the others didn't and had bonkers storylines that make no sense.

But I think he hates all of them in terms of gameplay.

I'm not doubting you at all, I just don't keep up with him enough that this is the first I'm hearing of this. Was this in one of his videos or in one of his written articles?

Save as much BEXP as you can for Marcia so you can turn her into a flying goddess of death like all the cool players do. Maybe set some aside for Mist as well because she has an awesome promotion.

You're gonna wanna turn those animations off eventually though lol. They take entirely too long and they don't even tell you anything useful (hit/damage/crit) like in most other games. It's to the point where I legitimately cannot stand playing PoR with animations turned on.

Also, use Titania. She'll help you clear early game maps really fast, which leads to more BEXP to play around with later. She's even just weak enough to leave some beefy enemies alive for your scrubs to pick off, and she'll still be really good even late in the game, while not quite being the overpowering force of nature that Seth was.

Don't be afraid to crutch on Shinon and Gatrie either. The early game is designed around making good use of your early game crutches for quick clears, which will pay off in the form of more BEXP level ups later. Shinon and Gatrie in particular will never be as good when re-recruited as they are in the early game, so it would be wasteful to not make use of them while they're at their best.

This is pretty far off, but how's the fan translation of New Mystery of the Emblem? I was impressed with FE6's fan translation.

The translation is fine. It's about what you'd expect in quality from an official translation for the most part. Although one thing that really grinds my gears about this game in general is that it's the first game to include a Mary Sue Avatar unit and because it's a remake it's just painfully obvious that said unit (and the entire assassin subplot as a whole really) was just haphazardly crammed into a pre-existing plot that from what I've read didn't really need much updating. Like, you can't even get to the title screen before the game goes all in on sucking Kris's dick, it's infuriating tbh. You might want to consider playing or watching a playthrough of Mystery of the Emblem Book 2 if only so you can see that game's plot as it was originally intended.

Very funny and well written as always. Only issue I had is one you already mentioned, that being there were too many "correct" choices, but on the other hand it was also nice to just have a nice and focused story to kill time with, so that's probably a necessary evil considering some of the great CYOAs I've seen purge. I would also like to be tagged for the next one.

For what it's worth, Tate wouldn't have been that much better assuming this is normal mode, her bases are actually garbage for a level 8 unit with her join time.

Seeing as you're still relatively new to Fire Emblem I might actually have an excuse to shill Mekkah's Fire Emblem Pitfalls series:

Try not to miss any gaiden chapters or break any of the legendary weapons before the end of the Zephiel chapter if you want the true ending.

And if you think this game is exhausting then I can't wait until you play FE4. Might only be 12 chapters in that game, but they're all long enough that you'll need to take some breaks mid-chapter to avoid burning yourself out.
