The reaction to the ending is overblown. The final encounter with Flagg is handled poorly for sure, but that doesn't magically ruin the whole book. A story's value isn't solely in its ending.

Everything after reaching Boulder is poorer than the stuff leading up to it, but no, the reaction to the ending is not overblown. It's the worst ending in his pool of often very lackluster ones, and it's made even funnier because you can honestly follow the whole thought process leading up to it. He slowly brings all the pieces remaining in the story one by one together, puts them in an intriguing situation with the heroes at their absolute lowest, leaves you guessing where he could possibly go to give this confrontation a satisfying conclusion before revealing... He has no idea either, and just makes everyone blow up.

It's the literary version of the "rocks fall, everyone dies" D&D meme. The only ending he's written that comes close in how bad it is to The Stand is the ending to Needful Things, and even that is a fair few degrees off.

There was no emotional buildup throughout the book for Jack, he's obnoxious and flip flops between being an utter asshole and a generic protagonist man over and over again for seemingly no reason and the only reason people relate any more deeply with him in the book is because you follow events from his POV more often and because he gets that wretched saccharine monologue to Danny at the end.

It's a completely overrated aspect of the book and a hamfisted metaphor for King's own alcoholic moodswings, but comes off as more pathetic and apologetic for himself than making any sort of statement because he was still deep in addition with no end in sight for more than a decade. Kubrick rightly recognized that the setting, its history, and the actual supernatural elements Jack Torrance nonwithstanding were by far the most interesting parts of the book. This is the reason his movie is remembered so fondly and the miniseries is largely forgotten (besides the lighting and camera work making it look like an episode of Goosebumps and literally every actor in it besides Rebecca De Mornay utterly phoning it in or just being outright bad)

everything about the movie's ending was more haunting. Halloran fighting hedge monsters, a werewolf trying to give danny a blowjob, and jack getting that masturbatory "i might drink but i still love u son" then turning into a literal dancing cartoon monster man screaming about the boiler and then dying in what was written like the villain death of an 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie was a disservice to everything that happened before it.

For being the person that wrote the story, King has never done any favors for The Shining. The last quarter of the book is the progenitor of the idea that he sucks at endings, the mini series is terrible, Doctor Sleep is stupid horseshit that completely forgets the parts of what made the original book pretty good
