Yeah I don't think the story feels very anime for the vast majority of it, because it's so focused on the characters and real motivations and developments. Kinda like Avatar. They are still clearly anime by the end, but it's the kind of thing you can easily recommend to someone who has no interest in anime.

You know, at first I was kinda against Mumkhar biting it so soon after his reveal (even though it was obvious even without spoilers) because he was literally the driving force for this entire adventure. Upon reflection, I think it actually makes a lot of sense since everything has escalated and the stakes seem to be bigger. He represented a more naive and simple Shulk trying to fulfill a simple revenge quest, and now Shulk is beyond such concepts. Literally stopping Dunban from murdering him and even going so far as to try and save. It is a really good example of story growth.

This is why the story is so damn good. At every point it's totally driven forward by really strong motivations for everyone, but it also continues to evolve those motivations without obsoleting the previous ones.

So many JRPGs will try to escalate from "personal village" to "galactic war" and trample everything in the process, but this one always brings it back to the characters and the growth.

You really really don't need healing in this game. DPS and tanking (dodge and/or damage mitigatio) is the main thing, plus spot healing via Shulk and some other abilities is enough. You kill enemies faster than they can kill you.

Also Melia is great for having that small bit of passive healing that keeps your comfortable, but the problem is her AI sucks so you need to control her. That means you can't control Shulk, who has the highest DPS. He's okay on AI though I guess.
