Mr. Driller - Heading Back To Town

The beginning was a interesting, and then there was a really jarring transition that didn't feel earned. The piece itself is pretty solid, although there are some spots with piano where it gets too atonal to really be enjoyable. The string melody is excellent though. And how often does a trombone get even a hint of melody? Overall, pretty excellent. Just a couple minor gripes.

But for some reason, I'm not left with a particularly striking emotion after all is said and done. In theory, great. In execution, it's missing just... something.

It's got a bit of a soundscape quality to it, but something about it is just... unremarkable. It has a lot of little individual pieces that are interesting but not memorable. The instrumentation choices are good, but it's pretty significantly atonal, so in a vacuum, it doesn't really stand on its own two feet.

Xenoblade Chronicles X - NightL (Noctilum Day)

I love the Xenoblade X soundtrack quite a lot, although I know that I am definitely one of very few people that seem to share that sentiment these days. Late in this piece, there's a great little penny whistle part that I really enjoy. It's sort of hard to quantify what makes this piece enjoyable, but it is.

This is actually a point I was often trying to make back in 2008. People consistently suggested that Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II, Hancock and The Dark Knight all coming out in the same year to fairly strong commercial success demonstrated the peak of the genre. I think you made the right point though - the genre will thrive as long as there is quality storytelling.

What is really important to note is something that Timothy Leary once said: superheroes are the extension of pulp heroes. Pulp heroes are the extension of Victorian heroes of writers like Verne. Victorian heroes are an extension of our medieval legends. Medieval legends stem from ancient mythology. We yearn for a primal archetype of hero to represent the zenith of human fortitude as they handle the sort of problems that occupy our minds or fill our nightmares with fear. It's a natural part of storytelling. For our generation, it manifests in the form of superheroes. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are just the Hercules, Perseus and Atalanta of our time.

John Constantine CAN be extremely powerful. He has folded space and time around himself for the simplest of things, such as skipping customs and ticketing so as to not pay for a plane ticket. The essence of the character is that he is, in fact, a very powerful magician who just chooses most of the time to slack off and really not use his abilities. He also, and this is a very key point, is immortal. He is going to be consigned to hell at the time of his death, but due to contractual fraud he perpetrated against the lords of Hell, his soul is wrapped up in a legal dispute that would functionally cause reality to end should he die. So Hell has to keep him alive in order to prevent a war that would end all of existence.

He also has a lot of the traditional magical spells and wards placed around him that can protect him in a normal DCU-style superhero title. Invisibility, telekinesis, etc. He's got a ton of those spells. But the biggest part of this situation is his immortality and his ability to manipulate reality around him if necessary.

At this point, I think it's important to mention that Spider-Man showed that the fatigue from the fallout of the long-gestating Avengers run isn't that much. It still outgrossed Homecoming and pulled $1.1 billion. I see a lot of people consistently saying that we will eventually have some sort of superhero fatigue, but at this point I've yet to see any actual evidence that it will happen.

I think Jack Hawksmoor sits right on the edge of Medium to High. Really depends on the situation; if you pull him onto Coruscant, for example, he probably could wipe out an entire galaxy.

Holy shit these lyrics are terrible. There were aspects of the instrumentation I liked outside of the really bad Gavin DeGraw song. Hell it reminded me of some Diablo II action until I got John Stamos lead guitar bullshit.
