Yeah Cold Steel II has issues imo. Definitely my least favoriteTrails game, though I'd still give it a solid 8/10 or so.

The good parts are really good though.

Someone explain the appeal of this series to me, because the OP might be the most content I've seen regarding this show.

It's got really good character writing and creates a compelling romance without making it HIGH DRAMA. I don't necessarily mind high drama (I've saved Clannad and Toradora throughout the contest), but this seems like the main reason to recommend it to non-yuri fans.

It's a show about characters with relatable problems and how their relationships with each other allow them to deal with those problems.

I also think it's pretty good from a cinematography/directing standpoint, though it's not exactly the type of show where that is a huge deal.

The implied meaning of "keep the guys away from [X]" is "there are bad people who will attempt to take advantage of [X]'s naivety, and you should try to protect [X] from those people". I think it's a very weak case to try and paint that as actively suggesting to prevent the girl in question from making her own decisions.

There's reinforcement of unequal gender roles which are implicit in the way the statement is constructed, so if that's your point then fine, but the most direct meaning here is closer to what FD said.

Yeah Trails is more a story/character/worldbuilding focused series. The gameplay--while I do think it's good--is definitely secondary to the experience.

For Cold Steel 1 and Cold Steel 2, not much. I'm told context from the Sky series is more important for Cold Steel 3 and 4, though I haven't played those myself.

Cold Steel 1 and 2 do spoil the Sky games though. Whether or not that matters to you I don't know.

Cold Steel has more quality-of-life features and also has slice-of-life/dating sim elements that aren't in TitS, but unless either of those really speak to you I don't see any reason to recommend Cold Steel. I honestly consider Trails in the Sky to be the better game pretty much in every aspect.
