Still though, while I try not to be "that guy" who shakes his cane at everything Zoomers like, the sheer amount of influence YouTube culture has on that gen concerns me a little.

I see where you're coming from. I can't (and don't care to) verify this, but apparently the girl in this exchange is 15:

She's so eager to give so much of herself to this guy. It's sad reading that.

This is heartbreaking, geez.

Sadly this is no different than celebrities of the past either. Technology has made it easier for stuff like this to happen, but people with power and fame have been exploiting their fans since the beginning of celebrities.

I am curious, for the Hurricanes prediction pickers (other than Emeraldegg who I know is a dyed-in-the-wool fan) whether it's driven by hate of Boston or legit thinking the Canes can do it...

I was legit wondering the same thing!

I hate the Bruins as much as the next normal, rational person, but they are far and away the best team left.

let's be real - both dorne and the iron islands sucked in the books. they have one interesting POV between the two of them (asha) and one interesting non-POV character (euron). they can be occasionally enjoyable to read, but they're almost 100% setup with the exception of the kingsmoot and doran's plan reveal. .

BOO BOOOOOOOO

Even without those, both of those chapters were 100x more interesting than most of the normal POV characters. Bran/Tyrion were crazy boring and suffered a ton because GRRM didn't just do the time skip like he planned. The only truly boring Dorne stuff to me was Quentyn, who wasn't even really in Dorne.

Sansa BECOMING a schemer has made her likable too! She was fairly uninteresting prior to the culmination of that arc.

Seriously! Probably my favorite line of her in the entire show was that "I'm a slow learner, it's true. But I learn."

Because it was like her acknowledging she was terrible at the beginning but that she wasn't that person anymore, which is all true

Nelson_Mandela posted...
Sophie Turner is such a bad actress

booooooooooo

Yeah, early seasons Turner was bad but I thought she was great since season 6 or so. As the quality of writing has gone down, the acting has gotten a ton better. I thought Emilia Clarke was excellent this season, even with the script being what it was at times.

And I totally agree that Sansa has been one of the best characters since season 6. The fact she can scheme and plan and isn't just a helpless kid now makes her 100x more interesting.

A fan theory I saw, which won't be true because D&D wouldn't do it is that (spoiler just in case but I promise I legit have seen no spoilers so I wouldn't know if this is true or not) Sansa was the one who told Cersei that Daenerys was returning to Dragonstone. None of the northmen were there, and she wants Jon to be king. Let Cersei/Dany weaken each other while the northmen are marching down. Sansa basically controls the Vale already (and would get the support of the Riverlands if Edmure shows up or gets freed at some point) and if Dany dies Jon would have the north instead of throwing it behind a queen Sansa clearly doesn't like and doesn't want to support. It would at least explain why Euron was able to get yet another surprise attack.

Again, I doubt it is true and it would probably raise more issues than it solves, but I would very much like a MASTER SCHEMER Sansa since all the other fun scheming characters are either dead or nerfed besides Cersei.

Dorne in the books is the best part of AFfC. I love that storyline and hate how butchered it was in the show.

I think it is interesting but to this point none of the story has hit any sort of a payoff point.

I think it is likely that in the books (guesses for book 6 upcoming) Dorne joins Aegon after they find out Quentyn is dead. I think it is likely Cersei dies much sooner in the books. In the show, it makes no sense that Dany has a HUGE advantage of all her armies + Dorne + Highgarden and they have to go through profoundly weird stuff to make Dany weaker (magic Euron ambushes to apparently kill all of Dorne, the weird voyage beyond the wall so Dany can lose a dragon, etc). In the books I think Dany doesn't get all the support she does and also Euron isn't just a weird pirate fuck boy and actually steals one of her dragons.

I agree there is no payoff yet, but I can at least imagine Dorne playing a role in the final two books. And also the "FIRE AND BLOOD" speech was pretty much the best part of book 4 already and I am at least interested in reading the Dornish characters.

Inviso posted...

The GREYJOYS in the books are terrible.

Greyjoys are even better in the books than the Dorne cast though and Euron is a legitimately interesting and weirdly creepy character.

The ending of the season has leaked. The three fairly large GoT subreddits all hate it and are mad. I think part of the mass downvoting is because of that.

I don't think there's any possible way this could have ended well. There's no completely satisfying ending. Especially with Thrones, where so many want, say, Dany on the throne and it's become so tribal that anything short of her winning and being queen would be "bad writing", rather than just a result they disagree with. And vice-versa, too - some hate her so much that her winning would also be "bad writing".

Yep! I don't even know the ending either - I've just seen angry posts on all three subs about how this ruins GRRM's vision and its like a fanfic and blah blah blah on and on like that without specifics about the actual ending.

However, like you said, I can guarantee that no matter what the ending was, people would say that. At this point there are three likely endings I can see based on how the last episode set up. And with any of them, I would imagine exactly this response. For two of them (Jon wins alone and rules/walks away or Dany wins alone and rules justly/unjustly) you would have about half of the fandom mad because they were pulling from the other character and this scene from season 4 episode 6 shows that this character was supposed to win and D&D don't know what they're doing. For the other (Jon and Dany rule together although this is less likely based on what just happened in episode 4) you would have probably the same amount of people mad because the show was getting a "happy ending" and it is out of line with the tone of the show up to this point.

And of course, option 4 is none of the above. It which case you would have a "but GRRM set it up this way and you're just being different to be shocking this is bad" reaction from the fanbase too. Imagine the Arya killing the Night King reaction but magnified 100 fold because it is the final ending with nothing after it to look forward to.

There is no good ending for them at this point. Either a character that people love and has been built up for eight seasons is about to get an unhappy end, characters will get a happy end and people will complain it is not in line with the show, or WILDCARD BITCHES and people will likely complain anyway.

Like I said I don't know any specifics and don't care to. But "people will be mad" was the outcome I was assuming since the season began tbqh.

The biggest problem is ASOIAF fans that have this mythical perception of GRRM and think GoT is killing everything they loved about the series.

Say what you will about the series - it is at least getting finished. HBO ran into exactly the same problem GRRM did when trying to get to a cohesive finale. HBO is at least finishing the thing. I doubt ASOIAF ever gets a legitimate ending because GRRM doesn't seem to have any idea how to resolve things himself.

I mean, his latest blog post is (among other things) him bragging about how long his latest prequel book has been on the NYT bestseller list. FIRE AND BLOOD, the first of a two volume set detailing, the complete history of House Targaryen. In case you were wondering, yes there is a reason hes spent more time writing prequels than working on the main series.

Is it...he has written himself into a corner and would much rather just play around in the big beautiful world he established rather than try to figure out a way to get to a logical and satisfying conclusion?

He's also said he's going to be involved with the three HBO prequel series. So we simply aren't going to get book 7. Ever. We might get some weird version of book 6 at some point. He clearly has chapters for that written at least. But the conclusion to the show is going to be the conclusion we're stuck with because GRRM doesn't know what to do, sadly.

He should write what makes him happy so I'm not begrudging him that. And he owes no one anything. I'm more annoyed with people who think HBO is ruining GRRM's vision when it should be clear he didn't have a vision and that is the bulk of the problem.

I'm kind of bummed about how show Tyrion has proceeded because all he does these days is get mercilessly and repeatedly dunked on by Cersei. He hasn't had a single good idea for what seems like half the show and has been on this downward spiral he can't get out of.

BUT book Tyrion was almost unreadable after he leaves KL so you are absolutely right about that imo. I didn't necessarily *hate* his character but those chapters were the worst for me to read through. Also Dinklage is still charismatic enough that even though I think he's a bit of a dolt now, I still like his character plenty.

I keep going back to think about that scene where everyone who survived the battle is drinking and having fun, and Dany is just sort of surveying the room. I think it has to be one of the most melancholy scenes in the entire show. There is just something so subtly sad about it. I know Dany is trending mad queen, which I think will be great and a lot of fun, but there is something really sad about the character that this scene really highlights for me.

All Dany ever talked about in the earlier seasons was going home and having a home and returning where she came from. And I feel like this scene is her realizing there is no home for her. She sees Jon with the wildlings and the northmen, and Tyrion and Jaime talking with Brienne and everyone is smiling and laughing, and she's just there by herself.

She is truly alone. Drogo is dead. Barristan is dead. Her blood riders are dead. Jorah is dead. Missandei is now dead. Two of her three dragons are now dead. Tyrion and Varys spent the episode conspiring against her. And her dynamic with Jon is essentially completely destroyed in a way that doesn't seem fixable.

I know part of this is just in retrospect with the episode as a whole, but that is just such a lonely scene to me.

For anyone who hasn't been following, just to summarize what has happened in the first round of the playoffs this year:

The #1 and #2 overall teams in the league won a combined 1 game against the two 8 seeds, with the #1 overall seed (Tampa) getting swept despite having one of the best regular seasons of all time.

All 4 division winners lost to Wild Card teams.

The underdogs won 6/8 of the matchups, give or take 1 depending on who you viewed as the underdog.

Anything else?

Both the defending champs and the defending runner-up lost in the first round in crazy game 7s.
