Practically no consequences for death in modern MMORPGs is boring EverQuest was certainly way too harsh, dropping everything and eventually decaying if you didn't get back to your death point in time... But something like The Realm, where you only drop a thing or two, probably something even trivial like a piece of cheese and you can kill whatever (if anything) picks it up to get it back, just adds some excitement to risky battles and makes rare items feel even more precious. |

Getting to the level cap in just a few days, following the exact same trail of fetch quests everyone else did, just to sit in dungeon queues all day. It was the only way to get the casual audience interested in the genre but still isn't enough to keep them playing. |
