why would they when the movie is set in CHINA there where no black people in ancient china

they cast a chinese woman to play a iconic chinese character from a chinese fable who may or may not have been a real person (im in the camp she is not a real person but the fable is based on a real person or persons)

If she was played by a black actress, the people defending the casting would argue that it's her gender, not her skin color that is integral to the story.

but i can still make the song work for this more faithful adaption

have HER be the one singing her CO sees her skills and tallent and asks her to whip the others into shape

hell if this adaption has mulan rise tot he rank of general over her 12 year career (which i fully expect this adaption to do) the song also forshadows her being destined to lead

most iconic song stays in the film but has a new meaning to it

I've never heard that version before. It was always the twist ending that her fellow soldiers came to pay their respects after the war and were surprised to find she was a woman.

thats the most common version yes

the ones where people know tend to be the ones where she has a love interest which is seemingly the version this film is going with

i am by no means a expert on this story ive just heard alot of stuff on it over the years

just a PSA for some people mulan is NOT an orriginal disney story its based on a very very old chinnese folk tale

the huns where not who she fought in it

and in it she was allready a badass before she trained int he army and she became a high ranking general after service for 12 years

also in SOME (not all) versions the people under her command did know of her gender

i dont think this one should be viewed as a live action remake at all rather it should be viewed as disney just doing another take on the story this time more faithfull to the original tale

hell apprently sony has there own mulan film coming out next year

Thats correct, yes. Disneys Ariel the Little Mermaid should always look the same for brand recognition. Its too ingrained in pop culture to be any different.

But say Pixar or whoever did their own Little Mermaid adaptation, then I wouldnt want or expect them to make her look the same as Disneys version.

pixar is OWNED by disney so they are disney

Disneys Alice in Wonderland should always resemble Disneys Alice in Wonderland. Someone else who isnt Disney is free to adapt the original book a different way.

Honestly white washing roles are terrible, I refuse to watch many of those movies. Just feel the same even when its reversed.

Everyone deserves representation in all media but it can be done without changing characters that have existed for decades

one little problem with that media saturated things with so many white strait males for decades its very hard for NEW characters to even get created

when they are they get accused of just pandering

and for decades racist caricatures where used in the media which spread globally japan did not know black face was racist untill very recently do to the cultural impact old cartoons had as just one example
