It only does that if the developers put that in for you.

I can't play Outer Wilds or Void Bastards in 4k/60fps because they didn't enhance it. That's the downside.

It's a tradeoff alright, but not one that I regret buying the system for.

Also older games receive a frame rate boost. All the Battlefield games now can pretty much do 64 players at 60 FPS with no hiccups, that's a good tradeoff.

Sure. But then the downside is you're playing 720p on a system that could do more. Unfortunately that's the big downside of these mid-gen consoles.

I think it's complicated to measure if PC or console gaming is cheaper. It depends on the person and what they're looking for really. If a guy just wants COD and Madden every year a console will probably be cheaper for them. Buying an Xbox One with Game Pass is a good bargain too.

I think PC gaming has far more opportunities to be thrifty though. If you have enough self control you could easily live off the giveaways and games that are dirt cheap without any subscriptions. If you have some leftover accessories and parts from before you can cut corners too.

There's a lot of factors.

EDIT: Oh look. The little guy went on a rant and argued against things I never said. Poor fella must have been upset over an old topic or something.

I live in Australia which is one expensive ass country and even we're having some great deals on prebuilt PC's right now.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/461319

$599-$1,200 depending on what you're looking for and that's AUD. I'm sure building your own and being in the US would make it even cheaper.

I'm sure there's plenty of people selling their 1060/1070/1080 cards right now too. I think a 1070 will likely play next gen games fine.

It's a weird time to look at PC's at the moment.

How does that look factored into a complete build though? PC parts picker "entry gaming builds" rarely drop below $450.

I'm not sure what the current builds are but you could always compare them to the Steam hardware survey if you wanted to. Those numbers are what people are actually using on Steam right now. Most stuff is mid range.

Personally I think now is the time to at least get a mid-range PC so you're covered for next gen. There's gonna be a bump when that hits. If you go for at least that I'd say you'd be set. Or wait a few years to get a cheapo one.

It could but I dont think that is what most PC gamers do. PC enthusiasts want the next GPu, more RAM, and then inevitably a new MOBO and CPU to go with...hell better get a new tower because the old one looks pretty dull. And theres a new resolution factor for monitors now. Theres always another thing.

I say this as a PC gamer btw. It is like literally every hobby I've ever got into. Brewing beer, cycling, running, making bread, reading books. Every single one of these had people telling you about all the money you save while you're throwing hundreds of dollars into a bottomless pit of enthusiasm.

I was convinced it would save me money and really it's just an excuse to spend more money.

It's a hobby.

Sorry mate but you're basing this on certain niches in the community instead of what people actually do. These niches exist everywhere but they don't speak for the average user.

Last month the most popular graphics card was the 1060. The lower mid-range card from around 2016-2017. 62% still game on a 1080p resolution.

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

The best graphics card takes up around 1% of the Steam userbase.

I think the biggest reason this excuse doesn't really work is that it doesn't stop a game from flopping. Look at Anthem. Microtransactions won't save that game.

At most it should be used to keep supporting games like Rainbow Six Siege and Overwatch years after release. It makes sense then. But for stuff like Shadow of War they're just trying to make more money.

I actually don't have an issue with GTAV either. GTA Online has all of the microtransaction stuff and still gets content but the single player game remains its own thing that's overall traditional.

Some more Xbox rumors from a Microsoft Insider
On the hardware side, I expect Microsoft to start to peel back the layers on the secrecy around their next generation consoles, Anaconda and Lockhart. For those who are hoping to see a list of raw specs, I dont think thats on the agenda quite yet. Instead, look for the company to provide performance multipliers for the hardware; I have heard that Lockhart and Anaconda are targeting at least a 4x performance gain for the high-end (Anaconda) and 2x for the lower end hardware(Lockhart).

Further, the company will likely highlight features of the new platform such as using solid-state drives, Navi graphics, Zen 2, backwards compatibility and other components of the AMD platform. Also, expect to hear about how these new consoles can take existing Xbox One X games and enhance the graphics and gameplay experience. By holding the explicit specs back, this allows the company to talk about the underlying features of the console without playing all their cards for the upcoming devices

Of that, I expect titles like Gears of War 5 (codenamed Halifax) will have a strong presence, and we will also see items like new DLC for State of Decay 2, Forza Horizon 4 Expansion 2, Halo Infinite trailer and gameplay, Age of Empires info, Fable details may be tossed in as well; it looks like there will be at least 3 new IPs that we havent seen previously.

For Halo Infinite, this will be the first real showing of the next generation game. Microsoft will be running the demos from a PC with an Xbox controller as they dont want the first impression of the new game to be running on the now dated Xbox One hardware.

In addition to Microsoft having a solid first-party presence, sources at the company are saying that this is among the strongest showings from third-party companies in its E3 history.

But the darling of the event will be the companys xCloud service. Microsoft has been talking about this service for about a year and at E3, we will get a new look at the offering. While I dont think Microsoft will share the raw performance figures of xCloud, I have heard that it does best Googles previously announced 10.7 teraflops.

Expect to see new demos of the service and I know at one point, they were looking to have a demo from a location outside the venue. Meaning, a demo that shows someone using xCloud at home but I have not heard if this scenario made the final cut.

As Microsoft announced last week, GamePass for the PC will be talked about in much greater detail. I noted last week that the company was working on a new PC application for the service code-named Garrison and WalkingCat has found evidence of its existence. Supporting my post, Microsoft is also rebranding today the Xbox PC app to Xbox Console Companion, clearing the way for the new app to arrive in the very near future.

In addition, I still believe that Game Pass for the PC will be included in Game Pass Ultimate and evidence supporting my original post has surfaced as well.

Sure but this isn't a case of that. They have the option to use the Xbox One X to raise the resolution, general IQ or framerate but they're not always taking advantage of that.

It's more similar to those PC ports that are locked to console settings.

Of course the Xbox One X version doesn't get pushed to its limit because the game needs to take the base console into account but that's not what I'm talking about.

It would be neat if Microsoft let users to increase the resolution in a menu somewhere if the developers haven't done anything but I guess that's not what consoles are.

Outer Wilds and Void Bastards are both major games releasing on Game Pass recently and neither of them are enhanced. So you're basically playing games designed for the base console anyway.

The accusations of inappropriate behaviour from several people and the inappropriate photos with young girls (regardless of consent) should be more than enough for any company to fire him and to ban him from conventions. Which looks like the right decision to me.

The rest of this story is up to you to follow. I'm really not interested spending hours looking into a C-Grade voice actor getting defended by fans who are getting into wars on social media. Yves Guillemot said in an IGN Unlocked podcast that they struggle with making a new Splinter Cell because the fans are really demanding with what they want.

So basically I'm reading that as they want to make it into another Ubisoft style open world game but they're worried that will piss off the fans so they're umming and ahhing over it.

To be fair to them Blacklist did flop so I have no idea where else they could really go outside of just improving the formula they already have. But I dunno. I think Blacklist might have gotten overshadowed because the new consoles were coming up so I think they should at least give it another chance. Splinter Cell was successful when it was a tech showcase too so making it a next gen launch window game could be the booster shot it needs. There's also a lot of buzz over it in the last year or so. They've got to give it a proper chance.

Didn't some dude flat out say he was working on a Splinter Cell game on twitter before removing it?

Or are you just saying it's not going to be at this years E3?

Yeah they said they were joking.

But pretty much all insiders seem to be saying it's not coming so I dunno.

Maybe it could be like their 'Watch Dogs' moment and it's for next gen?

I'm picturing something akin to MGSV. You'll be building up your "legion" by recruiting NPCs, and taking control of some of them in some way.

Yeah that's what I'm picturing too. But they'll be given more personality.

I wonder how many different voices and personalities there are.
