I think it's more likely for the psp version of growlanser to get a patch, particularly since it has additional content.

though I think there's a script for the psx version out there, at least.

XI Jumbo (updated version of what was released here as Devil Dice)
IQ Final/Kurushi Final (updated version of Intelligent Qube)
something puyo puyo I guess
I'd like to play Magical Drop F too... too bad I missed buying it on psn

you could also play the japanese version of Silhouette Mirage I guess, since Working Designs ruined the game during localization to the point where many basically consider it to be borderline unplayable.

oh man, bosses regaining health when you lose a life in furi is just about the worst mechanic I can think of to pad the game length/make things artificially more difficult.

particularly since they have like two attack patterns per life bar and you have to go back the the first one if you mess up and get hit towards the end.

finished chapter 2 today, 96 deaths.

thought it was kind of easier than the first chapter outside of that one room near the end, although I admit I'm not really planning on playing for completion in terms of collectables or alternate versions of levels since the level of skill/input required probably going to be past me at this point. (I pretty much had to give up trying to beat adventure island without cheating/save states earlier in the year for example, and I never got around to finishing super meat boy)

Mr Crispy

Dark Lord and Dark Law: The Meaning of Death are both pretty short.

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 was like 5 hours long.

Riviera was pretty short, maybe a little over 10? if you fight a lot of practice battles.

Valkyrie Profile : CotP is in the 5-10 hour range for each playthrough (although I'd recommend playing through it 3 times to get all the endings because they actually build off each other unlike a lot of other games with multiple endings)

some of the SaGa games hit under it, although it depends on how much experience you have with the game. SaGa Frontier I'd say the first character you play would be about 15 hours, but after that probably each character playthrough would average out to somewhere in the 5-10 hour range. In Unlimited SaGa, my first playthrough with Laura was like 40 hours because I had trouble with the last boss and didn't know what I could do to fix it, but then my Judy playthrough was like 5-6 hours and Ventus playthrough was 10-12 hours (and my Kurt playthrough was 25 ish I think, because I was trying to see the alternate version of his final boss)

mystery dungeon games tend to have short main storylines (unless you're playing Shiren 3, which never ends ugh) because they're basically just tutorials for the postgame, but it depends on how skilled you are/knowledgeable about the mechanics and if you try to grind a bit to make things easier on yourself and if you are unlucky to hit any major setbacks. Torneko 2's main story took me somewhere in the 5-10 hour range to complete, and it took me about 12 to beat the first pokeymanz one after suffering a few lossses. though it's probably safer to say the shorter ones are more intended to be about 15 hours or so for average players but you could probably do it less if you're good at roguelikes.

though it's not that I'm necessarily recommending some of these just saying it exists.

I've actually been playing through the first two Torneko games recently.

like yeah the first game is kind of bare bones, but most of the core mechanics of the mystery dungeon series are there. the biggest, most glaring issue is that money is basically just used for scoring (and story progression) since there's no shops in town or in dungeons.

that means that at the start it's a bit easy to get rng screwed by not getting a good weapon/shield, and it's kind of hard to build up enough steam/momentum to clear the game by building up good items (or get enough money to expand the vault so you can take in more items early in the game) since you're only guaranteed an escape scroll if you reach floor 20.

(also I find it kind of hilarious in a mean spirited the game hates you way that it forces you to manually walk back out after you reach your goal, with no more items spawning so it's easy to starve to death if you aren't prepared enough or wasted too many turns or didn't get enough food)

Torneko 2's main story is probably the shortest/easiest in the entire mystery dungeon series. but still pretty solid. haven't tried to do any of the postgame dungeons or tried the class changes to see how they play.

Too bad Torneko 3 or the Yangus mystery dungeon games aren't translated, I'd like to play them sometime.

Gurumin beaten

it's an ok game I guess but not as good as the ys games due to some kind of questionable design choices. Like I don't like the rating system or the minigames and then there's the padding things out with the mirror levels. and also going a bit overboard with moves that require you to rotate the control stick (or I guess the cursor if you're using mouse/keyboard) which probably contributed to my analog nub on my first psp breaking ha ha.

you would have to be pretty nutty to be a completionist with Trails.

the quests have different point values depending on how you complete them and there isn't really any way to tell if you're doing it right and getting the best outcome without being tethered to a guide (though that's if you want the reward for max points too, you pretty much get the top ranking just by doing all the quests without worrying about points).

the psp version has a new translation, new voice acting, and new portraits which are displayed when characters talk. Though while the new translation say refers to the Wise Men by their actual angel names iirc instead of the "censored" ones in the psx versions, it tends to use wacky exotic spellings for more straightforward place names items etc. like other squenix localization efforts like Tactics Ogre.

gameplay wise I don't think there's much difference besides there now being a three hit base attack combo, and welch from star ocean 3 as a playable character. probably doesn't crash as often too.

as far as party members go it's like

Ashton vs. Opera (and Ernest)
Precis vs. Bowman
Leon (Claude side) vs. Dias (Rena side)

and you can only pick 8 out of 12 (13 with welch) characters.

dias is probably better due to mages sucking due to long spell animations and lack of hits, others it's kind whichever one you prefer really. no one really likes ernest besides opportunities to pickpocket battle suits but I hear that you have to keep him if you follow opera's side quest long enough to get him or they'll both leave together or something. IDK. Ashton gets a special attack from the postgame dungeon but it's kind of a novelty and not too useful, and with opera and precis you have to use engineering to get certain killer moves but they're super obnoxiously rare to even get so I'd suggest don't bother with trying to get those kms really

what you're thinking of is probably during the tournament, you side with the poor old blacksmith who wants you to show off his sword over the other weapons shops (there's a few events that kind of nudges you along that route unless you just pick the first shop you see). then go back after being eliminated by dias to get his sword, and keep it until the second half of the game where you can get the materials to modify it twice into one of the best weapons in the game (there's some in the postgame dungeon that are statistically better, but this one has kind of a splash damage effect that hits more times)

having previously finished the snes version last year, I bought the gba version of sgng. not a bad handheld conversion overall though the hit detection feels a bit weird and there isn't really quite enough screen space to fight some enemies like the ghosts where it gets a bit crowded or red arremers where they seem to stay just offscreen.

on stage 6 in arrange mode.

see in addition to the regular mode, there's a new mode where you can pick your route through the game if you have magic/gold armor at the end of a stage. So you can pick between the regular stage, a hard version of the same stage and a "new" stage. Also you don't have to play through a second time just to get the goddess bracelet.

the "new" stages are mostly based off of stages from other games and new bosses. arrange stage 2 is based on stage 2-1 of ghouls (so cutting out the neat looking part of the stage with the town on fire boooooo), with a red arremer boss. Stage 3 is based on stage 4 from goblins with the same dragon boss (with a new sprite), stage 4 is based on stage 1 from goblins and has the cyclops/"unicorn" boss at the end but with the wolves and bats from super instead of the crows and randomly spawning wind mages and some weird changes like randomly getting Angry Moon'd at the end of the first half and you have to cross big stretches of water in the second half using petrified wind mages that come to life when you step on them as platforms. kind of a waste to rehash a stage 1 so late in the game, instead of picking something a little more interesting visually like stage 4 in ghouls. Stage 5 seems to be original, a water cave although it seems a bit cheap in terms of deaths imo and the boss has a bit too irregular pattern for this series.

also, something I found amusing is that capcom managed to spell 'red arremer' three different ways in the same paragraph in the instructions (calling the boss version 'red armor' and then referring to the regular kind spelled with both an 'e' and an 'i')

But I dunno, I didn't finish all the levels first and didn't want to try to beat the game again since the analog nub on my first psp snapped off shortly afterwards. >_>

I dunno, I would assume that difficulty probably just affects random enemy spawn rates and the number of hits it takes to kill bosses.

Looking on the board, I guess also the number of money bags you need to pick up to get a continue.

I don't really think the game is actually unreasonable. Well, outside of trying to finish stage 7 loop 2 with the bracelet under the time limit. As already been mentioned in this topic that's just awful and probably the hardest thing to do in the series that I've seen (though I haven't beaten Ultimate or the Maximo games).

You just kind of have to get used to how it plays... the levels are designed to be played slower and more methodically. trying to rush through levels will just get you killed. I know I had a lot of trouble in 2-1 for instance because I was trying to skip bits of the level or hurry through before more ghosts spawned. you need to clear out random enemies before pressing forward and spawning fixed enemies or other level hazards, as well as learning where chests spawn so you can get the magic armor (and the bracelet on the second loop) on each attempt at a level.

Young Frankenstein

(Probably would have been a little tougher if I hadn't been listening to the musical soundtrack recently - best song in there is titled "Join the Family Business".)
