Trump moved it for one simple reason: Because it would be easy to do, and would play well to his base. He didn't consider any of the political ramifications for anything, because he never does. It's the same reason he wouldn't outright criticize the Charlottesville White Supremacists. The Republican platform essentially labels roughly half of American Citizens as their enemy.
