The problem is the only way out of more strict work requirements is to formally become designated as disabled by the federal government and resign to live in poverty off of SSI. SNAP does not recognize a diagnosis, only a federal designation as disabled. But what if you actually need to do this?

It's unfortunate because the current policy ignores the fact that there are people that may be depressed and suffer from severe anxiety (and are diagnosed) but don't possess the resources to wait up to 2 years to get approved for a disability claim when they really need it.

Something like 1/4th of disability claims are approved after a few months, meaning 3/4th of applicants are denied and a person suffering must wait for a court to give them a hearing to appeal a decision against them, this is where the inefficiency of the government begins to show given wait times. In reality people may wait up to 2 years or even more waiting for their hearing depending on their state.

These people in limbo aren't able to participate in SNAP in states where the work policy has been implemented. Additionally unless someone is there to act as a caregiver they often become homeless because of their lack of financial resources and resort to dangerous shelters, dumpster diving and church food banks for basic needs.

once the benefits are approved they do give backpay from the time the papers are stamped. think i had to wait 4 months before i was approved the first time. had to go to the doctors and everything.
