For my new Japan Trip i did the following

got the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card: 50,000 points sign up bonus
my girlfriend got the American Express Everyday Card 25000 points
then i just got 5k points from normal spending and earning.

Transferred them to All Nippon Airways for a total of 80,000 ANA points. used them to book 2 round trip flights for 80k points, and 500 dollars (a normal trip to japan will cost 1000+ round trip on cheaper airlines. ANA is selling the same flight for a whopping 2300 dollars round trip per person)

for the hotel: i got the Citi ThankYou Premier card for 50,000 points. I used its 1.25 cents per point redemption to book a week's worth of hotel in tokyo.

then, im using my SPG American Express card to book a 2 night stay at a luxury 5 star hotel in tokyo. every year, they get a free night certificate. the card costs 95 dollars a year, but the hotel room im booking costs 300 dollars per night. 200 in value right there.

I've thought of getting a Gold card. What are the actual benefits of using that? I've been using a Discover it card mostly.

right now its kinda meh. 100 airline credit. 2x at restaurants and grocery stores and gas stations. 1x on everything else. transfer to airline partners. thats about it. its okay, but not great. $195 a year annual fee.

BUT in about 3 days its supposed to get a revamp.

same annual fee but now with a 100 airline credit, and a new 120 food credit at select restaurants/grubhub, and a whopping 4x at restaurants and grocery stores!!!

and its gonna be metal!

Yes, and paying off accounts is not actually positive activity.

It would behoove you to keep that account open and paid on time for as long as possible. Most 800+ scores are going to have st least one account that is 25 years older or more.

Yeah of course. I use a budget and pay off all my cards at the end of the month.

The only mistake I can think of I've made was I paid a card off with the wrong Bank of America account. It was then over drawn and we had to pay over draft fees. But we called bank of America and they reversed the fees.

Other than that, I just reap the rewards!
