These preachers are fuckin dumb. They definitely don't do this thinking they'll convert people, they're real life trolls. I can't imagine being so committed to being a public asshole on a regular basis.

I remember being in undergrad, and random crazy preachers would show up on campus. Crazy signs, call women terms worse than harlots.

I was just trying to get to class and the dude accosted me for some reason. He asked me a question or two as I was walking by, and ignored him. He stepped in front of me, and just screamed and pointed "You're going to Hell!" I just told him I'll see you there.

I mean, the point is, there's no way this would convert anybody. It really just is trolling in real life, and a type that way predates the term and the internet.

***

As an aside, I don't think women that dress however they please deserve rape, nor do I think dudes like this deserve base ball bats.

Seems reasonable.

As someone who played basketball in HS and has wrestled I don't get how wrestling is below basketball though.

Looks like its due to the hand-eye catagory.

This list is pretty old, but I think it's pretty accurate on the whole. not that there's no room for debate of course.

We started school by 8:20 am.

Some kinds, that lives way up the hollows or the hills, had to ride the bus for like an hour and half. They consolidated the high schools in 93 in the county, due to old buildings and drooping enrollment. So, that made some kids have long bus rides. The high school and middle school were in the center of the county, on a closed campus, and outside of town.

We got out at 3:20 or so.

The start and end time never bothered me much. I was the last kid picked up on my bus route and the first off though. I hated waking up in the morning, I still do, so the difference between 7, 8, or 9 would have no impact on me.

But, if it's good for the children, I support it.

2000

I was 16 at the time.

It was fun. Internet was around but not a cesspool yet. You swapped ICQ and AIM info to chat with friends or chat up people in other countries. You made Angefire or Geocities or Tripod websites.

It was pre-9/11 and people were still ride the post Cold War high, even with the .com bubble bursting. Things seemed really hopeful. School shootings were new and we weren't desensitized to them yet, otherwise, things felt safe and optimistic. It was like, get a college degree, earn money and no worries ahead.

I would not want to be a teen now in today's wired hell-hole of internet fame chasing for "likes". The inescapable sharing online, even when you're away. Used to be, your reputation only followed you around your school, at worst. The next town over or school over, nobody knew you. Now, you can't even move away from the hate.

When I was in high school, 99-2003, we had a three tier system. Full, reduced, and free. Same for breakfast.

You never paid on the spot. It was tied to your student ID. They never turned people away without money, since, y'know, kids gotta eat to learn.

Full lunch was like 1.25ish per meal fyi.

My fraternity was filled with political leader types and scholars, and artists. Not athletes.

We had to play the Pikes, the football team fraternity first round of broomball for Greek Week. Broomball is like hockey minus full contact and skates, but played on ice.

I was the center and was half the other guy. I had two assists and we won 2 to 1. The Pikes main rival to win Greek Week ran out on the ice and hoisted me up.

We ended up costing the Pikes the over all win for the week by doing this.

95.10 percent white for my current county of residence

This is actually one of the more diverse places. The county I grew up in is 99.35 percent white, as of the current census.

My high school, which only had 450 kids in it (considered a mid-sized school in the state at the time), had zero African Americans, one Hispanic, and one Asian (father was a white guy).

Holy crap, for real? I can't picture that at all. My second high school I attended was like 82% white and I thought that was crazy but it was also an outlier for our city.

I grew up in the Rural Rustbelt 2 hours from Pittsburgh, in West Virginia.

Let's check the bordering counties to home county (not counting Ohio, I lived on a county on the Ohio River).

------

Here's the thing. There are plenty of racists back home, but I've tried to explain this to non-whites before about a lot of folks. They literally go YEARS without seeing non-whites. That's why a lot of the good folks will still ask where you're from or why they might seem distrustful. They know instantly you're not from around there and they know NOBODY in your family. So, a lot of the questions you're gonna get might seem insensitive, but they are coming from not a mean place. Some people are racist, but most are not.

Pop - 15,000 - 99.92 white
Pop - 7,500 - 98.30 white
Pop - 8,100 - 98.30 white
Pop - 9,900 - 98.68 white

My home county
Pop - 8,900 - 99.35 white (I graduated high school in 2003, we had over 10,000 people then. The county had 15,000 in 1920 - My part of the country has been losing lots of people for decades.)

That's... wild. I can't even imagine somewhere with a population that low.

Did it feel like a "everyone knows everyone" kinda place?

This is extremely cheesy but when I think of that kind of place I think of Hal Ketchum's "small town Saturday night" if you've ever heard it.

Like morbidly curious to check out a place like that sometime just to experience it but also without any reason to I can't think why I would (like actually make the trip if that makes sense).

Yes. My hometown has 900 people.

Family means a lot. In the sense everybody knows everybody. So, your family (surname) goes a long way in dictating what people think of you. Since everybody knows if your dad and uncle are good for nothings, a lot of people will presume you are too. My family first settled in the county in the 1700s (one of the first in the area). So, my family is considered fairly reputable even though we chose wrong in the Civil War (confederates in a hugely Union county). My family also owns small businesses, so as a kid, I had to think about my behavior because the way I acted might change opinions about the family and cause people to not our stuff.

So, what sucks is for people different or if you're a good person in a "bad" family.

The whole gay baker thing would be in play in my county. If they won't serve due to "religion" (not saying this has happened back home -- I never heard of it happening at least) there aren't other options. You might have to drive an hour away to get service.

There is ONE stop light in the county. Only one "fast food" restaurant, a Dairy Queen.

******

To be fair, it was super nice too. I knew everybody in my school basically. You know a lot of people in the community have your back, and (especially before the heroin invasion) it was pretty nice, extremely safe, and people just went about their lives in relative peace.

I think diversity, in terms of gender, sexuality, religion, race, and so on are a good thing. That way, life is challenging and you're always learning new things and finding out new things about yourself the and the world at large. I grew up, as stated, in a rural county with 10,000 people, one high school, and was almost entirely white. There's diversity within that, of course, no two people are exactly alike -- however, most of our major cultural touchstones were. Thankfully, my parents, especially my mother, encouraged me to experience lots of different perspectives.

Yes. It is fun, especially if you are open to meeting new people.

I have gone to several shows alone. I have not regretted it once.

As a 34 year old that likes indy music and living in Appalachia, with no kids and a wife, it is hard to find people to see weird acts a state away with. So I just started going to shows alone.

Best experience was driving to DC for a night to see Courtney Barnett and Chastity Belt. It was at Club 930, and I had a ton of fun. I got to chat a few with the bass player from Chastity Belt, which was rad.

I drove to Richmond last spring for a show at some little art gallery. It was sucha cool venue! I drank Irish Car bombs at the Gwar Bar on that trip to and was alnost too drunk to walk back to the hotel.

I saw Godspeed You Black Emperor at some old library in Pittsburgh! No regrets! I went to the mountains to hike last summer and met a chick that was at the same show at a bar!

Just be open to the experience. You already have things in common with the other people there. Have a brew or two to loosen up, if you need to.
