i'm not gonna pretend XC1 had some great story or anything, the plot twists and ridiculous shark jumping moments drag it down considerably

After Melee the trophies just became "let's slap a pre-made image onto a stand, pose it, and call it a day" and it wasn't exciting to collect them anymore. Sure, Spirits are literally just taking jpgs of existing character artwork, but at least you're doing something with them.

This is true, and in some cases, Melee's handcrafted Trophies were genrally of even higher quality than the later ones ported from existing games.

For example, the Marin Trophy in Melee vs. the Ilia Trophy in Brawl. Despite being made several years earlier, Marin just looks much better than the Ilia model does. Now, I admit that this is the foot fetish in me noting this detail, but Marin's feet have individual toes or at least grooves to make them look like it; Ilia's model has no such thing, as it's just a texture (in fact, this is true with Pit's feet in Brawl as well).

64 is actually really cool tho

it's jarring playing it compared to the later games in the series. shield is busted from brawl onwards but in 64 it's actually really awful, so neutral consists essentially of a lot of aerial footsies until someone gets the first hit and opening, and the combo game allows and rewards a lot of creativity. which sadly sakurai doesn't appear interested in delivering these days

sakurai's stance has been to simplify the core gameplay. "fun" is subjective. brawl is generally considered the least fun smash game and it's also the least balanced

his "features" for the competitive (or just people who like good gameplay) are compromises at best.

that video is cool (and certainly scripted in some segments), but the average casual player will never come close to reaching that level of awareness or game knowledge.

sakurai's definition of casual fun has shifted more towards items and stage hazards that are entirely overcentralizing, to the point where you're forced to pay more attention to the stage and certain items than actual players. and that's bad design in my book. items and hazards that are less about player agency and more "activate this so some cool broken shit happens". also the gigantic increase in particle and visual effects just makes it harder to see what's actually important

this is partly why i get so frustrated with sakurai, i can't even agree with his direction for the series on a casual level.

playing with items on at max spawn is AIDS for casual play too, especially in the more recent games where items have become so absurdly overpowered and overcentralizing

gonna have to turn off a lot of those garbage items, don't really remember having to do that in 64 and melee
